Question Memory Savers
Andrew Scott

I am planning to change the coolent and thermostat on my Fiesta Zetec 1.25. To do this I need to remove the alternator, and of course disconnect the battery.

I have heard that memory saving devices are available to save the cars ECU settings. Are they really necessary? and if so what devices are available to the DIY\'er?

Your advice please.

Regards

As long as you have your radio code this is the procedure for the Power Control Module to reset itself:

When the battery has been disconnected and connected, the stored idle and drive values contained within the powertrain control module (PCM) will have been erased. The following steps must be carried out to allow the PCM to relearn its idle and drive values:

· Start and run the engine at idle for three minutes.

· When the engine reaches normal operating temperature, increase the engine speed to 1200 rpm and maintain for approximately two minutes.

· Drive the vehicle for approximately five miles of varied driving.

I want to buy a front strut brace for my Nissan QX (they are alleged to improve handling). There are plenty from sale on the US Ebay site, mostly priced between $8-$20. The snag is that the few vendors I've contacted want about £30-40 for shipping to England. This is not a heavy item - basically its an alloy tube with a 'horseshoe' bracket at each end.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get one shipped over more cheaply? Anyone have any contacts in the US that know how to get stuff to England at reasonable cost? Read more

Sure three will triangulate you to within 50-100 yards ok but no 3d lock, for keeping track during rapid movement to within 20 yards the more the better.

Hi, I would like to be able to fit some genuine vauxhall fog lights to my car and have two main queries:

1. Does anyone know if there is a part oof the plastic grille which can be specifically removed to house the lights.

2. I'm assuming there is wiring behind the current blanking plate to the bumper to fit the lights?

Thanks in advance.

Please can anyone offer advice to someone with virtually no technical knowledge of cars. I have had a Xsara 2.0 HDI from new (March 02) and now have 37k on the clock. It has been serviced at the approved intervals (last one in August 03)and I am a generally not bad driver. (I have driven diesels for years and have had cars that have exceeded 100k with no engine problems) For the last month the car has started making very weird noises at low revs. It usually happens when the engine is cold and I am in first or second gear and when decelerating (declutching?)when it sounds as if the chain has come of a bike (for want of a better description) and occasionally accompanied by very high pitched squeal. In addition to this in general driving the engine feels like it has been really thrashed - and it hasn't.

Has anyone else come across a similar problem either with a Xsara or other diesel?

I am booked in to the garage on Friday for them to have a look - but would like some background information before then if possible.

Thanks Read more

A neighbour recently had a very similar-sounding noise on his 205 diesel. It really did sound like something very nasty indeed, but turned out to be only the bearing in the auxiliary drive belt auto-tensioner. But, very definitely, get it investigated ASAP.

Does anyone know if you should be able to get a discount on your insurance premium if your convictions have run out (over 4 yrs it says in the dvla) in the middle of the policy? Read more

smokie

IIRC convictions may have expired for legal purposes, but some insurance can ask for details going back 7 or 8 years.

And no, I can't imagine an insurance company giving a refund in such circumstances. Worth a try though.

I have an opportunity to buy a 1997 Prelude Type-S, Japanese import.

(Nutter spec, 2.2 VTEC, 230bhp, 0-60 in 6 seconds, 150mph top end, you know the drill.)

75000 miles, unmodified from original spec, excellent overall condition, all proper documentation tracking it right the way back to Japan, was imported to the UK in 1999.

As far as I can tell the car is clean, both in terms of its history and the condition it's in now.

The current owner has had it for two years, he's changed the oil every six months, changed the plugs and other routine jobs - he's had nothing whatsoever go wrong with it.

Thing is, even with Honda's build quality, I'm a bit nervous about buying a six year old sports car - I suppose there could be a lot of expensive stuff waiting to go wrong, but on the other hand it is a lovely motor.

Does anyone have any experience of these? Any opinions? Any advice?

The asking price is £6750.

Thanks. Read more

captain zippy,
i knew you'd like it, but i have a sneaky feeling you had already made up your mind when you first posted! :).
you did well to get it down to £6300, so snap it up - and hit that mountain!
enjoy.

Anyone know what gearbox Rover fit to the 25 diesel? Is it the same as the petrol models, i.e. originally a Peugeot designed box? Read more

DL

Its the Honda PG2 gearbox, a development of the PG1
Pretty reliable unit until the miles rack up, then the diff gives trouble.

You know the ones I mean.

More often than not, the guilty party is a sharp suited businessman in a powerful german saloon who swerves across three lanes of traffic to take a motorway exit.

Apologies if this has already been done to death previously, but I feel the need to vent my spleen. One of these idiots caused me to brake hard to (narrowly) avoid him this morning. I can't think of a motorway junction which isn't signed at 1 mile, 1/2 mile, 300/200/100 yards, so why do they do it? Is it simply a spectacular lack of awareness?

Baffled,

And how many of these are caused by Joe Bloggs being so totally engrossed in their telephone conversation, that awareness of the outside world, including junction planning and knowing where they are, has dropped to 0.001% of active brain capacity?

I posted a week or so back about a Swedish colleague whose driving frightened the life out of me when he was on the phone (including a VERY last minute slip road dive), but which was sane and normal the instant he hung up.

Hi,

Does anyone on this board know of garage or similar, in the Bournemouth area, who isn't a Ford main dealer, and is able to read and interogate a FORD EECV ECU whilst the vehicle is in motion?

I'd welcome any help / suggestions!
