Just bought one of these devices owing to frequent encounters with cameras.Excellent at highlighting local blackspots, North Derbyshire, where I have indeed seen several accidents in recent times.Local fixed cameras all highlighted as well.
I'll want to make the installation neater in due course. Car is a 2001 Passat- anyone had experience of concealing a power cable?
I'm hoping that there is a gap between the dashboard and windscreen to feed the cable to the steering column area where hopefuly there will be a suitable power source. Read more
How do you wind the windows down on a motorbike.
Maybe Harleys have windows now...
Hi,
I'm new to the concept of rust on my car, but sadly have a small patch to deal with. It's on the front outside edge of a rear arch and has been caused by debrix from the front wheels travelling down the side of car until it hits something that stands proud. Anyhow the paint chipped of slightly previously, and despite cleaning then touching up, it seems the rust has spread under the paint and now the affected area is about 4inch x 1inch.
The car has a standard primer, base, lacquer paint system, so presumably a standard off the shelf matched spray can will do the job. The question I need answered is what's the best way to cut the existing paint back and how should the rusted area be treated (mild surface rust) to mimimise the chances of the rust re-occuring.
All help appreciated.
Thanks,

Most peoples vehicles will be WAY too shiny for this trick, but it might be useful to someone.
Unusually for a Taiwan car, my (1986) Daihatsu Skywing has almost Scottish levels of corrosion, probably because a previous owner was a surfer...
just had gearbox professionally overhauled & new ecu fitted handbrake warning light now glows slightly & gearbox does not seem to know which gear it should be in.
This is an intermittent problem any ideas? Read more
Doesn't seem like a professional overhaul to me.
Handbrake warning light could just be badly adjusted switch, or is it low brake fluid that also triggers the same warning light.
Which auto box to you have (how many forward gears)? There have been some strange failures on the latest type= - see
www.fordgalaxy.org.uk for further info.
Another Scenic question...this one belongs to a colleague.
It's a 1998 1.6 Auto - not the best combo, I know - and the last couple of months it has been getting very difficult to start when the engine is warm after a long-ish run.
Cold starts are fine but when warm it just turns over and either takes 5 mins to catch or won't start at all. If it does start the idling is normal (no lumpiness).
It does mostly short runs with a 70 mile run once or twice a week. It was serviced independently in November which made a slight improvement - I'm trying to find out what was changed/adjusted.
Any pointers to look at that might be causing this?
Thanks

Insufficient fuel enrichment? May be an ECU or temperature sensor fault.
When the changes to emission based taxation were introduced in 2002 I opted out of the company car scheme and switched the remainder of the lease on my company car to my name having an increase in salary etc. I have Mar 2001 BMW 525 series touring auto that is soon to be returned to the leasing company. They are asking 15,100 for me to buy it with 72K on the clock. The alternative is to maybe buy a new or ex demo V70 or go for a Merc E320cdi on lease.
As it is now "my money" I'm spending should I keep the BMW, buy a Volvo or lease a Merc. I guess I'm looking to save money for myself. Read more
Agreed!
If you like the BMW & it's done it's job well, not let you down,I'd stick with it.
It's still quite new, not high miles & has lost it's big lump of money, within the depreciation curve.(see other post on here about that one)
& to get an REAL valuation, run it round a few dealers, see what they'd pay cash for it, or as a swap in for the others you fancy. No need for them to know it's not yours to sell! Then see what the deal would be WITHOUT a part exchange - you'll know if they've made an over allowance on yours, or not.

we want to purchase around 8 - 9 small saloons this year, however the market seems terribly limited. i recall 5 years ago being able to choose from polo, cordoba, hyundai, etc
.
whats happened to the choice?
wat is the choice?
are their any new models likely to wait on for?

There are lots of small saloons around but they don't seem
to be sold in the UK. Obvious examples include the Toyota Yaris in Japan (tinyurl.com/2te56 ).
Perhaps you could approach one of the specialist importers of Japanese cars and they could source a batch of native RHD cars.
You might even start a trend.
Morning all,
My second post in quick succession as it just suddenly occurred to me.
I changed my blower motor resistor pack in my 97 Astra TD van a while back, did the pollen filter at the same time because that needed to be removed anyway. To get at all that I had to remove the windscreen cowl panel. When I came to put it back on I couldn't get it to lie completely flat against the windscreen - felt like something was in the way but it wasn't, and after a few hours of messing with it I gave up, bent the weatherstrip as mush against the glass as I could (not easy as it's soft elasticy rubber) and left it, with no problems for ages.
I took the van for it's first commercial car wash ever last week, and the inside of the van steamed up really badly. I figured that must just be a symptom of the different temperatures and cranked the blowers up, which then started squirting droplets of water up onto the windscreen. I assume the water got in through the misfitting cowl panel/windscreen gap when the brushes forced it through.
Is there any established way of getting these things to lie flat, or failing that is there a product I can use to re-seal the panel to the windscreen? The raised bit is directly in front of the driver and the gap is only a millimeter or two. I'm happy enough to take it off and have another go, but the main problem last time was that the plastic bucket bit that sits beneath it between pollen filter compartment and engine is a tight fit and seems almost to be the wrong shape altogether. I got it in in the end, but with that in place I couldn't get the cowl panel flush, and with the cowl panel in place I couldn't get the 'bucket' in, and when I did finally get it in it forced the cowl back up.
Any help much appreciated as I'd like to be able to use carwashes in future without drenching my pollen filter.
Cheers

Thanks very much for that - just the sort of response I was after :¬D
I'll give it a go at weekend assuming there's no blizzards, sleet, ice and all the other expected weather.

Morning all.
My brakes (I can't really tell whether it's front or back) have started to make a fairly quiet scraping noise (kind of dull - not metallic sounding) when the car is cold. It stops when they warm up or after about five miles. It's only happened regularly for a couple of days, and yesterday they felt stiff to disengage when I set off after being parked for the day.
A couple of weeks ago they made a deep squealy noise when I reversed down a slope and braked, then they scraped for a day or so, then it went away until now.
I nipped into my local tyre/brake/steering specialist place this morning and they said scraping when cold was normal, but seeing as it's only just started doing it I figured I'd book it in for a check anyway.
From this limited information, can any of you suggest what it might be - is it normal (news to me) and the brakes just haven't done it before for some unknown reason, or is it a sign of pad/shoe wear? Or could it be an indicator of something more serious?
Thanks in advance

One last thing - pattern drums are about £25/pair for Mk2 Cavalier, probably same for Astra, hardly worth putting old ones back on. A set of springs etc is good value for time saved if you're changing the shoes - about £4 from Partco.
Bizarre tale this one. The local council have taken advantage of the XMas break/school holidays to do some work on the local roads. One of their tasks was to repaint the pedestrian crossing on the road. Gallons of shiny white paint later, they look good as new. However, every evening, a large water truck drives along the main thotoughfares, using high-pressure jets to rid the road of rubbish. Yours truly arrives at pedestrian crossing soon after truck goes by, dashes over ... and falls base-over-apex as my ageing trainers' grip fails to come to terms with new high-tech road coating - which is now wet! I couldn't even STAND UP, the stuff was like something out of It's a Knockout! I had to slither across to unpainted buts to get some traction.
I can't wait for the first rains... then we'll have some dodgem action there! Read more
hope you keep more tread on your car tyres than the trainers ian! :-)

I think that it was 7 torx heads as I undid 6 and accidently snapped the last one off when replacing my heater fan.
