I have an Astra Mk III Estate P 1996 and I have failed to get the Interior Courtesy Light going. Fuse OK, There is positive battery on the bulb and obviously when earthing the other end of bulb, it lights.

None of the 4 door switches will light the lamp and nor will the Pull On, lighting switch.

Rather than strip the thing of its linings looking for the wiring loom runs, has anyone any ideas about this type of problem from previous experience ??

Check the fuses in the fuse box. On experimenting whilst fitting an alarm to a previous Vauxhall of mine, I tapped into the fuse box for one of the live circuits and vaguely remember there were 2 fuses relating to the interior lights. No idea why 2 fuses, and by pulling out one of them, the interior light still worked.

Anyone know of a online site showing exhause prices (fitted or unfitted)

Just been quoted £75 fitted for a Fiat Brava 1.4SX 1998 - one piece from the cat to the tailpipe - and wanted to get some comparison.

Just had a look, comes up with £59.70+vat for the part (FT513H) which is £70.14 with the vat - so £75.00 all in with fitting seems excellent.

thanks for the link

Morning all,
I was walking the dog last night and happened upon two young lads waxing their car in the drive. The car in question was a tatty old Escort...H reg I think in red. As I got nearer it became apparant that they were using T-Cut over the entire car. I was under the impression that this takes a layer of paint off and should only be used on scratches.

Am I wrong?

You're using too much product - easy to make this mistake, try smaller amount on the cloth/buffer & don't let it dry!!

& as I mentioned earlier, a panel at a time would be easier, before it dries. Then apply your finish wax again a section/panel as you go over the vehicle.

Check the 3M www - sure to be some detail there!

Yes I have one, only 500 made in imperial blue, originally for the German market. I had a 2.0 esp before but this car is better.
Fantastic handling and great on fuel. If you can see past the blue oval it's one of the best handling cars I have driven and I have driven a few!

just found out my bro-in-law works for jaguar.
nice, get 10% off.
not gona tell the sales men that tho.
wait just before we close the deal and haggled as much
as i can off, and got best price for my heap
of cows dung.

Check how the discount works - I used to work for Ford (who of course own Jag now) and there was a separate price list for employee and family purchases. The dealers hated it because they make nothing on the cars, so your p/x will be terrible.
This was a few yrs ago, so may have all changed now, but check it out before you have another upsetting incident.

Evening!

Been doing a bit of research into this, since being driven into has recently made me a little bit more well off. Thought it might be fitting (although the crash was in no way my fault, before you start) to spend a small amount of it in getting my advanced driving licence.

It looks like if I pay £65 to join the cardigan clad, bovril drinking Institute of Advanced Motorists, the fees are all inclusive for the under 25 membership and the test.

Questions though...

1. What is Sparkle?! I guess it's all about making progress, driving at the speed limit when the road is clear etc etc. My problem with this is that I'm a bit of a Sunday driver when it comes to country lanes, where the speed limit may *be* 60mph, but I'm damn well not going to drive at 60mph because country lanes scare me! Maybe that doesn't make any sense?

2. Observed Drives? I don't take criticism well at all, so just wondered what these were like and what actually qualifies someone to be an observer?

3. If I pay the £65 and pass, am I likely to get this amount back in the shape of an insurance discount for having the advanced licence, or is there actually very little point in having it in the eyes of the insurance?

4. How long does it all take, on average, and is it case of training to pass the test or training to be a better driver?

Thank you!

Well, I've read this thread for a while now and thought I'd add my twopenneth. I passed my IAM car test about 2 months ago. I found the preparation difficult, not least because of all the bad habits picked up over 25 years driving.

Why did I do it? I passed the IAM motor cycle test way back when punk was young and I honestly believe it saved my life. I cleaned up my act and survived as a biker into my 40s. It gave me standard to aspire to. I don't think I would have made 30 if I'd carried on as I was.

It doesn't really matter whether RoSPA is better or worse - what counts is that you're taking steps to improve you own driving, whatever your starting point. That's all that matters.

... and who knows, you might even enjoy the experience.

Hello,
I'm planning to switch from Rover 200vi to a family car. I know it's like comparing apples and oranges but I can't decide between Toyota Corolla 1.6 terra HB and Honda Jazz 1.4 LS. They share almost the same price tag in Turkey.

I also wonder which company is more reliable, Toyota or Honda?
Some advice please..

Agree entirely about the new shape Micra. Had one as a courtesy car and the brakes were awful. The lightest touch on the brake pedal brings you to an abrupt stop. I have never experienced anything quite like them. I suppose you could get used to it. Don't know if they have ABS but if not and used in an emergency on a slippery road they could be a problem.

I was just wondering, there are numerous stories of places around Britain where there are ghosts related to motoring. I've heard one story of a driver I think near Salsbury (could be wrong) who stops for a female hitchiker, after she says where she's going, a few minutes later, the driver looks, only to see that she's gone!

Anyone?

Mods, pray indulge me on this one.

We had a very interesting debate around Christmas time as to whether Shell Optimax was any good and whether it was worth the extra. I'm not trying to re-open that debate, although I would say that I recently gave it a try out of curiosity and found an immediate (and very pleasant) improvement in smoothness and engine response, which I wasn't expecting, given people's earlier comments. Not being an engineer or a petrochemist, this improvement seemed good enough reason for me to continue to use it, so I've stuck with it.

What I'm curious about is this.

Optimax sells at my usual garage for 6p per litre more than Premium 95 (at the moment, 87.9 as opposed to 81.9. Ouch.)

Went to France for two-week holiday at the start of July. Ran car on a mix of Total & Shell 98 octane - car continued to run very nicely. The price difference, I was interested to note, was 1 euro cent per litre (?1.19 as opposed to ?1.18).

So why the big difference in price between the two over here? Does the Gov't impose extra duty on the high-octane stuff, or is it just yet another example of the suppliers charging a lot more here for the same thing for no reason other than "because we can"? Read more

Thanks, all - yeah, Vansboy, quite a lot of placcy in the wallet already :-( , but can certainly find room for things that get me money off! Cheers for the tip.
