I am looking at purchasing a used Peugeot 306. What would be considered high mileage for a Peugeot 306 HDI estate?
Also if anyone could tell me anything imparticular I should look out for or anything I should be asking the seller when viewing such a car, I'd be grateful.

Air conditioning is a weak point on the 306 - usually the condenser and pipework at the bottom of the radiator go which costs a few hundred pounds to have put right profesionally. Make sure you hear the compressor 'click' otherwise assume the system is out of gas and in need of work.
Others may diagree, but i think the hdi is a reliable engine and most owners are very happy with them. 200k+ should be easily possible if the oil and coolant have been changed regularly.
They do suffer from a few minor niggles such as broken door check straps, worn wishbone bushes and loose trim but these are usually easy to fix.

My mate's running a 2000W one that's now done 120k - he's had it since Christmas and put 17k on it. Needed a new crankshaft pulley, and one of the fans is playing up, but otherwise engine is very sound.

Sorry to butt into your thread, but I was wondering if I could pick Dieselhead's brains further about 306 aircon. I was the unfortunate person unaware of the need to listen for the click in my xsi and have since found that the air con was not working. I had it filled up with gas as it was empty and in a couple of months it has now got to the stage where it still clicks but does nothing. I assume it is leaking out. Is this a symptom of the condenser and pipework at the bottom of the radiator 'going' or can I hope that I have a hole in a pipe which will presumably be cheaper. Any further knowledge on this? I guess I should just take it to the garage.

Very common problem on 306's my local air con place told me. I took mine in to be re-gassed and they had an R reg Lx and an W reg xsi waiting for new condensers and pipes fitting.
First thing i think i would do is get the pressure checked to find out how much gas is in the system but it does sound like it's leaking and not a faulty compressor clutch or something else. A basic check is to see if the engine revs drop slightly at idle and that the air con pipe under the radiator gets hot when the system is on.
Apparently the pipes fail where they pass through rubber mounts so it could be possible for the garage to check these with their 'gas sniffer' but it's quite likely the condensor will also be in a bad state if it's the origonal and more than a few years old. I changed just the condenser (which was literally falling apart) and now i suspect the pipes are leaking compressor oil and will need changing soon + another re-gass. Condensors are about £120 not sure about the two alloy pipes maybe £50 + another £150 or so for fitting.
It's possible to remove the condenser on a diy basis after having the system de-pressurised. Removing the radiator is tricky because of the bayonet fitting on the bottom radiator hose. A special tool is needed to remove the pipe from your old condensor (this one is usually ok) so it might be best to let the garage do it if you don't want the hassle. Hope this is of some help.

Yes it is indeed of help. I'll take it to my local friendly garage and expect a bit of a bill.
By the way, the engine revs do drop and there is a click when i turn it on, so it's still working, jsut not actually doing any cooling. It also makes a rather unhappy sound. Quite a groaning type noise. Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread, I shall leave now. Thanks again Mr Dieselhead.
