Just had an e.mail from 'drivethedeal' informing me of price cuts on this car. Surprised by this I checked the website and obtained new quotes for both models, neither of which showed a discount over MRP. I suppose this could be a mistake but, if not, why are prices on this car aleady being reduced? I was under the impression that there was a waiting list for the RX8. Read more

There are a few Jap Imports coming in now.
Southampton docks have a few 350Z's on 02 plates with Auto gearboxs. All are fully specced up. I've seen 2 RX8's.
I would personally go for the 350Z (especially in Black). You cant beat a V6 engine....

My mums Fiesta had a flat battery and I recharged it. The radio has since lost its code. She has mislaid the handbook and the supplying dealer is long gone. I read somehere that there is a web site which can give you the code if you have the radio serial number - for a fee. The car is a 1996 Fiesta Quartz. Thanks Read more

Sign on to this forum and with your Ser.No and Model of the Radio, you could get the code for nothing.

This morning whilst checking fluid levels in my pug 106 I discover that the radiator coolant reservoir was filled with thick brown sludge, all traces of coolant gone.

Oil level had also dropped to virtually nil.

Topped up oil and scraped out as much of the sludge as i could.

What cuased this to happen, any ideas?
I\'m fearing a problem with the head gasket, but hoping its not too serious.

I plan to flush out radiator to see if this cures the problem.

Coolant levels last checked mid-december, all was fine then and have done about 600-1000 miles since. Car could do with a service aswell Read more

Agree with radiator replacement as these pug rads seem to use any excuse to strt leaking. I have been using a Forte product called Bio Cooling system flush which really does an excellent job of breaking down the oil residues in the cooling system and holding them in suspension to flush out. Best of all it is safe to plastics.

My daughter is about to take her practical driving test in a Nissan Micra 1996 1000cc 1996 5 door model shortly which we purchase for her 21st.Her driving instructor pointed out the rear licence plate lights were out and they need to be sorted for her test.Today I have replaced both bulbs and checked the fuses but they still refuse to work.Any ideas anyone as I am struggling what to do next,

Peter, yes the lights are in the tailgate. Thanks for your suggestion as it seems to be the most likely reason for the fault.I think what the instuctor said to my daughter is not likely to be a problem but it does not help her with another think to worry about,
thanks,

Seriously considering buying one. Have read HJs comments on 'Road Test' but just wondering if anyone out there owns one and if so, what their thoughts were? 'XS model' seems a lot of spec. for the money. Thanks. Read more

I've literally just ordered one but just the entry-level one. Very impressed on the test drive. Was about to buy a Hyundai Terracon but my wife thought it was just too ugly and the Kia dealership is just next door. The vehicle will be working hard for its living so hope it does the trick.

Got talked into changing pads and discs for a friend today. Afterwards he mentioned his intention to change the gearbox oil (still listed by FIAT as maintenance item). He intended adding Molyslip, but I suggested instead using sythetic gearoil. Then he threw me by insisting the thing had a limited slip diff, which I find hard to believe on such a cheap machine. The implication was that it was a non-standard extra, added by a previous owner. Can anyone confirm if this could be correct. Certainly vital to use the correct oil if one is fitted!!

Also, any useful webpage for deciding what oil to use

Thank you

Does anybody have any experience of replacing these on a 96 Accord (or Rover 600)? I went out today and brought some new front discs as the old ones were warped. I expected fitting them would be fairly straight forward, only to have since found out that it looks like it going to be a world of hurt.

The disc is situated behind the hub. From the info I have gleened from the(rather sketchy) manual I have and the internet, it seems like the whole front knuckle/hub needs dismantling just to get to the discs. This can't be right, surely?

any help or advice would be gratefully received. Read more

Yes, the steering judders while braking at various degrees depending on speed. It's at it's worst at high speed. I know that are other factors that could cause this too so I had the car up on blocks in gear with the tyres off and visually, as the discs spun you could see where they had warped. Not sure if that's the most scientific test available however!

Thanks again DL for your time. If nothing else, it'll teach me to plan jobs before I go ploughing into them.

