I am going on a trip to Malaga via Bilbao in March; however, the diesel car I will be going in has only done about 2,000 miles, any advice on maximising engine life? Any thought on the extended use of cruise control?
Also if you have any tips, ideas etc about where to stay, sites to see places to avoid etc I would be grateful.

thanks for all your replies, keep them coming,we cannot fly for medical reasons.
Good morning all
On my way home from work just now the steering on my '89 Golf GTD suddenly became very notchy.
I feel as though I am 'fighting' the steering, especially when turning left. I checked for punctures etc, but as it was dark could only ascertain that the tyres were the round shape that the makers intended.
The steering will turn maybe an eighth of a turn, then notch, the another eighth, then notch and so on.
If you have any idea of what this maybe, then I'd be very grateful. I just hope it isn't going to be too expensive!
Cheers

Yeah bearing in the steering column goes- can move the steering wheel up and down? There are nylon bushings at the end of the rack where the track rods emerge from (well there is on a gti). the can wear and break. Maybe one had broken and got caught. Is there any play in the rack. Get the car on ramps and yank the track rods.
Give the front wheels a kick- are the top mounts gone? Not that difficult to change with the right tool- i got a friend to weld me one up i piece of steel with a whole in it welded to a socket.
Does the car have power steering?
Give us a clue chaps as to the value of a March 02 1.7 Puma in red. 25k. tidy. full service hist' etc.

Or try Parkers.
I know it's posing but we've had a 'cherished' number plate in the family for years. There's never been any problem in having it changed to a new car. It's always been done more or less in a couple of days by the dealer. Suddenly the change over takes 'at least 10 days because of new procedures'. Our new car is sitting in the dealer waiting for the DVLA to do the transfer. The dealer is at a loss to explain why the change in time scale and the DVLA web site doesn't help. Apparently the dealer can no longer phone the tax office to find out what's going on. Everything now has to be done by post.
Does anyone know, please, what's going on and why the change? Read more
& they've started carrying out more inspections of the vehicles involved.
Like you say, before it was quite a simple procedure.
Still, keeps a few people in Swansea & local VRO's busy!!

I imagine that it's in the interests of reducing number plate crimes.

Spent many years strapped into rally cars by such devices. They are undoubtedly superior to conventional seatbelts in just about any crash situation, but they are less user-friendly.
If you must fit one make sure you get proper advice about mounting points and any strenghtening panels that may be required. If you don't you'll be risking your life just for pose value.
Oh, and don't forget to tell your insurance company - they'll add 10 to 25% for the privelege, otherwise you'll be joining the growing band of uninsured drivers.
Russia is struggling with the same problem as the UK of many uninsured drivers (though in much higher numbers whichever way you cut it), but is doing so coming from an opposite background. Apparently, until recently, insurance was optional!

Just had to take my van in for a new offside headlight assembly today due to a smashed lens, nothing much out of the ordinary except that I've not had even so much as a cracked headlight in 28 years on the road, but now I've had two in four weeks. Both offside, both hit in exactly the same place. Our garage reckon they replace about three a year across a fleet of about 200 vehicles.
Is a smashed light that rare and should I dash out and buy a lottery ticket on the basis that odds are swinging my way?

>>Another unspoken reason is of course cost, and I think this is the real reason. I could have specified a full size (alloy) wheel for very little extra, but didn't because of the fact that I have never used one to date, and that if I did have one, I couldn't order the wheel well mounted subwoofer that compliments the awesome Dolby Surround stereo! I will of course be cross (per original post) when I end up wishing I did have a full size spare, when the puncture eventually happens!<<
I think you will find a 225x17" alloy will not fit in the spare wheel well anyway, the floor won't go down flat.
VD5D.
I need to get a small runaround (fiesta size) automatic car for my wife.
Needs to be reliable (new baby), and I've only got £1000ish budget.
I've discovered from this site that Fiesta and Clio Auto's are not reliable.
Is there anything that is left out there!!!!
Any recommendations please?????? Read more
I moved your original question over to Discussion as I thought you would have had more luck asking there.
