Hello all. I browse this forum all the time and learn a lot here. Could someone please advise? If a driver is reversing and hits the side of another car, do insurance companies consider it in the same way as they would if he/she had driven forward into the back of another car i.e. he/she is is at fault and must bear liability for the collision. Any advice appreciated, thanks. Read more
Hmm... a friend was in a similar situation in Tesco's - that was on camera but due to the Data Protection Act (I think!) they wouldn't show her the security tapes. They will release them to the insurance company, though.
Seen recently on the South Luzon Tollway..

"a range of real prices that's about as close to market rate as you'll get"....I would agree, but bear in mind that these are the cars that HAVEN'T sold so maybe over-priced!! :-)
Seriously, this HAS to be the most reliable way of evaluating a car...
With winter coming on, does anyone know of an anti-mist product that works well on the inside's of windows. I have tried Holts and Rain-ex in the past and they are *@~#£$* useless. Read more
Get a £10 fan heater and a 230V extension cable.
Run it inside the car 10mins before you want to set
off. No mist and no frost on the glass.
You can actually buy 12v fan heaters that sit on the dash and plug into your cig lighter socket. I got one off Ebay last year for the daughter's metro it takes a little time to warm up but works and you can swivel it round to keep you warm until the engine warms up too.
I have a 99 Passat, 1.8T. A month ago I handed it into a VW garage for a service and since then my fuel consumption has dropped from about 28mpg, pre service, to 22mpg now. Nothing has changed to warrant such a decline in mpg. VW says there is no reported fault so there's not a lot they can do. Somehow I found that reply less than satisfactory, rightly or otherwise.
I used to have a 3 litre Omega which done me 20mpg and so the Passat's 22mpg is totally not on.
The other problem I've had for a long time now is the temp gauge is irratic. I posted here before and it was suggested the temp sender unit may be faulty. Again, VW have checked the car out and say everything is ok. Temp sender is fine, so the problem is a mystery.
I also had a leaking heater matrix which I had replaced and for about a week the temp needle behaved itself, but soon after it went back to jumping between zero and half.
I'm stumped! Got no idea what to do about either problem suffice to say the fuel economy is upsetting and the temp needle problem is an annoyance. Can anyone make some suggestions as to why the fuel eco or temp gauge are the way they are; since VW can't answer the question. Maybe I can get some ideas and go back to them or some other garage and have then check out a few things.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thx.

The link as I see it between higher fuel consumption and an erratic temperature gauge is the engine coolant thermostat. If this is causing the engine to run too cool, a definite increase in consumption will be the result. I believe VW have had problems with thermostats in some models, possibly as a result of their "get it cheaper from Eastern Europe" policy.

I have recently taken delivery of a new celica with six speed box..I find it very difficult to engage third gear esp when the car is cold. in fact all the gears are stiff! The car has 850 miles on the clock
The dealer has said that will will run in after a few months..is that likely or are they having me on.
I have never heard of new boxes being stiff?
Thanks

For goodness sake, insist your dealers looks at this - I wish I had ! And don't be put of by that 'it get's better' nonsense - it doesn't !
In our increasingly litigious world, we hear all too often about "Cowboy traders". Thousands of column inches and scores of "watchdog" type programmes are devoted to them and their poor, downtrodden victims. But what about Cowboy customers ? ie Those who actually get "what it says on the tin", use it, abuse it, get more than their money's worth and then have the gall to dream up or manufacture a complaint/defect and try to screw the supplier ? Yes, I'm certain various motor manufacturers and dealers get what they deserve but I'm also sure there are plenty out there operating in good faith who often have to suffer the moans and groans of these cowboy customers who deserve nothing but being shown the way to the exit door. I have experience of these merchants but not in the motor trade. Thoughts anyone ? Read more
"Cowboy customers" are a big problem in insurance. Too many people think it's a victimless crime to "inflate" their claim. The result: higher premiums and agressive loss adjusters probing the innocent and guilty alike.
Just got hold of a rover metro 1.1s, it has no power! When i accelerate, all i get is high reves and no umph! It struggles in all gears! It was OK on the motorway at the weekend (250miles)I was told it drives like a tank...but is this normal? (Limited motor knowledge!)Cheers! Read more
I know this sounds contradictory but the self adjusting clutch cable can be adjusted. If you remove the clip that holds the self adjuster and spring to the bulkhead then push the cable in and then pull it out and refit the clip this releases the cable a little (it may be stuck). The other adjustable bit, if it's an A-series not K-series engine, is the big locknut on the end of the clutch bellhousing. Check the clearance between the nut and the bellhousing, I can't remember the figures but it's probably in the workshop manual somewhere. If neither of these two fixes work then it's a new clutch I'm afraid.;-(
Check out the map on the website; the train station looks just as convenient as it is at Gatwick. If you can't resist driving, you could go up to Milton Keynes, Rugby or other intermediate station and park you car there.
