I have a scooter (majesty 125cc), and the only fault is that the lights are very weak. For town, they are fine but once outside town they really do a bad job.
My subsequent question is, what can I do to improve the lights? I have thought of adding extra lights, but I cannot see where I can put them and am anxious they may drain the battery.
What is on offer that will improve this?

A simple question for the experts amongst you - my 1998 406 clock display has lost its' lighting. Clock still works, so probably just the internal bulb.
Anyone ever taken a clock out of a 406? It's the one that is in the top of the dash,to the left of the main display. Just don't want to break it finding out how it is held in!
Ta in advance

I had to replace mine, found it easier to also buy the small replacement bulb holder as well. I think it was only £2-£3 in total
I'm about to buy a Z3 2.8 but have heard that certain models have Nickasil cylinder bores which are prone to wear. Obviously I'm anxious to avoid buying one of these but I'm a bit uncertain as to how to identify them. Can anyone help? Is it all pre 1998 cars that have these cylinder bores or just imported models?
All information gratefully received

Just phoned BMW GB. The Z3 2.8 was not affected.

Hello, There have been quite a few postings about the good value oli and filter changes provided by Nationa; Tyres, Kwik Fit etc. I have been using National Tyres for a little while. I believe they use Duckhams semi-synthetic oil, but my question is about the quality of the oil filters. They seem to use a make called Wicks, which I've not heard of. Are these filters of good quality (non-return valve etc.) or would I be better getting my oil changes done somewhere else where they use OE filters or similar? Read more
I've not heard of Wix filters until recently but I like what I hear about them anyway!

My Dad's looking for a newer car to replace his ageing Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6.
He's got around 10k to spend, and needs an automatic. He'd also like a diesel if possible, as nearly all his journeys are long motorway ones, and economy is important. It also needs to be capable of towing a 2 berth caravan.
It'll do around 15k miles a year and be kept for the next 10 years or so.
All ideas gratefully received!
Thanks,
Ian

A Citroen C5 estate would make an ideal tow car, a 2.2 HDI Auto would give excellent performance but a max towing weight of 1000kg, the 2.0 HDI auto will tow 1500kg. I have no idea why the more powerful car will tow less weight.
The self levelling suspension is ideal for a boot of clobber and the car has won awards for towing. See the Car-By-Car index.
My MB E320 CDI has developed a horrific brake squeal. Unless you are braking very softly the brakes will squeal.
The car is only just over a year old and has only covered 22,000 mls.
What causes this and what are the remedys? Read more
The brake pad will squeal as it oscillates within it's mounting at a very high frequency ..ie...juddering some 10,000 times a second.
The only way to stop this is by damping these oscillations....
Typically, this is done by the manufacturer fitting a soft shim to the back of the pad, or covering it contact point witha thick sticky grease, or applying a thin film of a flexible coating to the back of the pads.
Mercedes may have used brake grease which has sense washes/worn off. The only real cure is to refit the existing pads or replace them, ensuring they are fitted with adequate ant-squeal precautions.
Hi Guys,
Am considering having just a back box fitted to my corsa as have a pea shooter at present and can\'t afford full system.
some people have said that it is waste of time and money as will just need re-doing every five minutes?
Views please gentlemen.

Cheers chaps.
Will go for it...have got part numbers to check with Vauxhall first.
If you see a Green corsa with sparks flying off the back you know why!!!!! :-)
Noticed a small white disc in the window of the Air Cadet minibus that I sometimes drive the other day. None of the other squadron staff understand what 'priviledges', if any, it gives us.
It's a Transport Act 1985 Section 19 Permit Vehicle, with the title of Small Bus Disc.
Does this mean we can use bus lanes? Read more
Amanda, I apologise for jumping in but I'm desperate for some information regarding section !9.
Im a taxi driver and single 16 seater minibus operator, and our local Council has given contracts to a Community Transport Charity in their minibuses. Something I can't understand is how can they work without an Operators licence, using a Section 19, when they entered alongside us in tendering for contracts which they won. I Don't see how this is "non-profit making" ?...
Can anyone advise on the best pick up truck? I want something reliable but not too big. Read more
Not on your list, but I saw a lincoln navigator today, absolutely huge. It must have had 22inch wheels on! Footballers wives, no doubt.

Last week I went on a short break to Boston and the Cape cod area. I had pre-booked a 4wd vehicle from Hertz as the last time I went around this time of year we had about 3foot of snow.
When I went to collect the car I was offered an upgrade to a Lincoln Navigator. Having seen these giant beasts before I decided to go for it. www.lincoln.com/vehicles/interior.asp?sVehi=nav
This car is huge, very comfy, loads of gadgets, unbelievable THX sound system but the fuel economy shocked me. It has a 5.5ltr V8 that sounds glorious but the best I managed was 14mpg on a 150 mile stretch of road and 5-8mpg around town.
I have never worried about pollution/resources as such before but this started worrying me and when you consider the amount of cars in the U.S. with great big engines you begin to worry.
Is this worrying due to me getting old or should we all start to worry?

The US is very confused about its enviromental policy...
It's a scandal..vehicles like the Navigator are in the same category as light trucks so are not subject to fuel economy and emissions standards applied to cars - it's something like average for each marque's fleet of 20 mpg and 28 mpg for cars. This has not increased now for nearly twenty years in the US. There has been several attempts to increase this to nearer 40mpg but they all get voted out.
I think we should all be concerned by the waste of resources. Oil production can only be increased so much to feed the gas guzzlers and all the millions that are going to want to drive in the third world pretty soon.
We could also think about how we use cars here..despite the high fuel prices many people manage to drive big petrol engined cars that often cover 100k+ mileages in just a few years of driving.

I have a halogen bulb in my motorbike in place of the 45/40w standard, plus heated handlebars and a fog lamp. The alternator handles it no problem.
I do 2 x 40 miles per day.
However, on the scooter it is possible to run the battery down by doing short journeys with only standard equipment since there is not time to replace the drain from starting.
