March 2004
My Dad has a 2002 corsa 1.2 16v comfort, covered just 3500 miles. He has broken down twice in the last couple of weeks with intermittent electrical failure. Driving along normally. he hears a clicky, arcing sort of sound and everything goes dead on the dash and engine dies, though the hazard flashers still work.
The car starts normally after a few minutes. The dealer had a good look after the first breakdown but didn't find anything wrong, and replaced the ignition switch connector just in case. But it broke down again today!
Has anyone got any knowledge of this or any ideas please?

Is undertaking against the law.
I've read sometime ago that it was ok to do so, unless you cause an accident by the manouver. Then it would dangerous driving.
Then another says, its against the law full stop, whether you or not you caused an accident.
So which is it?? Read more
Motorwayman,
"So go to florida if you want to pass everyone you see!!"
I've taken your advice and am now in Florida!! Actually I am in the USA - mainly Florida - for several months each year.
Not certain where you were but most of the Freeways in Florida have a 70mph limit. Also if you get caught 'overtaking on the inside at 100mph plus' you will get the book thrown at you - and I mean jail(at least overnight) is a very real possibility.

My electric windows are not working very smoothly and judder over the last fraction of the range prior to shutting.
The newly acquired S/H car has been valeted prior to collection and I suspect some of the sticky cleaner stuff that some dealers insist on using is the cause. I think it is on/in the window seals.
On an old thread the advice seems to be that silicone in some form will make the windows operate more easily.I am looking for some dry silicone as used for curtain track.
Can anyone advise what I should use to clean the seals before applying silicone or is this unnecessary?
What is the best stuff to get the same cleaner off at least the steering wheel, gear lever, door handles? I suspect it has some form of silicone in it as my fingers feel slippery.
A small cosolation, at least it has no obvious smell. Read more
Don't use thinners on your steering wheel or gear knob if
they are leather - you may bring the 'paint' off. i
use 151 Instant Valet - it's cheap and good,
Plastic wheel and gear knob so that simplifies things.
You had me worried as the only 151 I know is 151 per cent Overproof RUM that is so strong it is banned on flights and I think it would also take 'paint off'.
I have tried soapy water but need lots of effort.
Halfords also sell a special spray for use on rubber seals
etc.
I now have a can of Holts Rubber and Nylon Lubicant which comes with a WD40 type tube to get into tiny spaces
Clean out the channels carefully with a mild glass
cleaner or detergent and then rinse well.
Try to get the edge of your cloth into the
seals to clean the glass too.
As soon as the car dries out I will attach it and report back.
thanks all.

renault are awful cars.
3 lads who have clios, all nothing but faults.
yet 2 of them will by them again, apparently they have street credit?
new espace is full of problems and massive waiting times for parts. So bad the lease company repalced it with a sedona rather than leaving us waiting for months.
Next time your out and about have a look out for G, H, or J reg Vauxhall Cavaliers, virtually (but not all) every single one of them appears to be white!!
I can't offer any explanation for this maybe you could order any colour you liked as long as it was white, it could have been a way at emulating Ford with the model T only available in black.
any ideas anyone?? answers on a postcard please. Read more
Hahahahahaha. Remember the Cavalier/Roundhead ads?
Is it possible to say what proportion of the average insurance premium relates to the car's value and if so, how much roughly is it? What are the the most important variables in the equation used to calculate our premiums? I'd expect age/ experience/claims record to be at the top of the list. Read more
Interesting point there and perhaps the vehicle does count for more than I assumed especially if it's a commercial.
Why do they seem to have such a downer on vans, whether for private or commercial - the latter if you can get insurance at all.
Accidents I have seen don't seem to include large numbers of vans, quite the reverse.
Hi,
Heater matrix on my car has blown, filling the car with steam when the fan is turned on. This has been made worse by the garage who confirmed it, after they pressure tested the cooling system and made the hole bigger!!
Does anyone know how difficult it is to replace one of these, and is it possible for an amateur to do - Haynes manual makes it sound 'relativly' simple - the garage is quoting £150+ just for labour.
Also how much is the part itself gonna set me back (i got a Ford spares near me but they close early fri - typical!!)
I appreciate the cooling system needs to be drained, but its high time for that anyway!
Thanks for any advice

I recently bought 100 for £20.
Is it worth paying extra for branded CDRs or are the cheap ones just as good? Read more
There is a web site called, I think, donateapc.org.uk which puts people like yourself (with a PC that is still servicable but not needed) in touch with charities who need them.
I have recent 175/65/14 tyres on original steel wheels fitted at the moment on my 306.
I was looking at some used alloys recently that were 6" wide by 14" diameter. Would it be possible to mount my existing good tyres on these wheels?
Is there anywhere that recommends rim width/tyre width combinations?
I would probably replace them with 185/60/14 tyres when they need it, I was just hoping to get all the life out of my current tyres.
Has anyone any experience of using 18mm spacers to mount Ford fit alloys to Peugeots? The centre bore of the ford wheel is smaller than peugeot, but this wouldn't matter since the spacer pushes the wheel out so the centre won't contact. Read more
You could but they will not only look a bit silly but could cause rapid deflation under heavy cornering compliance of the tyre wall could be exceeded and pull the tyre off the bead. Add to that the tyre is not wide enough to protude further than the rim thus leaving you prone to kerbing the alloys then the answer is no. 185 60's are the minimum for a 6J allow I think. I'm looking for a nice new shiny socket set (last one having been nicked with the car...) of decent quality, in a tidy box, metric only (I'm not planning ever to run a P6). Probably with a range of screwdriver/allen key/star ends as well.
I don't want (need) a truly properly seriously professional set costing hundreds.
What do you recommend - and indeed - where from?
I did have a Halfords 'professional' set before which I'd been given, but all those imperial sockets are just a waste of space & money. Read more
I got one of these some time ago (probably slightly different now). Lifetine warranty - I've had no need for it yet. Ask in one of the shops when their next 'vat free day' is and save a few quid as well.

I've heard this fault is caused by earthing problems.I believe new earths need to be fitted between battery negative and engine block and engine ECU.Suggest ask your dealer about this.
