I have just had a few days in Yorkshire and have come across a new confusing traffic signal. At some cross roads the main ahead signal is RED but underneath or at the side is a GREEN signal for the same direction!? This of course put me in great confusion....which do I obey? I sort of slowed down and observed what the state of play was with other traffic and went when I thought it was safe. Any N Yorks folks able to elucidate.? Read more
Can anyone tell me where to find a detailed diagram of the vacuum tube fittings on the carb of a 1984 Polo 1050cc. The original carb had been removed, I've replaced it, but the fittings are slightly different. My Haynes manual dosn't show enough detail! Read more
I had a quick look on www.elcats.ru and found the following diagram which I hope is of some use to you. If not, browse around the site (not easy when its in russian?) and see what you can find.

How much of the lumpy ride for low profile tyres is down to the tyre diameter or brand?
I chose to have 17" wheels on my A4 on the basis that I didn't like any of the 16" options. However, on checking the tyres are Conti-sports 235/45. Would changing to a 235/50 in a softer compound make much difference?
The Contis are great on smooth roads. Presumably Germany doesn't have potholes or cheapo tarmac on badly maintained B roads. Read more
doesn't diametre of 17" wheels + low profile tyres = 16"
wheels + high profile tyres?
My understanding was that Steve was thinking of putting higher profile tyres on his existing 17" rims, meaning a greater wheel diameter. If you reduce the size of your rims you can have a higher profile tyre and keep the same wheel diameter.
I have 15" rims with 225/60 tyres on them. The ride is lovely.
Brand new to this forum, wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
Exhaust emissions warning light came on a few months back, battery cut out, car wouldn't start, and after being towed to a local garage, spent 4 weeks there before they told me that it was all down to a corroded wire.
Same light came on a couple of days ago after I went over a particularly vicious speed bump.
-Should I assume it's the same problem or something more serious??
-Does the engine need to be subjected to computer diagnostics every time this happens?
-Can anyone recommend a good garage near Chichester?
Appreciate any input.
Thanks. Read more
Suggest the corroded wire was a main earth strap. May possibly be the same problem if rectification not competently done.If the EML has lit up then a code has been stored which may shed some light on the problem. Look for our ad in Y Pages, (car engine tuning and conversions)

Simplicate and add lightness!!
Have just bought a J reg. 205 for my son to learn/practice in- excellent condition and drives nicely. No service history however. Can any backroomer tell me the recommended mileage for timing belt renewal? The car has done 105K, so I assume it would have been changed at least once!
Many thanks,

Thanks very much for your super prompt reply. Very interesting.
Your point about idlers and water pumps is appreciated - I doubt whether the idler bearings have ever been changed - in 24 years! ...
The heater on my golf is only blowing out lukewarm air even when turned up full.
The heater matrix was changed under a VW recall about 3 years ago.
I have recently discovered a tiny leak in the radiator and there is a a tiny leak in the hot water feed hose to the matrix. I am about to replace both of these.
Some people have said that the matrix is blocked and needs flushing is this easy to do?
Others have said that there is a valve that allows hot water into the matrix and this might have stuck.
Can anyone offer any explanation as to why the heater should be blowing lukewarm air?
Thanks.

No it is just the hoses. So I suspect that the recall was not carried out properly!!! Which could lead to the matrix going again??
Should I contact VW and ask what I should have had done?
Cheers.
Colin.

Living not a million miles away and using these roads on a reasonably frequent basis I tend to notice when I get a traffic alert covering this junction. This nearly always involves
(3 last week) an overturned lorry.
I belive this junction was remodelled as part of the A43 upgrade, certainly there were still roadworks there a couple of years ago. Have they simply stuffed up the camber of the exit ramps and roundabouts?

Sorry to bring up a very old thread:
In todays news, they are about to spend £60,000 improving warning signs on Junction 10 to try and prevent
articulated HGVs overturning.

I was sat at home on Friday and became aware of a less than roadworthy vehicle coming up the street - it sounded like the exhaust had fallen off the H reg Micra! It crawled past our house with the driver revving the engine and slipping the clutch just to get it up the hill.
On this occasion the car was being followed by the police. Driver was told to go in to a side street. The driver was asked a few questions, but it quickly became evident the driver's English was limited. The policeman asked if the driver was insured, he couldn't answer. PNC check seemed to suggest no insurance on vehicle. The driver was carted away and car removed within 30 minutes - is this a record? Read more
Oh yes I like that!!
However the charge should be directed at the car owner. No sure how you would get their details though?

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
I'm sure that in a few years temporary traffic lights will have small cameras built in, to catch the drivers going through on red. After all they have the technology to detect if a car is there, and it wouldn't take much to adapt them.
