Totally against inconsiderate people parking on double yellows and believe that they deserve to be booked.
However, I was pleased to see all the traffic wardens and police around manchester airport yesterday turn a blind eye, and actually park people up on the double yellows around the airport.
Guess they are human afterall and understood the significance of the occasion. Read more
New road signs seem to have popped up along the M6, at least between Knutsford and Stoke. They have a number on them, somewhere in the 200's range, and the number counts down (or up depending on direction) in 0.5 increments between signs. They are about 18"x12" atop a 3 foot pole, and is standard motorway blue. South bound there is a letter B below the number, north bound it is A.
I thought that they were mileage posts at first, but they seem to be spaced at 1/3 mile intervals, although is probably a metric spacing as the odd one clocks in at 1/4 mile.
Any idea what they are for? Read more
I noticed this the last time I was up there. The posts have the same numbers on as the existing motorway markers (the ones you use when telling the recovery service where you are when you breakdown).
I assumed it was a newer more visible replacement.
I often wonder why cars have a badge on the rear announcing - provided that you get close enough - that this is a 3.5GLX/CDI/Turbo/4WD/Executive - you get the drift. My current Alamo barge is a 'Classic' model which announces to all who need to know that this is the bog standard bottom of the range model. Oh the shame!
Or you can specify your new Merc or BMW to have no rear badge, so you can drive an M5 and practice 'reverse snobbery.' However those knowledgeable enough to know about an M5 is will recognise the fat tyres, exhaust, and lowered suspension and those who think M5 is a ghastly UK motorway(well at its northern stretch) will be non the wiser anyway.
My point is that I know what I am driving - why is it necessary to tell others?

Hi,
I have just got my car back from having the clutch and slave cylinder replaced, at which time it seems the battery was disconnected. I don't know if this is linked to the problem I have now got, but is is a remarkable coincidence!
Anyhow the problem....
When accelerating the car loses all it's go as soon as the revs reach approx. 3700 rpm, which is very annoying, and very hard to understand. It's almost as if the engine is retarding itself, as the engine note changes quite a bit too.
Does anyone have any ideas why my car should suddenly start behaving in this way, when it was fine prior to the clutch change?
I would be welcoming of any ideas. Read more

Thanks for the reply to the thread no I did not sell you Sat Nav Bits but I bought a Garmin V from E Bay and was trying to buy a Sat Nav from an Elite into My CDX all the wires are there.
I contacted Vauxhall after I had got it working because my Local dealer gave me bum Info. But I gleaned enough info from the reply
the power comes from the central locking wire, car locked no power unlocked powered up if mirror is dimmed out at this point with ignition on and reverse selected it makes the mirror only darken slightly if you come back out of reverse and bright lights behind it darkens fully, hope it helps

Something else, ideas please!
A friend of Mrs Vansboy has an intermittent fault on his new Cupra.
Keeps not wanting to start, from cold or hot, call AA, 30 mins later, they come along & fires up OK.
Done this a few times, now & tonight it actually managed to NOT re-start, so it's again on its way back to the dealer.
They couldn't sort it before, so what do you think we should point them at?
Yhanks

Thanks Hugo,
Looks like they're blaming coil pacs.
VW type fault, IIRC!

Great car apart from a fright after 1000 miles from new.
On accelerating a bang from the engine occurred with almost complete loss of power and excessive smoke from the exhaust. I couldn't see the car behind.
I suspected a blown piston ring.
The AA man fixed it in 1 minute by replacing the air induction pipe to the Turbo unit that had blown off due to an insecure clip.
No problems since

Get your dealer to check the ecu fault codes. This incident may have been logged in the computer memory and might (only might) influence how the engine runs until the fault code has been cleared. In other words, the engine may not 'know' that the problem has been fixed.
Brilliant car, I had the 110bhp version and am very sorry I traded it for a Passat.
Made me smile!

Folks,
Would list members replace mineral gear oil with synthetic?
Any noise suppresion/leakage issues?
The XM at 76K is probably due a change. The wheel bearing noise I mentioned some time back sounds more like a very slight gear box noise. So slight that my local Citroen indie dismissed it as \"not something to worry about\". He has recommended Slick 50, but I would prefer a drain and decent oil.
Any feedback welcome.
Terry B, Andy Bairsto, any feedback on permissable XM transmission noise?
Cheers

OK half a litre!
I have a Vx Omega 2.5 V6 with an auto box.
I have the following problem where if I drive in sports mode I get a gearbox fault code flash up when the box should change up and doesn't. Vx say a code 41( Hydraulic fault) is stored.
Prior to me having the car it has had a recon unit within the last 6 mths.
Today I looked at the Transmission ID plate and found the following the AR25(gearbox type) Transmission Code is DG, Part No 96018044, A44(?), ---(?) and serial no or 5923718.
I have a copy of a VX tech & parts disc and it would seem that the gearbox fitted should only be fitted with the 2.0 engines.
The transmission code for the 2.5 V6 is BD.The part number relates to a 2.0 replacement box.
Is it normal for the 2.0 gearbox to be fitted to the 2.5 V6 when recon? What does the transmission code actually relate to and can this be changed when recon to a different code?. And lastly would the combination of this box and the correct transmission ECU cause the described fault?
Many thanks.

The gearbox must be matched to the engine characteristics - obviously the 2.0 and 2.6 have very different torque and power curves. Whilst the geartrain itself is likely to be the same, the valve bodies and ECU's will be different. The torque convertors will also be different.
I suspect you will have to go to a Vx dealer and present them with the engine and transmission codes to see if they are right for each other.
There have been many variants of the AR25 'box. It was used years ago on the Senators - there's no telling what you've got on your car.
Those too idle to park by Murgatroyds and walk up to Plane Trees Hill deserve to be booked!!
