Hello,
I'm planning to switch from Rover 200vi to a family car. I know it's like comparing apples and oranges but I can't decide between Toyota Corolla 1.6 terra HB and Honda Jazz 1.4 LS. They share almost the same price tag in Turkey.

I also wonder which company is more reliable, Toyota or Honda?
Some advice please..

Personally speaking I would always go for a Japanese built car as opposed to one with just a Japanese name. The Toyota Yaris is being made in France now and I think quality has suffered. Don't know about the Corolla.

I'd go for the Honda everytime - made in Japan (for now anyway) I think they may be setting up a plant in Brasil soon though.

As a Honda and Toyota owner , I agree with Dulwich Estate and would go for the Honda although there is probably little to choose.

I think the hatchback corollas are built in UK (Derbyshire), along with the Avensis, while the estate and Verso corollas are built in Japan as is the Avensis Verso, but IIRC, there is a Toyota plant in Turkey, which probably supplies the home market. I agree, Japanese Toyotas are always better than French, UK, American (especially) etc.
The Jazz is an excellent car with few problems reported, though only one engine available, and can feel underpowered especially if air conditioning is running. The CVT auto box is very good. I personally prefer Toyotas to Hondas, the corolla is the worlds best selling car because it is very good, if not exactly desirable!

Why is a Japanese car thats built outside Japan less well built than a home market car?Sounds like an urban myth to me.

Honda - I speak from experience !

My JAPANESE built Corolla (old shape, 3 years old) has had £1200 GEARBOX REBUILD !!

Turns out Toyota have been sourcing sub-standard bearings for a while .. but haven't bothered to tell the public of course ...

Oh, and the Water Pump went AWOL, too.

I know this will open a can of worms here, but go buy a VW - maybe not a Golf, but the Bora has a good reputation.

Our New Beetle (also 3 years old) has had 1 fault - the flippy-up bin lid thing has lost it's spring .....

IMHO Japan build quality cf. others is no myth - just fact.
Have you been to Japan? Have you seen the obsessive nature of the people?

A train driver committed suicide last year because of letting down his company - he missed his spot where to stop his train by a couple of feet on two occasions. His bosses were most unhappy.

Wheras the French say, long lunches, countless bank holidays - all a bit like 1970's British Leyland really.

How many miles had your Toyota covered when its had bearing problems? I rather doubt Toyota were knowingly sourcing substandard bearings, it would hardly be in their interests. Where did this information come from?
honda or toyota? - T Lucas
No real facts there then,as ever good ole pub talk. Those blokes in Swindon, don't know what they are doing,or the Nissan boys in the North East, and god help you if you buy a Corolla built in Turkey, probably made with goats,or sheep or cheese.
Anyone rememember how sloppily built the Bluebird from the North East was?

AFAIK, the Toyota plant in Turkey makes the saloons. Rarely seen in the UK, but very popular in Ireland, and in all the many countries which (for various reasons) don't share the UK's insistence on hatchbacks.

I think we like the rear washwipe because its always raining and saloons don't have those (apart from the 306). There are quite a lot of cars that look much nicer as a saloon.

No no no! Beware of VW these days, especially the cr@p built in Mexico such as the Beetle etc! VW have lost the plot period

The reliability is very important but you also must consider depreciation. I just traded in an ''M'' reg Merc diesel and got £2500 depreciation in 3.5 years which is pretty good, ( this is not the old trap of an inflated new car price to compensate..I always check prices out before parting with hard earned!) You ought to check depreciation on your new one too.

Aprilia - what was so annoying was that the bearings started going just after the 60k warranty, and despite letters to Toyota UK, they refused to help (unless I paid in full, of course!)

The fault was well known by 3 different gearbox specialists and a Toyota mechanic I spoke to - seems Toyota had a faulty batch - the old shape Avensis had a whole run of these things, too.

Ah, where our New Beetle is made - I don't know what Beetle you have been looking at, but ours has been faultess in 3 years/60,000 miles - it's a better made job than either the Golf or Bora, IMHO ....

I had a Suburban made in Mexico - which meant it was a few quid cheaper. I never did work out why since I never found any fault with its quality or reliability. 'Course, it sucked the ptrol up, but they all do that.

Nothing mechanical has gone wrong with my UK built new shape Corolla. A few niggles, but it's an OK car.

Now Audi....PAH! Wheel bearing went in the first few hundred miles of owning the thing, along with countless other mechanical failings. Never an Audi again!

Arnold2,
A quick search of the Backroom reveals 20 or so negative comments from you about Toyota; all apparently based on a problem you had with this Corolla gearbox.

Hardly an objective appraisal of Toyota reliability?

In the car reliability surveys published here in Germany, Toyotas generally do better than Hondas.

Toyota also sell three times the number of cars that Honda do in Europe, so there are going to be more problems reported.

"Why is a Japanese car thats built outside Japan less well built than a home market car?Sounds like an urban myth to me."

No myth.

It's true also for other Japanese products. When I purchased my first Yamaha pianos, the Jap-built ones were clearly superior to the UK models.

Similarly, although I'm pleased with Mrsb's French-built Yaris and was happy with previous UK-built Avensis, my Japanese IS200 is a class apart.
honda or toyota? - CTY
Go for the Jazz- it's a superb car.

I believe there is a difference between a Japanese built and locally built car, for a start a certain percentage of the car must be locally sourced and as we know the car is a sum of it's parts.

My JAPANESE built N15 Nissan Almera looks and feels totally different to the British built N16 (current shape) Almera...in fact the N16 and the current shape Micra both feel very much like Renaults (part of the same company) which is a very bad thing indeed. e.g. the Micra has the same ridiculously over-servoed spongy brake pedal as the Clio/Kangoo.

Personally I will stick with Japanese built cars. Bland, maybe but you buy them for reliability and build quality.
honda or toyota? - wemyss
Agree entirely about the new shape Micra. Had one as a courtesy car and the brakes were awful. The lightest touch on the brake pedal brings you to an abrupt stop. I have never experienced anything quite like them. I suppose you could get used to it. Don't know if they have ABS but if not and used in an emergency on a slippery road they could be a problem.
