Question Online parts?
Steveo4869

Apologies if this has been covered, I did check. Does anyone have details of any good online parts companies. I am particularly looking for suppliers of Driveshafts and CV joints.

Thanks.

I am looking at purchasing a used Peugeot 306. What would be considered high mileage for a Peugeot 306 HDI estate?

Also if anyone could tell me anything imparticular I should look out for or anything I should be asking the seller when viewing such a car, I'd be grateful.

Thanks a lot, Kris Read more

Yes it is indeed of help. I'll take it to my local friendly garage and expect a bit of a bill.

By the way, the engine revs do drop and there is a click when i turn it on, so it's still working, jsut not actually doing any cooling. It also makes a rather unhappy sound. Quite a groaning type noise. Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread, I shall leave now. Thanks again Mr Dieselhead.

After putting it off for as long as I can, the time has come to fill in the dreaded Tax Return. Looking through the form has given me an attack of dyslexia, and my brain (Windows 52 edition) just shuts down when it tries to process the incomprehensible garbage therein.

Does anyone file online, and is it successful and easy to do? My experience of govenment websites (DSA) suggests not, but is the Inland Rev any better?

Question Car costs
fastlad

As most people will know diesels cost about £1000-1500 more to buy new over the simular petrol petrol models. If you keep the car along time it shoule work out cheaper in the long run. However if you do an average mileage of about 10-12000 per year and look a three (3) year running cost, how do you work the costs out????? Read more

Two commonly held misbeliefs highlighted in one thread.

Diesels cost £1000-1500 more than petrol equivalents - not always the case. The new smart forfour diesel is cheaper than the petrol. Some Mercedes diesels are the same price. Second hand this difference can almost disappear - my 6 month old Audi was only £200 more than the petrol version.

Diesel servicing costs more - again not always true. It depends on the car and the servicing intervals - my Audi diesel costs the same to service as the petrol but needs servicing less often so works out cheaper.

.... frequently seem to worry so much about the cost of petrol/diesel or an extra few mpg?

I haven't done all the maths but compared to the amount lost through depreciation I'd have thought a few pence on a gallon or and extra +/- 3 mpg isn't worth worrying about.

"The government should put a ban on the sale of new cars for six months"

You you might find that could lead to the odd economic difficulty here and there.

I had removed both front ABS sensors from my 1993 L reg Citroen Xantia 1.9TD SX and they have got mixed up. They look identical apart from a small number on each, one says 1 and the other says 2. Does anyone know which is which? I know I should lable things as I take them off and hopefully this will serve as a lesson to me! Read more

Doc, thanks a lot for the info, much appreciated.

I have been on holiday most of the summer (kids are off school) and as usual have bought and sold a couple of cars to keep myself amused (I don't make much money on them, by the time all the messing about is account for - just in case Mr Taxman is reading!).

Anyway, I quite like buying and selling Mercedes because I know the cars well and can rectify any little faults. I have noticed that a lot of more recent MB's are showing signs of rust though.

I am familiar with the potential rust spots on the early W210 E-class (e.g. around the number plate area and door handles etc.) but I had thought that more recent cars would be better. From my recent experiences this seems not to be the case though.

A good example was a car that was bought to me this morning. A W-plate CLK in black with 50k on it. I looked around and was astonished to find rust on the boot lid and door bottoms. We're not talking little tiny spots, either. There were a couple of 1x2 inch rusty areas right on the back, were the depression for the number plate is. The paint had blistered up and would have lifted off had a poked it with a fingernail. This is more the sort of thing associated with FIAT.

Older cars, like early '90's, W201 and W124 are still largely rust free. If one does encounter rust it is usually a result of a scrape. They only tend to rust around the jacking tubes in the sills (where the welding seems to destroy the galvanising).

It is very disappointing that these newer MB's are showing this problem. Definitely something to look out for if buying one of these cars used. Read more

Faulty memory then. Tata do the paintwork for Mercedes.

So presumably have Mercedes quality approval? We'll have to ask the guide dog in charge for the definitive answer.

Hi there,

I will be emigrating to Australia soon and want to know if any back roomer's have had any experiences with Aussie cars (Fords, Holden's) or any of the available Japanese cars there.

I know that you can get most European cars, but just testing the water for something different....maybe! Read more

LOL!

I remember a few years ago seeing some Aussie road racing on TV here (UK). I imagine this was bought by mistake, as it was hugely entertaining, and included a voice link to the drivers, who were a) driving out of their skins, and b) quite happy to provide a running commentary, liberally sprinkled with abuse at the other drivers. It made F1 look very tame...

I\'m not sure if the dipped headlights on my 54plate Primera has been set up right, for xenon lights they seem to cast a patchy pool of light? without much throw, any ideas.

I know nothing about Primera Xenons. However, my A4 Xenons are self levelling (ie no headlight adjustment on the dash), which seems to work well. Perhaps your Primera has this but it isn't working for whatever reason.

Anyone used this company for tyres? They're undercutting my local by £40. Failing that, anyone know cheapest place for tyres in the Warrington area?

I also found them to be very good for prices. Oredered four Bridgestones - they came in three days time (delivered from Germany!)Paid my local back street (non chain) tyre fitter/supplier £20 - to fit and balance all four tyres.

Would definatly buy from mytres.net again.
