Driving Fleet cars, is there an IT solution to identifying who was driving when?
We have a large pool of a cars at work, which are accessed by a lot of staff. Although they all have a "Log book" which drivers are supposed to fill in with times/dates/mileage most of them don't, and when we get the odd NIP for a GATSO, its really difficult to track down the driver, putting various people at risk of being prosecuted for not providing information on the driver.

Does anybody know of an IT solution, commercially available, which would enable us to identify the driver at any time of the day, maybe by a unique key or swipe card?

I doubt we can be the only organisation with this problem...........

M.M said,
There is another way though....establish a management structure that ensures the employee does fill in the log and respects the reason it is required."

Exactly!

that is what I meant by establishing the mindset of the whole organisation and others have repeated that sentiment in different ways below.

Until you do get the structure in place and people understanding what is required of them and, more importantly, why then such schemes are doomed to failure. It's important for them to understand the risks to the business and themselves as individuals.

I have a 1995 Citroen Synergie 1.9TD, it's due an MoT and I know it's going to fail the 'smoke test' due to the amount of black smoke it pukes out when revved hard and the vehicle is staionary. The car has been treated with injector cleaner quite regulary, it doesn't burn any oil and fuel economy is good.

The car has always seemed a bit gutless, and there is a noise from the turbo that sounds as if someone's left a window a bit open - the noise isn't too loud, but you can just hear it.

Taking all this into consideration, a local garage has diagnosed the black smoke problem as turbo failure, while another has said it's more likely to be a blockage somewhere causing back pressure (hence the noise from the turbo).

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance,
Eddie. Read more

My 1995 Citroen Synergie 1.9TD (70K miles) was due it's MOT, I knew it was going to fail the exhaust test (puked black smoke and laid down a sheet of carbon on the drive when revved hard).

Garage 1 thinks it's a failed turbo, Garage 2 think it's a blocked/very dirty exhaust pipe.

I take advice from this forum, change air filter/fuel filter, pour some Redex in the fuel tank and drive the car for 100 miles (took my daughters to the Zoo!). Soon as I get the car home, I revved it again, the black smoke was still evident but perhaps not quite so bad.

Today the car goes to Garage 2 for a check out and MoT (they don't MoT themselves). They said they'd taken the exhaust down and the Turbo was spinning but the car seemed gutless (no kick when the Turbo should cut in) and there is a noise from the turbo as if someone's left a window slightly open - but car PASSES the MoT!!???

There are loads of questions here, but what I'd really like to know is if there was a Turbo or Turbo related problem (Intercooler or Wastegate) could that cause the black smoke? and would the car still reach it's top speed and have good fuel consumption - which it does?

Oh, and how did it get through the MoT.....

My aplogies for a long post.

Eddie.

Anyone tried the DIY kits for windscreen chips from Halfords?
Got a big chip and my traders policy doesn't cover windscreens or repairs. Read more

Tried the Halfords kit. Worked on a couple of chips but not on others - for a while. The repairs that worked seem to have "worn off" over 2 yrs and the chips are as bad as before now.

I have a Galaxy TDI, my wife has a Scenic DTi. Both use fuel from the same pump at the same garage. Why do the exhaust gases smell different? The Renault's has a particularly distinctive whiff (and has done since new) which doesn't actually seem to change if a different brand of fuel is used, whereas I cannot really smell anything from the Gal, again irrespective of what brand of fuel I use. I think that both of these modern diesel vehicles will have catalysts - as all diesels from 1996-on (Some earlier..) have them.

Going to do the first oil change on a 2002 New Shape 1.8 Primera since i bought it 6 months ago and im not sure what type of oil is the best so could anyone with some knowledge on these cars recommend a good oil to use.

Anything from a 0W-30 to a 5W-40 should be fine (probably best with the former at this time of year). Use an SL-spec. fully synthetic - personally I like the GM stuff that Vauxhall dealers sell; I get it at a very good price.
Change the oil and filter regularly on these engines (say every six months) and they last for ever.

If you want detailed technical info (manfrs. oil specs, oil change proceedure etc) on this vehicle then mail me at:

Went to kwik fit for an oil change today, asked him to check for an oil leak as i was getting drops on the driveway, anyway he gets it on the ramp and says i would be better off getting the leak fixed before i got my oil changed.
So off i go to the local garage he puts it on the ramp and says it looks like the petrol pump and i would be looking at £200.00 to get it sorted. he also said that oil is comming tru my altinator, it just seems a bit expensive for an oil leak..? can anybody tell me if this is about what i should be paying....the car is a fiesta 1.8d Read more

The alternator is directly below the fuel injection pump on the Ford 1.8 - it wouldn't be good to have diesel fuel dripping onto/into it.

The FIP leak could be simply a loose connection of split hose or it could be a leaking stop solenoid. On the other hand, it could be a collapsed front bearing! £££££....

Run the engine and see if you can see any leaks - be careful of rotating belts and pullies, mind!

My wife's Renault Clio auto is changing gear a bit clonkily and I think that it needs the fluid topping up. The only problem is that there is no dipstick in the engine to check this, only a rubber stopper stuck into a tube that goes to the gearbox. Is this unusual or am I missing something. Have oil ready, but do not want to put it in blind.

thanks,

I have today serviced my sisters ford KA, but in doing the oil change, (which I hate doing, so I did it first) I came across a small problem. The oil filter is well and truely STUCK!! I've tried all manner of removal tools, even tried (as a very last resort) pushing a screwdriver through it to leaver it round with, all with little success! (I think it's moved about 1/4 of a turn!)

I now have a mangled oil filter still stick to the car!! If anyone's got any suggestions on how I may be able to remove it I'd be very grateful!!

Having serviced many cars in my life, I will not be defeated by this one!!

Hi Mike,
As another last resort, if the filter casing splits/mangles/whatever, try getting what you can off of the filter. Then try a Dremel multi or similar on the part of the filter that has the rubber seal on it, a few small cuts will significantly weaken the seal, then you should be able to unscrew the filter, this is all access permitting of course.

Hope this helps, Pastyman.....
