What would be a rough value for a Land Rover Defender 90 2.5d T/Cab April 1997, circa 65k miles? Poor to Fair condition.

Can't find a web site that values "vans" for free.

Thanks in advance Read more

Hi,

I've had problems with a Volvo D5, story is in Discussion. I've now heard from the dealer who is unsure as to what the situation is.

Basically I had problems starting, to the extent the car wouldn't start.
They swapped the Fuel pump and gave the car back.
It failed again after 1200 miles and a few days. Another fuel pump, and it still wont start, so now they've swapped the fuel injectors, and it appears OK and they want me to pick it up.

But, the fuel injectors had not failed. They were still within tolerance.

They admit they don't know what as caused the problem and can't give any guarentee that it won't happen again.

So far they have spent about £4,000 plus labour to investigate the problem and the car as been off the road for 10 days.

Any idea on what the problem could be, How sensible the fix is and any other tips on the approach I should take with the dealer. I've already asked about them giving me a free extended warranty.

Old pump broke up internally and deposited bits inside injectors??

Hey

Thanks to everyone who tried to help with my brakes.... I do still have the same problem though.

Does anyone know what would cause one of these things to kick out white smoke on startup?

Every time it's started (Especially when cold) it runs really rough for about 5-10 seconds and spits a cloud of white smoke out. Not a huge amount of smoke but enough to get me worried. Also it doesn't feel quite as quick as it once was... doesn't always have the same kick when the turbo cuts in but sometimes does.

I've changed the glow plugs, done all the usuall oil and filter changes and it's just had a new battery.

One odd thing I noticed was that one of the old glow plugs either had a build up of carbon around it or it had expanded (Swolen up) in one place. Imagine a pen with a ruber band wrapped around it several times and overlapping itself... well the outline of the plug was the same as the outline to that pen (Hope that makes sense)

Cheers

I bought a Capri for £500, and I was told by the private seller it had no mechanical faults. I drove it home 30 miles and the next day after 3 miles the diff failed. I know it was only £500 and it had done 93,000 miles but I feel I was misled. Has anyone got any advice or guidance on tactics that might get me my £500 back or at least some of it ?
The seller told me he felt responsible, but after speaking to the AA, has refused to discuss it with me any more, and says he is not liable.
Thanks Read more

When you say the diff has failed, please can I ask exactly what you mean? Do you mean that it has failed completely, or just that it's a bit more noisy than you would have liked it to have been? If it's the latter then, quite frankly, I think you are worrying about nothing.

I would also be interested to learn which Capri you have. I have heard that the diff's on the 2.8i are known to give problems, but the diff on my 1.6 did 255,000 miles and was still good at this mileage when I scrapped the car. They go on for ever!

A car for £500? You buy as seen, as someone has already said. Caevat Emptor, or something like that!

Good Luck, anyway.

"A collision between an 87-seater bus and a truck in the Karoo in the early hours of Thursday morning left at least 21 dead, Western Cape emergency services said."

Yep, and guess who was on that road yesterday?
within 30kms of leaving, I was almost head-onned by a truck overtaking on a blind rise...
Then I caught up to three trucks doing well over the limit, playing overtaking games ... with a speed differential of about 3km/h...
How many traffic cops did I see over 450kms? No prizes for guessing...

I've been a way for a few days, taking SWMBO and the kiddies to her family, in a delightful town called Beaufort West, 450kms from home...
On the way back, we turned off the main road to Matjiesfontein [history note -During the Anglo-Boer War (1899 to 1902)Matjiesfontein served the British as a military stronghold.]
There, lo and behold, parked up was a great big red routemaster bus!
The kids, who are great fans of Wheels on the Bus, thought this was the greatest thing they've ever seen, and clambered all over it, rang the bell, made brmm brmm noises etc.
I looked inside, and discovered that for only 35p, you could buy a ticket for unlimited travel on london busses for a day. (Probably cost you a fiver today...]
I'm still trying to figure out why anybody would buy a routemaster, ship it to africa, and then park it in the middle of nowhere ...
Anybody seen any other equally out-of-place vehicles? Read more

There's also a red "London" bus used as a static ticket office in downtown Denver, Colorado. Actually, it's a Bristol bus but they don't know that :o)

I will soon be needing to hire an MPV, and telephone calls to the big companies around here have produced very disappointing results (ie having to pay to have the car on a Sunday even though I don't need it, because they don't open to let me return it).

I found a company based in Bexley called Shoestring Rentals who rent out imported Toyota Lucidas. They seem to fit the bill perfectly, but I am a little worried - a case of too good to be true?

If any of you have had any experience of this company (good or bad), please let me know. Obviously the good can be posted here, but any criticisms should be directed to the e-mail address in my profile, please.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

I agree with you about the website. The opening paragraph is very disarming.. "if you wanted pretty moving pictures instead of a lower telephone bill (and car rental bill) you wouldn?t be looking for a firm called Shoestring - would you?"

As long as you know what the charges will be up front, and the vehicle isn't a complete heap, then I fail to see the objection.

You can't borrow a bus, I suppose? :-)

Hi there,

I currently drive a 94 Citroen Xantia 1.9TD. I'm looking to buy a 98 Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X as my next car.

I'm just wondering how 'different' the 2.0 will be compared to my 1.9TD. I've checked the figures etc, which state the 2.0 is faster 30-70 than my Xantia, it's considerably faster 0-60 etc, but I'm just wondering about real-world conditions. I like the fact I can acclerate in almost any gear without having to worry about changing down. Will I be able to do this with a 2.0?

Economy aside (It isn't really an issue as I only do 5000 miles a year), will I regret moving to petrol? Read more

The biggest thing you will notice is that you don't notice the engine at idle. You'll wonder whether you remembered to start the car! A 2 litre petrol engine is a pretty good choice as it should have the oomph to accelerate in most gears. You will find the 'sweet spot' for each gear and each speed will be further up the rev range. If you are travelling at 30 and wanted to accelerate anything other than gently then knocking it down to 3rd would be better than putting your foot down hard in 4th and waiting for it to pick up. 16v engines seem to be more sluggish at lower revs but I don't know whether the ford is 16 or 8v. If it is the latter it might be less noticeable.

Enjoy the silence but getting heavy with the right foot will lead to 30 mpg econonmy or worse on short trips.

Anyone familiar with the accord 4 speed semi auto's?

Thinking of buying one.... but would like opinions on usefullness of the semi auto option and overall drive as an automatic.

Never been a fan of auto's but now I'm getting on a bit and stuck in city traffic 50% of the time I think it may be time to cross over.

Thanks in advance

I have a 2 litre V reg executive - I paid £8k from a dealer last year which was not cheap but I love the car. It looks good, is very reliable and is good to drive.

The semi automatic gearbox works well. The car has 148bhp which you don't feel in normal auto mode but if you want to "press on" using the semi auto gear box makes the car pretty quick.