Although there have been other threads on this subject, the front runners change their prices for this sort of cover fairly regularly so thought I would air the question again.

I need to obtain cover (more for peace of mind) for 10 days motoring in France in February (the annual ski dash to the Alps). My usual breakdon cover is with Britannia, but the European cover through them is a right hotchpotch, being underwritten by an insurance company and not really filling me with confidence.

Any suggestions? My normal cover isn't up for renewal until May so I really need a stand-alone policy for now. Read more

No relatives working for Rover (thank goodness??) Used to work for an automotive supplier - was horrified at the calibre of some senior Rover staff in the late 1990's, I could have done better than them! No wonder BMW had trouble, leaving Rover to get on with it themselves. If BMW had gone through the Rover management and replaced some of them with their own BMW bods, things might have been so different :-((

Question Pinking Primera
mad_scientist

2001 Primera Sport-Plus 2.0i with CVT-M6 automatic gearbox. Only 22,000 miles.

Has been pinking for months and the main-dealer has been unable to sort the problem out.

The pinking only happens under very specific conditions....

Generally it is when gently cruising at between 30-40mph, with light or no throttle, when the gearbox will select a very high gear, revs drop to about 1200rpm.

As soon as you apply even very gentle throttle the engine will pink hard for a period of about 5seconds until the revs have risen to over 1500rpm.

Sometimes the engine feels as if it is labouring, and the gearbox isn't wanting to change down, and that it has probably selected too high a gear in the first place.

If you use the tiptronic over-ride, and select top-gear, the car can be made to pink, if the throttle is floored to the max, but it is more difficult to induce under these same driving conditions.

I had one of the earlier primera automatics (a normal 4 speed auto) b4 this car, and it was a much better vehicle.

The CVT auto is dreadful - do not buy one - sluggish and unresponsive and the car does not inspire confidence when driving in heavy traffic, as the acceleration 0-30mph is so poor, and if one has to pull out of a side-road onto a busy road I am always nervous that the car will not pull away quick enough. - is this also a characteristic of this car, or is there a problem with mine and is it connected with the pinking ???

The car is also very sluggish on hills, one almost always has to select the manual over-ride and change down a gear tomaintain momentum.

The Nissan main dealer say according to the diagnostic computer all the sensors are working OK, and they have retarded the ignition, and fitted colder plugs.

They have also re-adjusted throttle linkages, and reset the gearbox tiptronic paddles (why this should affect it I don't know)

I am not quite sure why my primera should need its ignition retarding and colder plugs fitting, when every other primera manages to drive OK without them - I think this is treating the symptom rather than the problem.

Despite these modifications the vehicle is still pinking. The pinking was worse during the hot summer, but it is still doing it in the winter.

Nissan Technical support have said to the dealer they don't know what the prolem is, and would love to know when the dealer finds out !

The dealer wants to take off the cylinder head as he thinks there might be a "hot-spot" somewhere causing the pre-ignition.

I am resisting this so far, as I know that they never go back on as well as when the engine was new, as there is always some distortion, and you can end up with constant head problems in the future if it is not done absolutely perfectly.

I would also have thought a hot-spot would make the car pink under a wider range of conditions, not under the very specific ones it seems pink under.

The next suggestion is to make some adjustments to the automatic gearbox, which I am hoping is getting closer to the cause of the problems.

Any suggestions anyone ???

The car is under warrnty until April04, but it has taken more than 6 months to get no-where and I am concerned it may go out of warranty before a solution is found, and I could end up with some verybig diagnostic bills !

Thanks in advance !!!

have owned two primeras 99 1.8 and a new shape 2002 1.8 would never again own them as they are so unreliable the first went
back to the supplying dealer 18 times for all kinds of simple probs. thought this would have improved when the new shape came however had to return the vehicle after 2 weeks and change to current tino which is far more reliable and economic. however as far as the pinking is concerned have had probs in 2 vehs previously one with a vectra and the other the worst veh ever made, early omegas. problem was overcome with changing the petrol believe or not. cheap supermarket fuel was the problem and also after using it the fuel jets in the engine were either replaced or cleaned out.

hope this helps sorry for knocking the primera
