Towbar Electrics for Multiplexed Cars - Dr Rubber
All,
Has anybody had any experience fitting a non-dealer towbar to a multiplexed car? Browsing the web suggests this is possible, but only with the right kit. I don't want to muck up my Touran's electrics, but I don't want to give my local VAG dealer an arm and two legs for the offical product.

ps. It will get done by a towbar speciallist. Any recomendations for the Bristol area?

I should think that any competant towbar fitting or caravan workshop would be able to do it. 'Awkward' systems used to be dealt with by using current sensing relays.
Much simplified, one wire of the relay is connected to the vehicle battery, another is connected to the trailer bulb. A third wire is connected to the circuit being monitored. It doesn't draw any current from the circuit and doesn't affect it in any way, but it senses a current and switches on or off the connection between battery and trailer bulb as required. Problems are that a separate relay is needed for each circuit and room is needed to store the relays.
If you're near to an Indespension dealer, they sell a very good booklet covering all aspects of towing and wiring etc.

Get onto Towsure or Discount Towing(they're both on the net)and they list out all the relays and connectors needed for all types of cars including multiplexed and vehicles with bulb-failure circuits.

Thanks for the replies, thats what I thought - I just wanted to make sure.
The TowBar specialist I contacted said they could do it, and there is a spare supply in the boot. And they want 500ukp less than VAG. I don't want to do it myself as I can't buy the bits for much less than they want.
