hello all. I am pondering on buying a car for my lovely pregnant lady friend. Not looking to spend a great deal, not that I think little of her you understand!!!! a guy at my work is selling a Fiat Brava P plate 5dr hatch 1.4 SX for a steal at £250, it's T&T until the end of the year, it has a rather nasty amount of mileage on it, he tells me 130-140k which is quite severe, not sure if I am in for a hammering come MOT time. hmmm, can anyone comment on any prior dealing with high mileage Brava's? or them in general, he states there was a recent oil leak which has now been fixed and also there is no radio in it (probably to listen previously to the leaking oil!!!), not the end of the world but does the radio have to be Fiat specifically? I was considering going down the line of a 5dr Fiesta between K-M plate for about 500 sovs but this seems a steal, or will it be daylight robbery?
any advice always welcome.
Thanks

I suffered a cam belt failure on my 1995 1.2 petrol clio today. The car has 87k miles on the clock and has had belts changed at 30k and 60k at the suggestion of my local independent garage. Am I to expect major engine damage on this type of motor or will it be a case of a quick check and a new belt. I do not have much knowledge of this particular engine.

In view of the care you have taken, it may be worth writing to Renault UK to see what they have to say about such a premature failure of a replacement cambelt, and asking whether or not they would be prepared to contribute towards the costs of repairs.

Recently I have had a couple of electrical faults. Please share your experience / advice (if it will be helpful)!
Easy one first:
This morning my rear windscreen wiper decided to turn itself on and doesn't want to turn off. The switch was in the 'off' position, but fiddling with the switch doesn't seem to make any difference. It has been raining a lot recently - I'll see what happens if / when the weather starts to dry out...
And the tricky one:
A couple of weeks ago I was hoovering my car (weather was dry, driver's door was open) and the radio turned itself on, even though I hadn't touched any of the buttons / steering column stalks etc. What makes it even stranger is that the key was in my pocket, NOT the ignition, at the time... Harv, just a thought - If you let it run (I know, it hurts on a dry screen, although not much risk of that currently) does it cover about 12-15 sweeps and then stop wherever it likes? I had a similar problem after a repair to the rear of a 406, and the cause was a wire off the connector by the wiper motor - brown as I recall.
Can't help with the radio I'm afraid - it's just a Pug.........
A friend of mine is looking to buy a Toyota Previa Diesel from around 1994 (c £4000). Is this a good year/price to buy at, and what sort of mpg can he expect from the 2.2 Diesel engine.
Any comments much appreciated! Read more
You will necessarily have to buy an import. 90-2000 model was only ever sold in the UK with the excellent chain cam drive 2.4 petrol engine. Manual, expect around 24mpg average, auto 22. I've given two of these a very hard time over 13 years and 260000 miles betweeen them, not a single problem.
Look out for some imports, sorry I don't know model description, which are about 90mm narrower, a sort of sideways cut, chop and shut; you can't lay a 4 foot wide sheet flat in the back, crucial to a builder like me and largely defeats the object of a previa's huge space and elbow room.
Must say the imports invariably look very smart and well kept but ughh... that rear bumper view mirror hanging off the back!
Hello
I cannot open the hatchback on my 1995 Seat Toledo :-(
There are two catches, one on each side of the hatch. One of these unlocks ok, but one does not.
The mechanism from the key moves ok and appears to be still connected to the broken catch.
To access the screws holding the catch to the bodyshell and the hatchback requires the hatch to be open... :-(((
Any suggestions as to how I can get the hatch open?
TIA

>>The mechanism from the key moves ok and appears to be still connected to the broken catch.
It cant be if it wont release. unless there is a failure in the mechanism. would suggest taking to Seats or ask them by phone and see what they come up with. As mentioned before?

