I was coming up a hill after a long run and noticed some blue smoke, after coming over the brow heard a horrible noise and the car stalls. Pulled over and had a look and the grooved altenator belt was in 1000 shreds. The car is being towed to a garage to be inspected tommorrow.
Does anyone have any experience and would know where to look first for the cause..

Without more information, I guess the conclusion has to be wear & tear. My air-conditioner man pointed out that the polybelt in my VR6 was showing signs of wear; my mechanic changed it at the next service. When was your car last serviced? These things are on the service schedule for regular checks.

It appears that the belt tensioner pulley has seized. Don'n know why the blue smoke.

>Don'n know why the blue smoke
That was the belt burning as it went over the seized pulley. Good job it didn't break as they have a habit of going into the timing cover and ripping the cambelt off. Big ouch.
