On my 2002 Focus 1.8TD, it seems like the aircon is cooling the air all the time - not as much as when the aircon is switched on but certainly cooler than it should be.

When I remove the relay the air temparature returns to normal, does this mean the relay is at fault - or is there a way I can check the relay or find what is going wrong.

I'm using the car without the relay in, as driving around the aircon partially on is a) costing me money! and b) steaming up the windows!

Not knowing anything about aircon, this has me stumped. Read more

Snakey

I've noticed the aircon runs when the demister is selected as you say - however the noticeably cooled air was coming through when the face/footwell vents were selected - I could actually hear the aircon 'click' into life when the bonnet was up.

Anyway, since I replaced the relay and ran the diagnostic check to see if there were any fault codes - everything has returned to normal! Hopefully this was a one off glitch!

Thanks for your comments/help - I'll put this one down to experience!

After No Dosh's dealings with New Car Leasing I decided to have a look myself.

I dealt with Dave and was very impressed with the service. He spent significant effort getting the inital quote I wanted, and then revisited 3 or 4 times as I explored different things before coming up with the final deal.

It was also an excellent deal financially and he has a willingness to beat any competitive offers that you have.

Delivery times and service appear to be excellent as well, although I will feed back on that when I've actually got the vehicle.

And no, ND, I will not be answering any questions as to what the vehicle actually is, nor how it is powered.

If they have the types of ideas you are interested in, then you really should give them a chance.

As a general rule could I ask people two things; if you deal with someone recommended by this site, then please tell them so that we receive due recognition. And please do feed back your opinions of them afterwards.

Took delivery of the L200 this week. A big thank-you to Phil Kehoe of www.new-car-leasing.co.uk/ for all his help and for keeping on top of Mitsubishi UK when it seemed the vehicle was going to sit around at the port for no particular reason.

The L200 was, contrary to my expectations, trailered down here and delivered with only 14miles on the clock.

Phil and his team have given us an excellent vehicle at a superb price and have gone out of their way to keep us informed during the lead-in time from the factory in Japan.

Well done guys, I could very well be back next year for a little something for myself.

Anybody got any ideas, I have try Hammerite but it just burns of as the exhaust gets very hot. The scooter is a Gilera runner 180 vxr. I had thought of a manifold paint but can`t come up with anything. Read more

I would have thought most, if not all car accessory shops sell exhaust paint. I certainly remember buying some silver exhaust paint for one of my old motorbikes.

A friend of mine has an "M" reg Skoda Felicia with either a 1.1 or 1.4 engine. It overheated last week and the garage man has stated that the head is badly corroded, it is a very common fault on these engines and it is very hard to obtain a new head or recon spare.

Can anyone help to locate a new/recon head. We are located near Swindon but I suppose he could pay transport costs.

TIA

Tricky - I had a mare of a time getting parts for my Favorit, simply because they just keep on running and don't get scrapped. You could always try the national parts search lines from you yellow pages, scrap section. It'll cost about a quid a time.

Make sure you get exactly the right head though - the 'e' variants of the engine were higher compression/power than the bog-standard ones to give back some of the power robbed by the move to fuel injection + cat, so I imagine the structure might be tougher. Some cars were designated 'e' until around the year of yours, but after that they were all 'e' series so lost the extra letter on the bootlid.

Just over 12 Months ago, I bought a FOrd Focus frmo virgin cars on a Bank of Scotland 4 year HP scheme. I have made all my payments for the last 13 months on time but due to a change in my financial circumstances, will no longer be afford to keep up payments.

Does anybody know how easy it is to terminate such an agreement, what the penalties are and if it will give me a bad credit rating? Don't want to approach the Bank if this is not worthwhile. I have also gone over my allocated mileage!

Thanks in advance,

Mapmaker - about time to let it go, I think.

I've been thinking about taking a living room sofa on the roof bars of my car. Why? Well, it's too big to fit inside the car and I want it somewhere else. It weighs less than 75kg (max recommended weight) and is narrower and shorter than the car. Trying to imagine it I think it would be just about 1m tall and looking a bit silly.

Fuel consumption would suffer and maybe rocking it (with acceleration and braking) on 2 bars at 700mm spacing might cause damage to the roof rails and fixings. Do I want 3 or even 4 bars on the roof?

Anybody got any views?