2. Drivers electric window intermitant on down movement
3. Cant locate fan or heater controls (no manual and all switches have no markings), heater appears to be ON

I had a 1966 S3 for nine years until it was stolen and never recovered.
The clutch can be adjusted. The slave cylinder has a rod which fits into the clutch fork. The rod is threaded with a large nut and lock nut which adjusts the effective length of the rod.
The windows stick in the guides and need regular maintenance. The window, frame and motor can be removed as one unit which gives access to the operating cables pulleys etc which need greasing. I found the cables would rust then snap and I used bicycle inner gear cables as replacements.
The heater valve control is screwed into the cylinder head next to the thermostat housing and is operated by a wire (similar to the old choke cables) and is the first pull button on the left on the dash. The heater fan switch is just to the right.
To jack the car the jack the jack must be placed under the front or rear lower wishbones (workshop manual).
I soon found out that Lotus stands for Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious........but it was worth it!
Just bought a Mazda 2 1.4 Capella with Auto Shift transmission. Car great and box seems fine. Just wondered if anybody had found the same as me ie in Auto mode the changedown from 2nd to 1st as you brake (ie stopping at lights) can be felt ever so slightly through the break pedal (ie I'm aware of first being selected by the engine). Think I may just be being too over aware of stuff because it's new! Any thoughts/experiences welcomed. Also wondered how other drivers get on with this overlooked car? Read more
As you've also posted this in Technical Matters, I'll lock this one to prevent repetition of any potential answers.
If anyone can help 071, then please reply in Tech Matters.

I collect my new car (first ever diesel) next Wednesday. Oooh! I'm tingly all over and covered with goosebumps in anticipation.
Yes, yes it's the one I can afford because I've worked hard, paid off my mortgage, nearly finished paying for the school fees and so on.
Now then - how do I run in a diesel? What revs? For how long? etc. etc.
It comes full of fuel (unknown brand - probably Tesco as it's nearest to the dealer), but after that I intend to use BP premier cru because you all tell me to. Read more
Best of luck, Dulwich Estate - hope you enjoy it.
Don't be disappointed if you think your new car lacks oomph: I've found that diesels - VW/Audi ones at any rate - take a long time to free up and deliver full performance. Mine is a 2.5 TDI and it's still improving at 8500 miles. The Golf 1.9 TDI which I had before was the same.
Not having seen HJ's advice about running-in until now, I was gentler with mine than he recommends, as I've always believed that not exceeding 3,000 rpm for the first 1,000 miles (also not letting the engine labour at very low revs) leads to nil oil consumption later on.
I had seven very reliable Renaults that never used any oil, even at over 100,000 miles. But these were petrol-powered so I defer to HJ's expertise!
Motorway Layouts.
While driving through the road works on the western section of the M25 at various times of the day (including rush hours) I was struck by the following observation.
Northbound, two lanes are moved into the opposing carriageway with no access off for three junctions. Two lanes remain for access on and off the motorway.
Even during high demand, during rush hour, the two ?no access lanes? (assuming no accidents or breakdowns) flow smoothly at the posted 40mph limit. The two ?access? lanes are backed up constantly.
This leads me to assume that it?s the act of leaving and joining motorways that cause the most agro.
So my idea, on urban motorways in the UK that suffer jams, is to provide two lanes for local, joining and leaving, and two physically separated lanes for through traffic, perhaps with leaving and joining intersections every three or four junctions or so..
The two outer lanes would obviously be the ?through lanes? and the joining intersections in the outside lane of the ?local lanes?
In effect a Motorway within a Motorway.
I have seen similar ideas in use in the UK and abroad, but these seem to be by accident rather than design usually after extra lanes or junctions have been added.
If the M25 was built with 2 outer lanes ?through traffic? and two inner lanes ?local and access? with crossovers every 4 junctions I bet it would be transformed.

but the fact that what should be local traffic using local A roads is overloading the motorway.>>
That was precisely the point I made earlier in the thread.
Multiply this by virtually every junction (and if I remember rightly the M25 is about 117 miles long if you complete the full circle) and you get the picture.

When it changes down to first you are getting more inlet manifold vacuum so there will be a little more servo action. You may therefore feel the pedal 'sink' a little beneath your foot, as well as feeling the additional engine braking from the lower gear. This is quite common on auto's.
Brava/o designed by Chris Bangle no less!.. where else could you get a Bangle for 250 sovs?
