Mad Maxy

Want - no need, it's an obsession - to buy a Porsche.

996 Carrera: would love one, but much too expensive. Certainly in SWMBO's books.

993 Carrera: would love one, but too expensive. Anyway, the latest are 1997 R.

Boxster: would like one; expensive but could be affordable; only two seats though.

964 Carrera: oldest of the lot but more affordable. SWMBO could be swayed.

Any of you backroomers know anything about or have actual experiences of owning Porsches? What's it like? What are the good and the bad things? Any tips?

BTW, I read Peter Robinson's account of his 25,000 miles in his long-term Carrera 2: 'best car in the world', or words to that effect.

(There vould be a risk of elitist and similar jibes - are Porsche drivers like BM drivers? - but I'll take it.) Read more

Er, as I was posting that, I realised I meant to ask: HJ, are you suggesting 'don't go there' or 'buy carefully (FSH, FPSH?, independent expert check, etc)'?

I have a V reg Rover 420IS,first registered Sep 99 on a pre reg by the dealer, bought by the first owner in Jan 2000,then by me from the same dealer in July 2001with 14000 miles on the clock. It has now done 46000 miles and I have been extremely pleased with its performance to date (it has a FSH).
However,as a regular reader of the column,I am aware that there are certain cars with histories of when faults may occur-what can I expect and, roughly, when for this car (eg timing belts)-not sure which series engine it has-and what is its current worth?

Just followed a new gritting lorry.
It had the usual large hopper design but had white not pink residue around the bodywork. I then noticed large translucent tanks along its flanks under the sides of the hopper with lots of fluid slopping around in them.

Is this the latest super melting brew?
Anyone have more details on what it is, how it works and the pros and cons against the familiar pink blasting rock salt type stuff? Read more

Cannot be certain but gather water`ed down salt during spreading covers a larger area.Ie years ago 3.5 ozs used to cover 1 square metre which is not a lot of salt per sq/metre
if water is applied during spread of salt would increase by 3times the amount needed.I gather that is how it`s done but then only a person that drives a gritter can confirm.interesting to hear of replie`s

On V req Focus headlamps there is a rubber sealing stip along the whole of top edge where the bonnet meets it.
The strip is rubber bonded to a plastic strip.
Held onto the lamp with spire clips.

The rubber is parting from the plastic so off I went to get a replacement. It does not appear in the computer but my always helpful Mercury Motors of Twickenham (I am just a lifetime happy customer) inform me after physically checking that it only comes with the headlamp.

I can attempt to tape it up in some form but:
when I asked for same spare at my nearest dealer I was met with surprise because 15 mins earlier there had been the same request.
It would appear that perhaps there is a problem with this part and Ford should make it available as a spare.

Anyone else experienced this?
It may be worth having a look as it is not immediately obvious. Read more

An update of sorts.

I called the Ford Customer help line.
\"Yes we get lots of requests for this part\" was the reply.
The outcome was - \"It is part of the headlamp so the only solution is to buy a whole new headlamp\". Blooming wonderful.
I guess my last chance is to get one from a crash repair yard and that just leaves me to source the right sized spire clips.

I suggested I write to a big cheese and complain. \"Waste of time. They will only pass it on to us and we too are stuffed\"

Ford Customer help line. The individual bod was sympathetic but what a shambles of an organisation.

An obviously faulty part but it is out of the warranty period so tough!

Ive just been to give Gordy another £160, whereupon I had a friendly argument with the post office staff! I filled in the tax renewal from, and took it, along with a VALID insurance certificate,my current one, as stated on the form. (My insurance is up for renewal at the same time as the tax). The lady said she couldnt accept it because it did not cover the taxation period. I stated that my next insurance policy was not valid as of today! No joy.
The point is, I might not have sorted out my next policy yet. You can do it online and get instant cover the night before if you so wish, but with these new rules of an £80 fine on the day your current tax disc runs out, you will get fined!
So you either have your next years policy ready, with the certificate/cover note at your disposal or you pay £80 fine! Read more

After having our car engine on our carlton practically rebuilt, new head gasket cam shaft etc. We came to start the car and got this awful buzzing from the fuel relay, we got a new one from a scrap yard and came to start it again it turned over and then cut out (not surprising it had been stood for 4 weeks) any way after charging the battery we then came to start it and it was as though the battery was almost flat, despite having boooster cables on it. Could this be a faulty starter motor? Also what is the best way to get a car going after an engine rebuild will it need an initial \"bosst\" of power to get it going as there is no oil in the tappets Read more

Aprilia

Yes. I was going to say check the earth strap (battery to body AND the body to engine strap - which may have been removed durning the rebuild work).

I need a little runabout to get me buy for 2 months before my new car is delivered. I lady at work has a 1998 SEAT Arosa 1.4 for sale for £1000. The only problem is that although it has 12 months TAX/MOT and is one owner, it has 107k miles and is Left hand drive.

If I was to offer £900, am I likely to get my money back after 2 months?

When you have used the car - post an advert in the classifieds here that it is for sale - someone (maybe me depending on circumstances) might be interested.
