Any one had water in passenger footwell? Location of leak? Thanks

Check all the drain areas underbonnet that side. Clear of leaves and debris etc. The door membranes perish and let water in. You'd need to whip the door card of the passenger side to check it out.

Had same problem, likely to be door membranes as stated elsewhere.

This is a known and common MkII problem and is caused by, as already stated, the door membranes. Something to do with a supplier's quality not being to the required standards.

Replacing (best to do all of them) will cure the leak immediately, but make sure that the carpets and vehicle are thoroughly dried out before replacing the carpets.

It's nothing to do with the quality of the membrane, it's just bad design and it affects MK1 Golfs, MK2 Polos and probably many other VW's as well. In the hot weather the plastic membrane is stretched, in the cold weather it contracts and after a few years it splits. Great. I've replaced so many of these over the years I could almost replace one blind-folded.

Advice when fitting - fix it slack to allow for expansion and contraction. Also run some silicone sealant around the edge of the membrane. Not had a failure yet.

You've been unlucky then. It's only happened once to me during my ownership of two Jettas and a Bora over 12 years - it was the big bumper Jetta TX that suffered the leak and I replaced all the membranes as a matter of course.

Check your coolent level, your heater matrix may have gone, if so when replacing the matrix ensure that the VW bypass mod has been done.

From under the bonnet remove plastic cover to windscreen wiper motor area, hoover out leaves where water drains into the inner wheel arches. Rain water overflows in via clutch cable hole and air intake to heater motor.

Definateley agree with big cat on this one. A classic piece of poor VW design, and a very common fault as the car ages. Remedy as stated above is spot on.
