In the topic 'Where are you from?', NoDosh bemoaned thus:

>Is this what we have to look forward to now that MSN
>chatrooms have been withdrawn?

That gives me an idea. Watch this space...

Does anyone have a feel for the sales volume for the new registration. Are we likely to be offered bargains ? Read more

I have prepared a report on my Legacy as follows.
The servicing and spare parts cost includes everything I have spent since I collected the car from the dealer. This includes bulbs, mats, punctures and one new tyre. I have it serviced every 5000 miles. The present value, (my estimate £7000) has been subtracted from the initial cost. Mostly used in the Peak District (lots of hills), and suburban trips. Very rarely on the motorway.

Purchase date - 01 07 01
Report date - 15 10 03
Mileage - 30,042
991.03 gals petrol
30.31 mpg

Petrol cost - £5,505.82
Service & parts cost - £1,114.62
Insurance to date - £1.003.02
Original cost - £15,631.00
Realistic today value - £7,000.00
Total cost to date - £17,748.64

Fuel cost per mile ? 18.33p
Total cost per mile ? 54.11p

The clutch was replaced under warranty at 17,000 miles. The only other trouble was caused during servicing, the dealer said that it was a broken wire, I think that it was a connection left loose.
Impressions : It runs so smoothly that my wife falls asleep every trip, in fact, the engine is so smooth that I often forget to change gear. It is marvellous in ice & snow.

hey

I have a 2.5 v6 CDX omega on a M 1995.
It started showing signs of headgasket failure (oil in water, not oil cooler). I took the heads off to discover both gaskets were blown. I renewed the gaskets, cambelt( inc tentioners) and had the heads skimmed. i put it all back together and found it didnt run. I checked the timing and its exact, and also compression. I have a consistant reading of 130 psi on all 6 cyl.
The car will run on all 6 cyl but requires a lot of cranking to start it, it wont idle either. runs sweet when started. I have tried changing the crank position sensor, still no luck. My friend has a Vectra with the same prob, Is this a common fault after headgasket jobs? Both cars overheated badly.

thanks

Definately sounds like an air leak or a vacuum sensing hose not correctly fitted.

Best of luck.

Hi
My 1992 Renault Clio 16v 'finally' needs two new rear tyres. Kwik-Fit has quoted £300 to fit two Michelin 188/55 V 15 SXV1. Admittedly, this includes £50 for tracking, which they say may not be required. This still seems very expensive to me. I have Michelin's on the front. Is it a good idea to mix brands front/rear. If so, any cheaper brands to recommend? Found tyres a lot cheaper on the Web but wonder the reaction turning up at my local fitters asking the charge to fit them. Any special deals you know of in the Dartford, Kent area.
Any useful advice you have to recommend appreciated.

Anyone got any experience of "Stunner" tyres?

I have a pair on the rear of my Omega V6. The tread pattern looks fine and they have worn well. No complaint about grip.

The ones I have are omnidirectional as Stunner also do some which must be fitted in one direction only. Mine were fitted by a main Vauxhall dealer which has serviced my car from new, and I trust the judgement of their service manager.

I understand they are made by one of the big manufacturers but can't remember who.

On this site they state that the new nissan micra auto is not a tiptronic or cvt box, and state it is a normal 4 speed auto. On the nissan site it says that the box is electronic.

Does this mean it is not a proper mechanical automatic box and one of these F Speed type electrical things that won't hold on hills and is jerk to drive?

Where is the best place to buy a Nissan Micra 1.2 S automatic from? (A Broker with a discount that will deliver the vehicle)

Can anyone recommend a decent digital tyre pressure gauge to me please.

The one that santa gave me from Halfords is OK but I find that I loose half the pressure by the time that I get a decent reading which defeats the object somewhat.

I want one that pushes on to the valve, measures the pressure and then can be removed without loosing loads of (h)air.

Thanks

I've been browsing the site selling the Accugage HJ recommends and spotted that they have a 12v air compressor (with gauge, obviously) powered from the cigar lighter socket for just £6 more than the gauge alone. Seems like a more useful piece of kit as you can ensure the correct pressure when your car is still on the driveway and the tyres are cold, rather than having to take a trip to the nearest filling station. Anyone out there bought this particular item able to recommend it?

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone had had experience of the swing arm bearings siezing. Suspension goes hard and ride is terrible.
I know I need to replace them but am aware that when they go the chances are the axle is also "US". Options are buy just the axle from dealer with bearings but will be a long job to fit all the parts together which will be several hours labour. Buy one complete with arms and torsion bars from a scrap dealer, may be guaranteed but no good if it is put on and does not work (about £150 plus fitting). Third option I know is to get a reconditioned one with new bearings all set up to go on complete with swing arms. This is about £400 plus fitting if I chose to let someone else do it(about £100).
I favour the last method but can anyone recommend any other action or place that can recondition them cheaper than the above. After all, they only get them from a scrappy themselves.

Any suggestions appreciated Read more

In the good old days the underside of a car was covered in grease nipples and a grease gun was an essential maintenance tool, then came the curse if the low maintenance sealed bearing...
A good fix, proper engineering, well done!
