Small Auto Runaround - CarlW
I need to get a small runaround (fiesta size) automatic car for my wife.
Needs to be reliable (new baby), and I've only got £1000 budget.

Any recommendations ??????

You may be able to get a corsa 1.4 (hi-torque) auto for around that sort of figure. Maybe a mirca aswell i think, but both may be a struggle to get for a £1000. Can't really think of any others, not sure if there is an auto version of the fiesta.

I don't know if an automatic is available, but how about a Daihatsu Charade? Beggar all street cred, but bullet proof reliability.

Just one point though, that isn't intended to be a criticism. If your beloved and your new baby (congratulations, by the way!) are to be travelling around, would not a slightly larger car with better crash protection be better? I'm not talking huge here, but you could probably get a near immaculate (if slightly elderly) Volvo 340 auto for that sort of money.

Cheers

Any opinions on as Astra Auto, its about the right size???

I;'ve got a Fiesta which was an automatic when I bought it but got changed to manual. That would be perfect for your needs but you'll have to look hard to get one for a grand.

Thanks for the replies.

Thought about a Micra, but the pram won't fit in the boot, so that one's out.
Still thinking, now considering a Punto, or a Corsa, still has to be Auto though.

Any opinions anybody?

Astra autos are good, Aisin Warner boxes, bulletproof.

How can i tell if its an Aisin Warner box, is there an easy way by looking?

If its the new shape Astra they all have Aisin boxes, but even the old astras had good boxes. An auto box specialist once told me he rarely sees Vx or Toyota boxes gone wrong.
