1987 VW Golf Heater Problem - actonblue
The heater on my golf is only blowing out lukewarm air even when turned up full.
The heater matrix was changed under a VW recall about 3 years ago.
I have recently discovered a tiny leak in the radiator and there is a a tiny leak in the hot water feed hose to the matrix. I am about to replace both of these.

Some people have said that the matrix is blocked and needs flushing is this easy to do?

Others have said that there is a valve that allows hot water into the matrix and this might have stuck.

Can anyone offer any explanation as to why the heater should be blowing lukewarm air?

Thanks.

Colin

It may be the feed pipe to matrix is drawing in air as the system cools down. This causes an air lock. even a partial air lock will cause it in the matrix. As you mentioned replacing both rad/pipe to matrix. May sort problem out?

Thanks.

I am waiting for the rubber gromits that the bottom of the rad sits on before it is attached to the body. It was the lack of these that caused the rad to leak after 12months you live and learn.

I will let you know how it goes .

I had similar problem with an '88 Mk2, eventually threw out the two valves on the engine side of the bulkhead on the flow and return to the matrix. Heater now works perfectly!!
I would exhaust all other possibilities first, as this may eventually cause matrix to blow through excessive pressure. I'll wait and see on that one!

I'll let you know when I have changed the rad and the hose.
I am waiting for 2 washers to mount the rad on. I did not have them when I changed the rad last year and subsequently cracked it.

If the above does not cure it I will ask you how to remove the valves.

german and Swedish showed me a modification valve that you can fit but they did not know where it goes in the matrix set up.

Thanks.

Dynamic Dave.

I am just hoping that the rad weld that I used in the original rad has not come back to block up the matrix.
I had the recall done but I have not seen this valve that other posters have been talking about. Is it in the bulkhead or in the engine bay? I am beginning to suspect that they replaced the matrix but did not fit the valve which I believe is the important part.

What does this valve look like can anyone point me to an illustration.

Thanks.

Radweld only blocks point of leak.Valve that operates hot/cold valve will be mounted between bulkhead and engine block/cylinder head. If you look at (under the bonnet)pipes that connect from engine to bulkhead you will see any difference made if valve`s have been changed. I cant Illustrate but bear in mind any valve fitted to or after correction will be noticeable.

No it is just the hoses. So I suspect that the recall was not carried out properly!!! Which could lead to the matrix going again??

Should I contact VW and ask what I should have had done?

Cheers.

My car had the recall new matrix and hose valves fitted. The VW garage did such a bad job refitting the hoses and additional valves (kinked, rubbing etc) that I removed the valves and went back to the old setup. I have had not problems since.
