Hi
Any suggestions as to what could be causing my 306 xsi to steer left all the time? It's not tyre pressures and the garage who serviced and MOT'd said the tracking was fine.
It is very annoying! Any thoughts?

So no bricks. I would like to think I would have thought twice about that one anyway, but sometimes my mind does funny things. I like the idea of using the spare wheel. Makes loads of sense! Why didn't I think of that?!
Cheers! Fingers crossed it solves the problem.
My 2001 2.0L Ford Focus has just been to the local Ford dealer for its 3 year service. The car has done 30,000 miles compared to 37,500 which is the expected mileage for this service. Every thing went fine until the service receptionist stated that the mechanic noticed the brakes were slightly louder under braking than expected so they very courteously performed a free brake analysis.
Any way to make a long story longer the receptionist stated everything seemed OK, the pads had approx 50% wear left but the front disks were 1 - 1.5mm above the recommended thickness and she suggested at the next service these would need changing. I ran my fingers up both disks and there is definitely a pronounced lip at the edges.
Here is my problem, I have owned the vehicle from new (4 delivery miles on the clock) and have NEVER had the pads changed. Therefore the only conclusion I can draw is the pads are more durable than the disks HOW ON EARTH CAN THIS BE.

Richard,
They are vented so I assume I will just have to swallow the expense and get them changed.

My wife pointed this out to me, so this very morning I tried it out.
At about 75mph, there is a faint judder that is easily passed off as wheel balancing, but take it up to 100mph and the whole car judders quite a bit.
It's not through the steering wheel but "feels" like it emanates (sp?) from the front.
I'm thinking bent driveshaft, I'm thinking lots of money.
Any ideas?
and before anyone says it, yes I could just stick to the motorway speed limit and the problem won't appear. Read more
Is this a quattro or 2wd? Wheel bearings at the back maybe?
I was coming up a hill after a long run and noticed some blue smoke, after coming over the brow heard a horrible noise and the car stalls. Pulled over and had a look and the grooved altenator belt was in 1000 shreds. The car is being towed to a garage to be inspected tommorrow.
Does anyone have any experience and would know where to look first for the cause..

>Don'n know why the blue smoke
That was the belt burning as it went over the seized pulley. Good job it didn't break as they have a habit of going into the timing cover and ripping the cambelt off. Big ouch.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
Hi all, Wonder if anyone may hazard a guess - Recently found that the manifold has fractured on my 2000 306 1.6 petrol. So whilst waiting to get part, for what looks like a simple bolt off bolt on procedure (?), tonight the orange warning light that resembles engine block has illuminated, coupled with a struggling engine at low revs.
Fortunately only 100Yds from home, but am wondering are the two events probably linked? and therefore resolved by replacing manifold..... whadya reckon?
Thanks for any ideas,
Mark

I'm not sure which manifold you mean, probably the exhaust manifold but it could be the inlet manifold. Either one would make the engine run below par, especially inlet manifold that will upset the petrol / air mixture badly.
If it's the exhaust manifold perhaps the leak has upset the oxygen sensor located close by on the exhaust down pipe (has a wire attached). This may account for the warning light and poor running.
Best bet is to repair the manifold then take it from there, see how it runs. If you are lucky it will be a temporary fault that sorts itself out.
I have called it a sting because I am convinced that is what it is.
We haven't seen the real increases yet because the hike mostly affected oil for September delivery, so watch what happens next week onwards.
But the reason? Nearly every report blames the situation in Iraq reducing supplies. This doesn't ring true because the export of Iraqi oil has been almost non-existant for years.
So, what is the truth? All I can think of is a scheme to punish and eventually remove George Dubya (no bad aim!) as Americans see their cheap petrol become more expensive.
However, that could just be a spin-off from the real reason. Any ideas? Read more
Would that be peanut oil?
Charmed as I am by the eloquence displayed in this thread, I can't see how this will be anything other than a political / economic discussion.
I'm locking this one.

The real tractor was the Montego fitted with the Perkins Prima direct injection engine. Said to be a good, economical and reliable unit, one of the pioneers of direct-injection diesels in cars, along with the Fiat Tipo. But the Prima engine WAS really clattery, even more so in the Maestro van non-turbo version. I rode in a Diesel Momtego once, and from inside it wasn't too noisy.
The VW Polo with the 3-cylinder 1.4 Tdi engine has a muted tractorish sound on tickover.
I've seen a few Aixam microcars about (look like miniature Renault Twingos). With their 500 cc 2-cylinder Kubota diesel engine they sound more like a dumper! But 100+ mpg is said to be possible.

Hi,
My Pugs a 306XTDT (1993) with 132K on the clock.
I'm still investigating the slight steering pull my car has to the right. Car has new wishbones, and new tie rod ball joints, 4-wheels aligned and has just passed its annual MOT.
My suspicion regarding the steering pull is currently on the steering rack. I notice that when I rock the steering with engine turned off (car has power steering) I get a slight knock-knock sound (as if there is some play). I dont know whether this is normal or its just me getting paranoid. Im sure if it was bad, it would have failed the MOT as the MOT garage is quite fussy. Fellow Pug306 owners try it out and let me know.
I had a look at the Peugeot CD parts catalogue, and it appears the steering rack ram piston has a clip-on washer between the piston ram and the connecting rod (in the rubber gaiter).
Do these wear?Has anyone ever had to change these? Also the connecting rods must have some sort of ball joint at the ram end. Again, do these wear, has anyone had to change these (the connecting rods)?
Your thoughts appreciated.
Regards

Re steering pull problem..I replaced the wishbone bushes and swapped the OSF and NSF tyres over on my 306 last night as the NS was wearing badly on the outide edge. This caused the steering to pull to the right. Replacing the tyres in their origonal position has totally cured the problem. Just need to get the tracking done now.
Just thought yours could be a similar problem, if one tyres worn more than the other and you swapped them over after working on the car, suggest swapping fronts over to see if it makes any difference.
Hi everyone,
Looking to buy myself a new car, and the one I want is on variuos websites, including those mentioned above, at massive discounts.
I've just asked if my local dealer can match and surprise surprise all I get from them is that they can't match it because it must be an import etc etc.
So has anyone used any of these retailers recently, and if so, what were your experiences please.
Now the dealer has said that, I can't help being a little more cautious about buying on the net. Some of the cars are listed as preregistered. Should this be of concern?
Thanks

Don't know about these specific companies, but ...
Some online discount dealers operate as intermediaries between you and UK main dealers, giving you the benefits of bulk purchasing discounts. You pay the online dealer a nominal deposit, but all your subsequent dealings are with the UK main dealer, and the car is sourced, supplied and delivered by the UK main dealer. You are entitled to manufacturer's warranties and special offers, and can specify dealer options exactly the same as if you had walked through the UK main dealer's front door.
It's as safe as anything in this world can be.
One example of such a dealer is www.drivethedeal.com/

They do and it goes once on boost.
