Now that it's very easy to buy a warranty form various companies, i was thinking that surely that takes the risk out of buying a second hand motor from the classifieds.

As long as the warranty is comprehensive, you're covered?

As i'm in the market to buy a new used car i thought i'd see if anyone has any views on the matter in case i lose my hard earned cash. (Budget up to £9k)

All good advice.
Last time i bought a car from the classified, i made sure it had a FSH and i did an HPI check. As the car was just under £5k i took the risk and didn't have it checked over, but as i now have a bigger budget i guess it would make sense.
The other point i would add, is it always helps to like the person you're buying from, that way it makes the transaction that much smoother and both parties come away happy. I try to make it a point not to buy from people i don't get on with especially dealers, if they're moody/rude before you've even given them the money how will they act if you ever have a problem! I don't know if anyone read the thread about the salesmen demanding you buy the car before you've driven it, it's happened to me that's why i prefer buying privately and hopefully you get a better deal.

I can't remember if Renault used cassette points on this engine, if they did you will need a dwell meter to set the gap. If they're ordinary points 18 to 20 thou would be a good starting point.

Has anyone any ideas or tricks as to how to get the clutch cable end hook through the top end of the pedal on a 1991 Cavalier Mk 3? Does the hook go through from the return spring side or the other side. I suspect part of the problem is that the hook naturally lies pointing downwards rather than to the side. I've spent hours lying across the front seats with head and shoulders under the dash with long nose pliers, screwdriver, mirror and lamp. I got it in once, popped in the return spring and as soon as I put my foot on the pedal it came out again. I had put it in with the shaft, rather than the head of the hook on the same side of the pedal as the return spring. Please someone givuzaclue to ease my frustration at this apparently simple task.

I will ask the guy who services my Cavalier as he changed my cable when doing the clutch with no problem. I know the agony you are going through as changing two brake switches in ten years was painful! He obviously has the knack as he explained how the annoying squeak you get from the depressing the clutch pedal can be fixed by just lifting the end of the cable enough & pushing in some grease. I has greased & sprayed WD40 from all directions to no effect. Then in a flash he demostrated this to me & the squeak was gone.

I am looking to purchase a new motor (C2 GT) via a Broker, but have anyone here used micronetshowroom of Nottingham as their broker for new cars before? Would like to know what the service is like etc.

Thanks NoDosh :)

I have now written an email enquiring about lead times and pricing, however 1 thing I have asked is about a quote that I've got from them - just asked them to make sure that the quote is "Fixed" and won't be effected by the Euro as its a UK sourced car from the local Citroen Dealership. I don't want to find myself in the place of some of the other people who had price hikes due to the euro going up/down.

When I get all of the info together, I will be off to the local Citroen to see if they "wishful" can match the quote that Micronet gave me. (To be honest - £1500 off list price? - could I get that at the dealership, as I have never haggled a new car salesman before).

Whatever happened to all the left-hand drive Beetles that were on general sale in this country before the right-hand models rolled off the production line?

Have most of them ended up being exported? and of those left in this country have they depreciated a lot more compared to the right-handed models.

I think they wanted a firm underwrite on your motor before comitting themselves.

Normal practice these days.

In the telegraph today in HJ's motoring columl our leader mentioned that a mechanic had spotted that one of brake pipes had been cut.

Was this an attempt on his life?.

Has he upset someone on this forum?.

Who would want to harm our beloved leader?.

Has he a dark past that has come back to seek revenge?.

Has he any skeletons it the cupboard?.

HJ, come clean , we want to help, as you know we have in this forum, police, lawyers etc. etc. that would form a team to find the dastardly person that tried to eliminate our leader.

This forum will not last without our leader.

Something must be done!

'Condign'

Sorry people, I read too much. I will try not to use obscure words in future.

See the 'Concise Oxford Dictionary'. I checked in Fowler's 'Modern English Usage' to make sure if I had used it correctly. It means deservedly severe, and with the emphasis of appropriate to the crime.

my 98 peugeot 106xs suffers from front brake fade when driven hard. I have renewed the front discs and pads as well as rear shoes but the front still overheat when driven hard resulting in nasty brake fade. I was surprised to find that the discs are solid and not vented. Presumeably this is the problem. Anyone else experienced this problem? And is there a solution, maybe uprated discs and pads?

Also can anyone tell me the difference between the 106 xsi and 106 gti ?

Thanks