PS I was at Dover recently (in the ferry queue)and saw an estate car with roof rails where the owner had laid 3 suitcases on the roof, yes, on the roof itself and not on bars. He had one elastic cord per suitcase stretched across the roof rails. How he ever got to Dover without the lot ending up on his bonnet I don't know. Did he get far in France I wonder?

Anyway - any views on a sofa please. Read more

Volvo oposite direction on the A5 just south of Towcester this afternoon with sofa on the roof rack. Covered in rapidly shredding polythene and looking distinctly unstable. Might have made Stony Stratford, but no way Bordeaux.

Are there any rules when deciding whether to venture through a puddle or do the sensible thing and go home? The guideline I have in mind is don't venture into anything deeper than half way up your wheels ie hub line. That would mean I roughly had 8" limit on water depth. My air intake is high up on the left hand side of the car.

I have been through quite a number of puddles varying in size from 1/2" deep to just over kerb height deep. One of them turned part of the front spoiler inside out (even though I only went through quite slowly) and made it drag on bumps on the road making an awful noise! I now have grass hanging off the exhaust pipe.... Some people were going up the kerb and having one side of the car in the water. I drove nearer the crown of the road thinking that is the shallowest point.

Any better ways of doing puddle driving without having to fit a snorkel on the air intake and an extension on the exhaust to get it out of the water?

Hi,

This is my first post to this forum - and I do hope that your guys could help.

I have a 1997 Vauxhall Omega 2.5V6 Auto, and up until now it has been fine - but over the weekend I got the 'Coolant Level' warning on the trip computer (and I had filled it up just the day before). I looked at the level later that evening and it was full.

Driving the car on Monday, I had the same message come up several times, and I also noticed that the temperature gauge went from zero to about the halfway mark in about 10 minutes (while my BMW takes about 20minutes or so). While drving I have noticed that the needle creeps past the halfway mark - but when I'm stopped at a traffic light the needle comes down below the halfway mark (possibly because the fan has kicked in). Any ideas guys as to what it might be?

Also, does anyone know of any reliable Vauxhall mechanics in the NW London area other than the main dealers?

Many Thanks

whats the level sender unit.

It's a float type device with an incorperated switch. Depending on the level of water, the switch will either be on or off.
or the header tank?

It's also known an expansion tank. You mentioned earlier up this thread that you checked the coolant level - well that's the tank that ST is referring to.

I am experiencing an intermittent major electrical outage.
I have had the vehicle 5 weeks and the problem has occured twice in the last week.

Remote unlocking OK
Interior light, red LEDs OK.
Turn ignition key and the whole of dash stays blank.
Take key out and try parking lights and they do not work.

A little while later all is fine and working.
12.65V on battery terminals and on the engine block.

The battery terminals look spotless but not greased.
I will disconnect both terminals, clean them with fine emery paper, reconnect and grease em.

I do not know how old the battery is but it is clean although the car has been valetted by a dealer prior to my buying it.
The plastic filler caps do show signs of regular removal.

Amazingly we have had hardly any rain here so I do suspect damp.

Any thoughts or suggestions on the problem?

Hope this might be of interest....bit long-winded but bear with me..

Thanks mike100.
I will obtain and carry a spare for said fuse and also a spare of the higher rated ones.
I will try a little loom flexing in case I have the same problem as you. Once I had identified which fuse was involved it did register the potential problem of a sudden dead engine that you experienced. With no lights working it would add an extra risk to the problem. Having just changed to an auto box, unlike kicking the clutch in when a cam belt went on a previous car, I would not instinctively slot into neutral to keep some momentum going.
I guess my other hope is a previous owner recalls a problem.

My 53 reg Mondeo TDCi 130 LX developed a resonance between 1800-2000 rpm, just where the engine developes maximum torque in each gear. Not horrendous, but it spoils the refinement of the car and is extremely annoying. The workshop manager at my local Ford dealers came out in the car with me and identified it as being caused by the turbopipe vibrating against the chassis rail because of inadequate insulation. Ford know of the problem and have produced a fixing kit for dealers, which the WM fitted. All was well for few weeks, then the resonance came back. WM checked and found the fixing kit was still in place, and tried re-positioning the turbopipe bracket. Again, all was OK for a few weeks, then it started up again. Before I take the car in again, has anyone had the same sort of experience, or any views, advice etc to offer, please? Many thanks, Graham
