I'm getting a loud popping sounds from my speakers when I turn the radio off, or if I turn the ignition off with the radio still on.
Any ideas?
Car is a Peugeot 106 1.4 diesel. Radio is a Goodmans radio cassette.
Had thought the popping sound was the engine, so a relief to discover it was the radio. Read more
Hi all,
My wife needs a new car, but her list of requirements are I believe impossible to match:
- 5 proper seats
- large enough for her artwork (ie rear seats must fold or must be an estate). Artwork is as large as 4"x3".
- ideally wants a softtop
- should be capable of towing a caravan.
I haven't seen any car that is a 5-seater convertible large enough to tow.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Mark

With a £30,000 budget you could always go for 2 cars, say an MX-5 for fun plus a hatchback / estate for the artwork. My wife's Honda Jazz is brilliant for seat folding, versatility and ease of driving though not very fast - but with something this size you have funds over for the extra running costs of 2 cars.

During the Staurday scuffle for the various bits of the Telegraph, I ended up with the Travel section by accident instead of the Motoring section. My escuse is that the bit that I could see had an advert for an Eastern 4x4 and there was visible part of the unmistakable pedestrian-munching grille of a Cadillac from the '70s. Oh, and some sandalled female feet.
The article, which was by Anne Robinson's daughter, outlined a trip she and her mother took in the USA in this Cadillac. It was described as a "1976 Eldorado Cadillac".
I don't understand why one would put the model name in front of the make when referring to a car. Or, are we all actually driving Megane Renaults, Mondeo Fords and Maestro British Leylands?

I always assumed that the transposition of the make and model was due to peoples ignorance. Most of these people also refer to the Regal and the Rialto as a Robin Reliant too.
As a lad I suffered the indignity of my Dad driving a Robin and am therefore very particular about getting it right.
Has anybody fitted a towbar to a Peugeot 406 saloon? Grateful for any advice. Thanks. Read more
Many thanks for the info Charles. I'll put some WD40 on the silencer and heat shield and let it soak in for a few days before I attempt the job. The electrics seem to be on the nearside - and Peugeot should be congratulated for putting in a spare wire for power to the 12S socket. I think it has its own fuse (F15 I think) through the ignition switch.

Hi All
Sorry if this is a little off-topic but I need some advice from seasoned motorists (!) with regard to insurance.
I'm a student so I'm looking for some sort of third party fire and theft insurance that will cover me for short period (e.g. a month or so) while I'm at home, but doesn't require an annual premium. Is there such a thing as short term motor insurance? I've exhaustively searched the net but haven't found anything as of yet... If anyone has any ideas of providers I'd be very grateful.
Car is a standard Nissan Micra by the way
Thanks in advance

Try CIS, they do one month policies at a cost of 10% of an annual premium.

My wifes Focus has just blown the rear window heater fuse and the dash light fuse both at the same time.
However having replaced both failed fuses and despite have checked all the other fuses I still cannot get the nearside dipped headlight to or light the rear number plate lights.(Side lights/parking and full beam are ok.)
This suggests a bulb/ relay problem but I can't understand why the rear number plate lights won't light which having checked are ok .
Before I rush off buying new bulbs/relays does anyone have any suggestions.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Re numberplate units. Mine and others have a problem with them turning into rain holders. Be careful when you have unclipped them as the connectors are very very flimsy, make poor connections and are different size connectors each end of the unit. I bought two replacement in Sep for £12.50 then had to cobble up the connectors.
Hi
Firstly a confession: I haven't washed my car for 3 months so I admit most of what follows falls largely into the 'self inflicted' category of problems.
1. The paintwork on my, metallic silver, Mazda has a kind of brown stain below the petrol cap - presumably this is from spilt petrol. Can any backroomers recommend any products that will clear this off? Washing with Auto Glym car shampoo hasn't worked.
2. I have chipped paintwork on the rear wheel arch and scuff marks on the rear bumper (which I think is plastic). The chip mark was caused by me scraping off what looked like a speck of rust or tar with my thumbnail - the paint came off with it.
I have a manufacturers touch-up stick which according to the instructions should not be used in temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius. I'm concerned that the chip will go rusty if I wait until summer. Does anyone have any suggestions for both the chip and the scuffed bumper? I've heard of firms like 'chips away' but wouldn't want to use one without a personal recommendation, so if anyone could recommend a good company in the Sheffield area I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance

Try a tar remover for the petrol stain - but re-polish the area afterwards as the tar remover will take everything off.
Hello.
I have a 2002 406 HDi 110, where reverse gear is next to first. There is a rough feel and noise when moving the gear lever from its rest position across the 1st/2nd plane.
Is this a matter of lubricating the gearlever assembly or something more sinister?

Could be your link rods, £ 28 for all 3. just popped on a ball on the linkage.

Hi,
In my seemingly endless search for a new car, I have narrowed the field to these two.
I am still not entirely drawn to one above the other, and would be interested to hear any views, comments or experiences, others have had with these two models.
I look forward to your comments ... Read more
New shape Corolla interior lookes too much like a cheap Japanese hi-fi ... although the Civic isn't miles better inside, either ...
I don't like the handling of the 5 door Civic, though - rolls alarmingly when you push it through a bend - the Corolla has better handling.
Engine wise the Honda has better real-world fuel consumption, although the gearing is similar - note the Toyota is a chain-cam, so no belt to replace.
And my Corolla 1.4 is now at 120k miles, in 3.5 years .....
Change the radio. Its a design fault (read cheap) Poor isolation of the output stage.
