March 2004
Would like to pick the brains of any of you who have travelled to the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff.
My home town team, Southend, have reached the final of the LDV Trophy, to be played on 21st March and I intend to be there, along with a fair number of other Southenders.
Now the question is, how do I get there?
I've got accomodation booked at my brother's company facility for the Saturday night in Caerphilly and Plan A was to catch the train into Cardiff on the Sunday for the match as we're told that parking in the city centre is a nightmare on match days. Unfortunately there appears to be only one train in each direction on a Sunday, and it's after the match!
Plan B was to drive to the special park and ride facility just off the M4 but I have been told that the wait after the game could be up to two hours to get a bus back to the car park.
Plan C is to drive down to Newport and get a train in from there, every 10/15 mins and back after the game.
So, has anyone been to the Stadium recently and any experience of any of the above, or, do any BR's hail from the area and have a better suggestion than any of the above?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Folks
I'm considering buying an old one as a project, with a view to keeping. They seem pretty cheap at the moment and I reckon they'll become collectable. Any major problem areas to look out for? Anybody out there running one or similar hard top GTi? Also, what engine is in the "Clipper" version, 1800 injection or carb? I can't remember.Grateful for any feedback

You're right, no power steering, but easy enough to manoeuvre, remember the current Golf is almost twice the weight of the Mk1! I think the original weight was 800kg ish - less than a Metro. The cabiolet will obviously be a bit more, but i don't know by how much.
Need some advice...
Has anyone ever driven a small engined automatic car such as a 1.3 or under?
Looking at the new 1.0 Charade, Sirion and the soon to be released 1.1 Picanto from Kia.
Are these cars unusable or are they simply slow? Could you get away with one from day to day if you don't go on the motorway?
Want to avoid bigger engines for the cheap insurance, road tax and mpg.
Cheers

This problem does not seem to bother the Japanese, they have auto's as small as 600 cc.
But, speaking from experience, only problem I found was that you had to switch off the air con to drag the car up a steep hill!!!.

Hi all
A couple of weeks ago i noticed a loud grinding/grating/quick knocking noise coming from my front n/s on my 2L 306 xsi 1994. The noise is only noticable when accelerating from standstill or in 2nd gear and pulling away sharpish.
There's no other noises when on full lock, turning corners gently or going over bumps in a straight line.
I've taken her to 2 garages, one said it was a lower arm suspension bush, and the other said they were fine but it might be the mountings instead?
The steering also does not seem as responsive anymore.
Any ideas? or any ways i can check things out myself?
thanx in advance Read more
Thanks for the replies guys, not 2 far from Oxon, so will ask Storm Autos to check the whole front suspension for me. I did prang a kerb last month, so could be any of your suggestions.
Cheers
I have a Scenic dci which has Michelin Primacy Pilate, 205/50/R16 speed rating H.
I now need 2 new front tyres and the cheapest I can find these ones for are £97 inc VAT from my local tyre firm who are usually substantially cheaper than the Nationals.
MyTyres wpuld work out at £86 inc fitting but this would involve waiting for tyres to be delivered and then travelling 10 miles to get them fitted at the MyTyres authorised dealer.
I will phone round for quotes, however, they have suggested other tyres to me, namely
BS Goodrich tyres which they say are made by Michelin. These would only come in a V speed rating but I have been assured that this would not be a problem as it is a higher rating. The BF also comes with a 3 year accidental damage replacement guarantee. It is £74.
Anyone any thoughts or better suggestions? Read more
Speed rating H is to 130.5 mph
Speed rating V is to 149.1 mph.
Yesterday I saw a van broken down, blocking a very busy road. The queues of traffic behind were stretching back to the horizon and everyone on the road was silently cursing the poor van driver. Of course, breaking down is sometimes down to bad luck, but the traffic queue behind could have been cured by using an Honest John Website Top Tip (made up name)
By putting the car in first (or reverse) gear, feet off the pedals and turning the ignition key you can 'drive' the car slowly out of the way on the starter motor. Don't hold the key on for more than 20 seconds or you'll overheat the starter motor but it's a great way for getting a car out of a danger spot.
What are your top tips for motoring?

p.s. the driveshaft CV joint had broken on the van so he didn't have any drive at all - it wouldn't have worked! Read more

Also doesn't work with Autoboxes! :-)

My Old Dads Fiesta Auto is stalling occassionally when it's idling and when he puts it in drive at the traffic lights.
Local Ford Agent put it on Diagnostic Tester and said; "Uneconomical Repair....New Gearbox Required.....£1600 to you"!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks RichardW, That was an interesting thread.
I wonder if there's a way to get Ford to help out on this.
If my father hadn't done such low mileage this fault would have become apparent much sooner.
P.S. It IS a 97 model,so it all points to what you wrote.
Thanks for the help, I'll give the Old Man the bad news.

Saw this new product, Autoglym Alloy Wheel Seal in a discarded Sunday Times motoring supplement on the bus this morning: www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2105-1026839,00.h...l Has anyone tried it? It would appear you spray it on. Is a good coat of car polish carefully polished off just as good on alloys and safer than spraying silicone near pads and brake discs? Not to mention the nightmare this would cause a bodyshop if the surrounding paint ever needed spraying. Read more
If you intend using this I would suggest removing wheels one at a time to save any problems like that.Autoglym in itself I have never had any problems with in fact would recommend to anyone.rarely have I found any thing stuck to body that would not easily rub off ie flie`s birds mess and the like.I even use the polish on the alloys and on door shuts seems to prevent doors sticking in severe cold.

I understand, ex essex boy meself.
