Question Scratch repairs
Roobarrb

An attack by vandals has left deep scratches in the roof of my year-old metallic grey Ford. My dealer is talking re-spray, but I've seen adverts for firms which paint only the scratches. Many of these companies apparently work out of the back of a van. Has anyone used one of these firms? Can they really 'invisibly mend' paintwork? Read more

As I said you need to ask around. FWIW these deep vandalism scratches are now so common they advertise a special system for dealing with them. Whether is's any good or not is a another matter.

Agree on the comments. This is one of three very good internet sites I visit regularly (the other 2 are share trading). It has by far the best informed and least bigotted/rude posts of any.

Long may it continue as an example to all others.

My car (98 ford mondeo) has yellow painted front fog lights. is it legal or am i breaking the law? thanks... Read more

Spanner Jack

Sorry Hawkeye,
but only REAR foglamps form part of the MOT test.

And then it is only the Offside Rear one that is required!
(And only necessary for vehicles built after 1980)

Front fog lamps are 'additional' lamps and definitely not tested.

This is not off topic!
I've recently fallen for someone who lives in the north of England, something like 230 miles and 4 hrs 15 minutes (according to the AA website) from my home in the south of England.
I am going to be spending quite a bit of time on the M6 (and the new road bypassing part of it) going to see her at weekends.

Now the decision point: My car is needing replacement soon so what should I choose? Something reasonably comfortable and quiet, economical (diesel comes to mind but not of the rattly sort). I could spend up to £15K on this but not something new, and something older would be fine provided its reliable. With this sort of mileage (and I do quite a lot of miles anyway without these extra ones), anything reasonably new will lose value quickly.
I like the BMW 320 diesel, meets most of the requirements except the last one. Would a secondhand one be a good choice? Or something comfy and cheap like a C5? How old?

Other factor is that I like driving on roads other than motorways and so something that handles well is a preferred choice.

Any thoughts?

This article on the Motley Fool site may be of interest:

You might not expect it from the name "Motley Fool", but the site is generally full of good sense about financial things. I picked up this article from the daily e-mail of abstracts and links that I receive from the site. Read more

This would be the study that consistently states the Land Rover Freelander as a particualry good buy, either new or second-hand and has very small depreciation.

Going off real world experience I would suggest this article is a little in the clouds ......

Hi chaps, not read this forum for ages now but it's good to be back. I hope the backroom still has its old charm and backroomers that are happy to help!

My mate has a Xantia Diesel and it appears the glow plugs are knackered (bad starting). My question is, how difficult is it to change the plugs and do we need any specialist tools? Any pro tips?

Cheers chaps,

I'm surprised you remember me! I feel quite honored! Yes, still in L.E. but currently attempting to leave the nest and find a house now that I've finished uni and can earn some proper dosh.

My friend has decided to get a mechanic type mate to fit the plugs for him, since he knows not a great deal about cars he decided if you guys say it's scary, he's certainly not doing it! Being at work all day also means all jobs would have to be done in the dark - not an entirely helpfull addition to the problem!

Thanks a lot chaps. The backrooms done me proud once again.

Mark.

SR,
The many who do a few mph over the limit ARE the target of enforcement - by ruthless machines!

Where is the machine which automatically prosecutes a driver who is uninsured?

For that matter, where is the machine which automatically prosecutes a pedestrian crossing against a 'Don't Walk' sign?

Should someone receive a fine and points on their licence for parking on a side street (not a thoroughfare) for 30 seconds while they buy a paper, because that stubby dead-end street has double yellow lines?
A machine could do that already - I suppose it's now only a matter of time. Then we rusty-haloed will have another thing to grumble about while we wait rather longer for them to invent a machine which can automatically prosecute shoplifters and vandals.

Ooops! lunchbreak nearly over - must cease posting and get back to work before the machine squirts some more salt-water onto my headgear.

Study in todays Telegraph says that cars and people carriers killed about 1 in 25 pedestrians they struck.

Larger 4 x 4s (SUV's)killed almost 1 in 8.Usual cause of death head injuries .

I question what possible justification can anyone except a farmer give for using these vehicles in towns?

Judging by the above it can't be pedestrian safety yet the majority of schools with very vulnerable little pedestrians always seem to have a fair collection of 4 x 4's around at start and finish times.

The difference I would submit is that a Bullbar would give you a dry slap as opposed to the Jag Cat which would most likely spear you?

Used to be a common sight on A.1. Southerners returning from Jockland after a hunting trip with deer antlers wired to the front of their cars.

Reg 52 did very nicely.

I would therefore advise PU no bull horns on the Spanish 90. Ole.
