Toyota Previa 1990-2000 Diesel - PhilDews
A friend of mine is looking to buy a Toyota Previa Diesel from around 1994 (c £4000). Is this a good year/price to buy at, and what sort of mpg can he expect from the 2.2 Diesel engine.

Any comments much appreciated!

My uncle recently got an early 90s Japanese import (Estima), 2.2TD, auto, 4 wheel drive, and gets around 30mpg though he isn't the slowest of drivers.

There are loads of these coming through the import auctions for a fraction of the price of similar UK version.

You will necessarily have to buy an import. 90-2000 model was only ever sold in the UK with the excellent chain cam drive 2.4 petrol engine. Manual, expect around 24mpg average, auto 22. I've given two of these a very hard time over 13 years and 260000 miles betweeen them, not a single problem.

Look out for some imports, sorry I don't know model description, which are about 90mm narrower, a sort of sideways cut, chop and shut; you can't lay a 4 foot wide sheet flat in the back, crucial to a builder like me and largely defeats the object of a previa's huge space and elbow room.

Must say the imports invariably look very smart and well kept but ughh... that rear bumper view mirror hanging off the back!
