"No,they are not that bad, they are much worse. How bad can it get,a Very Complicated Renault"
Spoken from knowledge? Nah thought not.
They are no more complicated than any other modern Renault. Its actually a nice comfortable car to travel in tho not exciting to drive. Its a concept that did not exactly set the world on fire, in fact no one bought them. Hence dealers cant give them away. Its a lot of car for the money.
|
Not spoken with any knowledge of the Vel Satis, but it's a Renault, therefore, in my book its a shed.Even the French and the Belgians will not buy it,so what chance have Renault UK got of even trying to 'give' them away?
Can you imagine a 'user chooser'in a Vel Satis when he could be driving the usual Silver German cars. No, neither can i.

I only have very limited experience of them but I wouldn't say they're bad, as such.. just odd :)
I was given a ride in one a while back, and was quite impressed with the 'padded armchair' feel at speed (which was vaguely reminiscent of the Citroen XM), but this vanished rapidly the moment we hit a less-than-even country road whereupon it felt as if the suspension was bottoming out with every bump. Quite disturbing as a passenger, but I can't say what it feels like as a driver.
The looks are also bizarre, but again, this is a universe where the Aston Martin Lagonda is considered a classic so I don't think that'll harm it much ;) It;s not ugly - it just has very, erm, selective appeal...
TBH I can't ever see it becoming a classic because it just isn't interesting enough, but I applaud Renault for trying something different with it.. even if launching an expensive oddball at the image-obsessed executive market maybe wasnt't the cleverest thing to do :)

I thought the concept was interesting and had one of the prestige manufacturers(Merc/BMW etc) produced that type of vehicle, instead of Renault, it might have become the luxury barge for the well heeled. At least the mini-skirted celebs could exit it gracefully; but the tabloids wouldn't like that. Come to think of it neither would the mini-skirted celebs - they need the 'exposure'.

Hi Bobby
Just out of curiosity where did you see this deal?
I am getting a bit bored with my 2001 TDI Passat Estate and having seen a few of these whilst in Paris and might be interested if I can get a good PX. I know the CO2 figures are not that brilliant but at those prices it could well be worth a look.
Other than that can someone talk me out of pursuing this further the CBC breakdown is a bit sketchy on this particular model.
In reality am I running the risk of opening my wallet to my local Renault dealer for the rest of my natural and beyond?
as always

Mark, first one was Reg Vardy in Glasgow, the second Arnold Clark in Glasgow.
Where are you?
|
Thanks Bobby
I am in North Cheshire and both these dealers have outlets not 10 miles from here.
Strangely enough I have used the Arnold Clark in Port Glasgow to have my Passat serviced when I was up there on business and a very good job they did too.
I will go on the web and have a look, I have a feeling we will be visiting one of these soon, does any one know if the 2.2/3.0 are belt or chain or of any issues with these engines like the failing crankshaft thrust washers on Espace diesels?

Thanks Bobby
I was searching the web whilst you posted. There are some Vel Satis listed but the offers are different it might be a North of the Border only offer.
I did however find the arnoldsucks.com website, Oh dear looks like I will have to cross Arnold off the list.
I will keep looking and thanks.

Mark, suppose it depends on experience. I have bought 2 cars from AC in Bishopbriggs Glasgow, recommended another 5 people to them who all bought cars and not a single problem.
Re that website, a lot of the problems seem "strange" and they have letters of complaints right up to 21 April 2004.
Now where I live it is only 13 March!
Yes, AC normally only give 1 month warranty but you can obviously buy more, but you would be buying within manufacturers warranty.
FWIW, I would have no hesitation in recommending them and that is where I will buy my next car. If you want , I can advise you of salesman's name in AC Renault Glasgow who I always deal with.

Since this car has had such a short production run, I would let it depreciate a lot further before leaping in.

|
If you fancy doing different, why not go the whole hog and buy an Avantime...
IT could be an investment!
|
A much rarer vehicle I think,
Its just that I have had the Passat for nearly 3 years and have a matured Tessa burning a hole in my pocket and the thought of something that is about a year old and has lost 50% of its money (like the 3.0l mentioned above) caught my imagination. I can't find the deal on the web at the prices mentioned it must be a Scottish press thing.
I could only find one Avantine and that was a petrol which rules it out for me.
Don't worry I will have my medication soon and the whole thing will pass.

Mark unfortunately I have now chucked out Friday's Daily Record so can't give you many more details for the first deal other than it was Reg Vardy. Not sure which branch though, if you phone one of their Glasgow Renault branches you could take it from there.

Hi Bobby
Many thanks for your help on this. Mrs Mark has asked me to find her a picture of a Vel Satis, I fear this will go no further.

Hi Bobby Many thanks for your help on this. Mrs Mark has asked me to find her a picture of a Vel Satis, I fear this will go no further.
Probably kicked that idea in to touch then, its not the pretiest thing on the road.

Don't touch it.
I owned a new Renault 25 once. Total dog: two auto gearboxes and one new engine in 3 years.
My wife's friend has a 2001 Espace diesel: Needed new manual gearbox, injection pump, rear cat and wheel bearings. Customer service and dealer are pants, too.
Renault Vel Satis? Will be worth £3K in 3 years.
Renault: The modern day equivalent of an Alfasud.
|
Mrs Mark looked at the photos and it has not quite been kicked into touch. I think she preferred the Avantine however.
Thinking on a more rational note if it can lose 50% of its value in one year and 5000 miles (thats the sort of mileage shown on the websites above) then what will it lose next year, gulp.
Time for the sleeveless jacket and a few days in a quiet room methinks.

renault are awful cars.
3 lads who have clios, all nothing but faults.
yet 2 of them will by them again, apparently they have street credit?
new espace is full of problems and massive waiting times for parts. So bad the lease company repalced it with a sedona rather than leaving us waiting for months.
