Question Golf rattles
Philiplex

I have recently bought a Mk3 Golf 1.8CL complete with dented door but almost complete VW service history and 100K on the clock which seems to have a rattle thats either developed or i've just noticed. There also now seems to be more vibration on the accelerator pedal at motorway speeds now than there was. On startup from cold there's a brief rattly / knocky noise that's reminiscent of an old Triumph Vitesse i had with a shot bottom end. This settles down to a bit of a rattly clatter (which you can't hear in the car). It only seems to make the knocky noise on startup (but still rattles when warm), from cold which seems strange (if it was the bottom end), as i would have thought it would be more pronounced when warm (thin oil). I'm thinking of taking the sump off if it's accessable and seeing if there is a big end with more movement than the others. Am i barking up the wrong tree, if not is there any mileage in just changing the bearing shells rather than having the crank reground etc?

Any ideas? Read more

If you suspect it's tappet rattle, you could try some Forté top end treatment.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, in case the prog was a repeat, but.....

Apart from usual entertainment from low life wasting Police time, why did the officer feel he should also add to this poor use of resources & create a potentially dangerous situation?

I'm referring to the stopping & interviewing of the driver & salesman on a test drive.

Commonsense would have said, it was it a good idea to hi-light the foolish practice of driving with obscured vision. But on a busy road, plenty of heavy traffic passing, filming it too, all adding to the risk of an accident.I don't think so!!

& a fixed penalty £30 fine, too!!

CRAZY!!!!!!

The thing that I found strange, was that in one of the "cases", I think it might have been the two drunk women and the taxi fare; the officer seemed to want to prolong the argument, instead of trying to get them to shut up!

Otherwise it seems to be more teenage kids TWOCing, and there is no way of stopping them, or punishing them. What is the answer?

Father in law has a Volvo S70 2.0 (think its a 10v). has 93,000 miles - 98/S Plate. Dark Blue, aircon etc. Great condition.

He's had it up for £4000 but cant sell it for love nor money. What will he have to do to sell it, without completely losing the plot money wise? How much do you guys think its worth? Read more

The market for selling cars privately has deteriorated in recent times and December, surely, is the worst possible time of year...? I have given up, after advertising my Lexus, 'til New Year.

Thinking about fitting a tracker to the new motor - this will be done at the dealer by the tracker company ? I think.
What do other BR's think of these devices, you read all the advertising blurb and according to this they are up there in sliced bread territory. Just wondered if there were any real life stories from BRs either good or bad.

Thanks

How does a modern car fitted with normal security aids get stolen without the keys?.

Easy. The lowlife rent a car for the day and experiment with how the alarms and immobilisers work.
Even on my ordinary Vectra it has some kind of device (second
press of the remote button) which immobilises the car.

Actually the second press of the remote button activates the deadlocking on the doors. The immobiliser part consists of a chip inside the keyfob. When put in the ignition will tell the car's ecu whether it's the correct chip or not.

The amount of clutter alongside the roads in towns waiting to become the "immovable object" in the case of a minor accident or error resulting in a vehicle leaving the road is becoming ridiculous.
There are lamp posts, telegraph poles, electricity poles, trees and road signs sometimes on average about every ten yards, including many which are redundant and have been chopped off at waist or head height and just left there, often for years.
Can't waiting restriction signs go on a lamp post like they used to? (and why do they always face the road - if you are parked next to them you can't read them through the roof of the car and if you aren't parked next to them you have to stand in the road to read them?)
Must every sign have its own pole?
Must lamp posts be on the kerbside rather than at the back of the pavement with a slightly longer head?
If you are looking for ways to make the roads safer (and less unsightly) much could be done with a little thought. Read more

Your comments and suggestions are far too much like basic common sense to be ever adopted.
The total lack of liason and communication between the utility companies never ceases to amaze me. You see a stretch of road being dug up by the Gas providers one week, only to be back filled and within weeks you see the same stretch being dug up by another utility.
All this duplication costs an enormous amount of additional money, and it is us "Joe Public" that has to foot the bill.!!!

Phoenicks,

It might help if you tell us what browser software you're using.

or JCB's as they are commonly known.

for about the fourth time in as many weeks I was stuck behind one for two miles on the way in to work this morning, along a stretch of road which is uphill all the way. (But gently so, not enough to require any signposting)

Now I thought these beasts had all singing, all dancing gearboxes with more ratios than I've had birthdays, so I'm puzzled that more than once, as I was trolling along a safe distance behind him in first gear in my 90bhp diesel we were going so slowly that I had to either come to a stop or stall

I've never driven one (tho' I have driven the odd tractor, which is similar ?) but am I right to assume this was poor driving and avoidable, or am I expecting to much ?

Ivor - i have noticed that when these things accelerate, they don't half develop a very uncomfortable pitching movement, but that wasn't the problem this morning

Will they throw the book at him?

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of former Formula One driver Eddie Irvine, after he was caught speeding on a scooter with no licence and no insurance, court officials have said.

The 38-year-old was arrested by police in London on July 24 this year for driving at over 30mph on a scooter through the city's Hyde Park, with no scooter licence and no insurance.

The former Jordan and Ferrari racing driver, who won four Grand Prix in Formula One, was charged with excess speed, no insurance and driving otherwise in accordance with licence.

The facts were proved in his absence at a court hearing last month and he was due to appear before Bow Street Magistrates on Wednesday for sentencing but failed to attend.

When the court heard there was no contact from the racing driver a warrant with bail was issued for his arrest.
