Hi,
I've been a bit of an idiot and managed to put the key for my Mk 4 Golf GTI through the washing machine. The key will now not unlock remotely my cenral locking and disable the alarm. I've taken the key apart, dried it out and fitted new batterys and still no luck. Has anyone got any other ideas??
This is the only key I have and a replacement from VW is about £140 so any hlp would be appreciated. thanks. Read more
I am having problems with my 1996 2.0L 8v Vento auto trans. The gearshift during acceleration feels like it is holding back and causing huge flatspots. It is ok 1st to 2nd but in the other changes it is very annoying. I have had engine diagnostics by VW dealer who say there is no issue there. Also have had trans oil changed but problem still exists.
Have changed plugs & leads as well.
Also revs stutter quite badly when I have come to a stop then settle after a few seconds.
Can anyone help??

Hi all
Last month my car was written off.
As i waited behind a parked car (two thirds of the front of my car was behind it)for the oncoming car to pass i saw to my horror that the car swerved from its original course(opposite side of the road) straight into my car at about 25-30mph without breaking.I got out of my car to check that the woman who was driving and her kids in the back were all OK.Thankfully they were.
The Lady appologised to me saying that she didnt see me as she had turned around to stop her children fighting in the back and tat is why her car swerved into mine.I told her not to worry but to make sure her kids were fine as a car can be replaced but children cant. She admitted to me responsibility for the accident at the time....................however i soon got a letter from her insurance company blaming me(Incredible!!!!)when i phoned my insurance company yesterday to see when i will get the Excess on my old car paid to me(Luckly i have got fully comp insurance so have alreay been paid for most of the car)the insurance company said that we(me and Direct Line) were claiming responsabiliy for the accident. After a heated conversation on the phone the man from Direct Line said that they will put it through the split claim department but there was no guarantees that they will fight my case for me!!!!!!!!!!!
What do i pay them money for?
It seems quite incredible that i should be blamed for an accident when i wasn't even moving!!!
Any thoughts? Read more
Sorry this is getting a bit off-message T-Bod
As I mentioned earlier, I have had two accidents, liability for which was accepted by the other party. However, when it came to renewal time this year my premium had gone up by an eye-watering 44% (from costly to very costly). When I phoned the company to ask why it had risen so steeply, they told me that there had been a lot of claims for my particular marque (Mitsubishi FTO). I may be paranoid but I suspect that my claim has risen because I have had two accidents, even though they were not my fault.
Anyone have a view on this?
I just read a suggestion that the Police be given the power to confiscate mobile phones when used while driving - Magistrate to decide whether said phones be returned to owner, or destroyed.
Any thoughts on this?

Yes...well us Omega owners could come up with a set of pre-defined SMS messages no doubt....
1) Your cam belt / idler pulley / water pump bearing is about to fail.
2) Your cam cover gasket is leaking oil onto the hot exhaust again.
3) Your idle speed control valve is getting sticky again.
4) Your front suspension bushes are wearing out again.
What do you all think?
Recently collected new car (MR2, it's lovely!) and the salesman is pushing GAP insurance.
I won't bore you with the details but the car is effectively not financed and Tesco will replace the car like-for-like if written off within 12 months.
So, is the £300ish for GAP insurance to cover the difference between Tesco's payout and the replacement value of a new car if written off within 3 years a good buy? I have looked on the web for others offereing GAP insurance and the price seems sensible.
Any thoughts
thanks

scan it and mail it to me - I'll read it for both of us.
Anybody had to replace a front body panel for a Pug 306.
This is the underlying body panel to which the lights, grill and rad attach to.
No mention of it in the Haynes manual, but it is available as a seperate body panel.
I'm assuming it is a bolt-off/bolt-on job.
Any help/tips appreciated. Read more
Sorry! Not a body repair specialist myself but often find myself trying to find how to remove various Peugeot bumpers.....not easy....you should try a 406!

I would like to change my car. I currently drive a Renault Scenic auto, and want to move down to a small car to be more cost effective as I do about 30000 per year.
I haven't been able to test drive a Yaris MMT, but have driven the Jazz CVT-7 which was great to drive except being a little hard.
I did like the Jazz very much, but as I do door to door and work from the car, sat nav and car phone kit are neccesities.
These are not options on the Jazz, but there are ways around this with Smartnav, and a generic car kit, although I'd obviosuly prefer them to be built in.
So my question is as I haven't been able to test drive the Yaris, should I consider it against the Jazz, or is there something else that will do what I need better.
I have driven the Citroen C3 and Ford Fiesta, both with direct shift/tiptronic, they were very sluggish compared to the Jazz, and the jerk on transmission was awful.
I'd appreciate any advice.

You could get the bits separately, then have access to the best/best value. And have the better car- Jazz. It can also avoid dealership bodging. Beware dealer fitted accessories: you're in the clutches of odd-job boy!
Folks,
I picked up some synthetic oil from GSF in Sheffield yesterday. At a good price.
I intend to run a fully synth in my XM 2.5 as a "life-prolonging" exercise (there have been hostoric issues with cam lobe wear on this engine, so I understand), to make life on the short runs a bit easier, and for the simple fact that Mrs G. is not always as sympathetic as she should be on short runs from cold.
It's Quantum Syntha. Gold API SJ/CF ACEA A3 B3. With a Volkswagen label on it.
However, the front of the can says "...approved for use...gasoline engines". No mention of diesels.
I take it that this is OK for my XM? Are there any addtives, etc, in a semi-synth. that are missing in the fully synth. which make it unsuitable for diesels?
Comments welcome.
Cheers

Life was so much more simple in the days of Castrol R and Duckhams 20/50.
(Has anyone seen a pump-action forecourt 2-stroke oil dispenser in recent times?)

Hi,
I'm shopping for a new socket set and hoped some of you guys may have some input/experiences. i'm looking at a teng tools socket set or the halfords professional range. does anyone have anything good/bad to say about these and other socket set manufacturers (i can't afford hugely expensive sets i.e. snap on)
thanks
Richard

Might take a trip into Halfords later and have a look. That seems a bargain to me!
I have a Draper 1/2" socket set, with both imperial and metric sizes - very pleased I am with it too, given the price I paid for it :-) - it was incorrectly packed at the factory, so I got it cheap cheap..
I also have a selection of Snap-on socketry.....it does the job as well as the Draper kit IMO...
The best Snap-On tool I have bought? 3/8" drive air ratchet - saves me loads of hassle nearly every day. It is immensely powerful unlike some of the 'market' brands you can buy.

Given that:
An estimated one million cars are on the road without tax, insurance, mot etc.
Over one million people are being criminalised for speeding,
Thousands are driving under the influence of drink, or drugs,
Thousands of drivers need their eyes testing,
Thousands are driving whilst on the phone, reading maps, snacking etc,
Cars are being driven with no lights, one light, fog lights, blue lights, undercar lights, and xmas lights,
Common sense and courtesy are rarely evident,
Lane discipline is virtually non-existant and the motorways are jam-packed and have ruts.
Would it be fair to say that it is too late to turn the clock back, and stem the rising tide of motoring anarchy?
Is there a solution or does anarchy rule ok?
