M40/A43 overturned lorries - Stargazer {P}
Living not a million miles away and using these roads on a reasonably frequent basis I tend to notice when I get a traffic alert covering this junction. This nearly always involves
(3 last week) an overturned lorry.

I belive this junction was remodelled as part of the A43 upgrade, certainly there were still roadworks there a couple of years ago. Have they simply stuffed up the camber of the exit ramps and roundabouts?

I was on the M40 last week and heard a traffic announcement of an overturned lorry at Junction 10, with an expected time of removal at 10pm.

We are going north at about 8:30pm at were near J8. So expecting heavy jams I checked the map, but SWMBO decided to stay on the m'way; a good thing too. We did not see any evidence of the incident at all. What is going on?

This is a well-known stupid junction, despite the supposed "upgrade" roadworks recently.

Absolutely. At the top roundabout even my Landcruiser struggles to keep all its wheels on the ground at anything over a walking space.

The camber is wrong, the curves too tight, and too many curves. Coming north (west) on the M40 one comes up the slip road to a roundabout. You need to turn right at this roundabout but the road surface drops way as it turns ensuring that if you aren't going slowly, then you're probably also going straight on.

The over the bridge to turn left at the next roundabout, where not only does the road surface drop again as you go around the curve of the roundabout, it then rises as you hit the exit curve and then immediately drops again ensuring that you've gone completely light just when you didn't want.

Its an absolute nightmare and tha's without considering the logic (HAH!) of the layout even if the curves and cambers were sensible.

Mark and the lorry drivers here will like this one.

Saw this on my way back from yahooing down the old A43, you know what I'm saying.

The first roundabout Mark mentions turns sharply as does the second. Any big stuff needs more than one lane and this time there was a huge car transporter than plainly need the whole of the two lanes for both roundabouts. So everyone backs off and he negotiates the first one. The he starts to negotiate the second one and a gap appears. A brand new black Mercedes SL500 shoots forward in to the gap but has to stop as the front of the transporter turns in. The driver of the transporter can not see this guy so continues the turn starting to crush the Mercedes. The guy in the Mercedes is hooting and gesturing and the metal grinding noises are getting louder until the transport driver stops but by now the Merc is well wedged in and about 2/3 the width it was and the roundabout is pretty much fully blocked. I whipped it up the outside on the bike and left them to it.

Hope the Merc driver had to carry the can for it...

That's hilarious.
For some people the only way to learn is a practical lesson.

The Hilux is noted for its instability. Is the Landcruiser in fact the same?

I wouldn't say that either were particularly unstable, I've had both and never had any issue with either.

Having said that, you do see people who think they are driving saloon cars get into all sorts of trouble with them.

Having had the hi-lux, 4-runner, landcruiser colorado, amazon and the original, nissan thngy (not x-trail), cherokee and a few others. I've found them all pretty good. The one exception was a hi-lux I used a lot in the mountains which had long travel suspension and big-ass wheels and that was a nightmare anywhere near tarmac, never mind on corners or roundabouts.

You just need to bear in mind that they are not cars and need to be driven differently.

I've only used this M40/A43 junction a few times during the last few years. First it was a bad junction. Then there were roadworks and delays in the name of improvement. Then there was the finished new junction - a bad junction. Back to square one!

Sorry to bring up a very old thread:

In todays news, they are about to spend £60,000 improving warning signs on Junction 10 to try and prevent
articulated HGVs overturning.

Better late than never!
