A rough guess is £1400 if it is as good as the mileage and history expect.

Of course, as with all part exchanges, a dealer who could have given you a £2k discount on a new Astra could give you £3400 for it if you pay list...

Question Oil Treatment
Joe 90

I have just bought a new diesel engined car and being a sad sack was watching an infomercial on a product called Duralube, it got me thinking, do engine oil treatments like Duralube, slick 50 etc have any benefit? If they have I assume you put them in after you have run the engine in and what about the warranty is that invalidated? Read more

I think you mean 1 litre per 1000 *miles*. At 1 litre per 1000km you are nearly driving a two-stroke!

Mind you, this sort of consumption is excusable at 227k miles - its a different story when the engine has done less than 50k miles!

How does £1200 sound for a 98S Rover 416 Sli with 118k and a yearly service history? And how about £300 p/x for my 91J Rover 416 GTi with 186k and no service history?

Need advice quick!! Thanks.

The other thing (correct me if I'm wrong) is that this
will be powered by a 1.6 litre version of the K
series engine

Unless it's the auto, in which case it may have the frankly ancient but reliable Honda engine from the ballade and civic circa 1989.

The power steering on my J-reg Rover 416 Gti doesn't work very well when the engine is cold, especially when the revs drop. The fluid is black and the reservoir is almost full. Will it do any good changing the fluid?

Thanks. Read more

It could also be that someone has already added a molybedenum disulphide loaded additive to the oil. This would turn it black (Molyslip it's called, comes in a green & white syringe). You could test for this by putting a sample in a jar and leaving it for a week to see if the particles settle out.

May also be that someone has cooked the pump. Holding the steering at full lock stop you will hear a lot of hissing and pumping going on. The pump has nowhere to pump the fluid to in this instance and so it heats up very quickly. Most pumps are specified to last 30 seconds under these conditions. So if a previous owner used to do a lot of 47 point turns or sitting at junctions on full lock waiting for a gap, then you may have a duff pump.

I'd try getting another pump from a breakers and use good quality new oil too.

Not speeding, necessarily (or cameras, come to that).

This arrived in my in-box today. I assume it is correct?

"Those new electronic signs on the M4 were switched on this Tuesday. The bad news is that they are rigged with the SPECS speed cameras. SPECS is a computer-camera based system. As you go past the sign a digital camera reads your number plate. When you go past the next sign your number plate is read again. The computer 'knows' how far apart the signs are so it can work out
your average speed between the two, or three or four.
The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket without any form of human intervention. It does this for every single vehicle that passes. You will not know you've been caught as the cameras don't flash. They work 24/7, 365 days a year, and theoretically, there's absolutely no limit on the number of tickets that the system can issue.

The whole section of the M4 between Theale (J12) and Membury Services (between 14 and 15) is wired, both ways. Radar detectors will be of no use as SPECS is entirely passive, there is no radar or laser beam to detect."

It appears that they are all in the Speed Camera threads. Which is where this thread will be found later today.

I'm thinking of buying a diesel - I'll be driving around 20,000 miles a year and looking to at a price range of between £5000 and £6000 trade price.

Any suggestions what will be a good buy I was thinking about a Focus 1.8 TDi any other suggestions in that price range with low-ish mileage? Read more

No one has suggested a VW/Audi or derivative. Dare I suggest that you'll get better image, build quality and residuals than from Ford or any French make.

the protective cover on the lower side of the cat. on my car has rotted away along one edge and is flapping in the wind. The cat. body itself is solid but rusty. Is there any protective coating I can apply to the cat. body to cure and control the rusting process? Read more

Yes they are Dave but not of the purist quality and mnior corrosion is normal. Often the welded on heat sheild uses a softer lower quality stainless weld material and it corrodes first and the heat sheild falls off. Regards Peter

Hello,

Just had a brand new Clio 1.2 Dynamique delivered. First thing was when I fill it up the petrol gauge only shows 3/4 full. That will hopefully get sorted tomorrow.

Anyway my main point is this. The car had been sitting out in the rain overnight and I took off and drove home and then there was what sounds like a trickling stream coming from the passenger side of the car running somewhere. This lasted about 10 mins. The car is dry and I don't know where the water went.

I told my salesmen (only interesed in me telling Renault that everything is ok so he gets his commission) the problem.

He said they all do it, it is weird, but don't be worried!!! This is surely wrong. Nothing in the manual says beware of the sound of running water. I don't expect this kind of fob off from a dealership and need advice from other Clio owners to find out if this is indeed the case or if this salesman just full of BS? Read more

Would a brand new Clio have a sunroof? It's becoming increasingly difficult to buy any sort of car with a sunroof these days. Aircon seems to be the norm. My Mum has a 1994 Clio (with a sunroof) You can hear it draining off quite loudly. On the other hand, my C5's aircon gurgles away gently for ages after the engine has been switched off - sounds remarkably like my belly rumbling! Condensation drains off to the road.

Another possibility might be the plenum chamber for the air intake. Water could collect then drain off slowly through pipes.

I suppose there could just be an air pocket in the cooling system if it hasn't been properly bled - but that would seem unlikely on a new car.

Using the Forum Search (the option where you log in/out) I came across these previous threads discussing Pilot Green.
