Dude - {P}

Just out of interest just wondered how old some of my friends are here in the B.R.

I guess I must be one of the oldest here at 61, but am still enjoying my motoring, and most certainly not ready for the zimmer yet. !!! Read more

That's a great link, unfortunately my age isn't in it!

I have a 2003 model V70 D5 which was first registered Sept 2002.

For the past couple of weeks starting as become more of a problem, it taking a few seconds to start, and more recently I've been using the accelerator while starting to get it to 'fire'.

However yesterday morning it didn't start at all. I called the dealer for advice, and all they could offer was to take the car in under warranty and they would look at it.

So the car was recovered, and I was given a hire car under warranty.

I've not heard anything about my car. I've checked with Volvo confirming there are no outstanding recalls.

Over the phone the Volvo mechanic suspected the Diesal pump which hes known to fail on other D5 engines.

Does anyone know of any problems with the D5?
Is it becoming normal not to be able to do anything to modern cars without a diagnosis computer?
When should I chase the Volvo dealer about progress? What is reasonable?

cheers

Typical: change the most expensive thing first! Have they considered other more mundane possibilities? glow-plugs, air in the line, blocked filter, all of which are possible faults. Another tack would be to call in a Volvo technician, as this is all very odd, not to say expensive!

Reading several threads reently on cambelts gets me thinking..... with a low annual mileage, about 6000, and recommended belt change at 4 years or 40,000 miles, is it realy necessary? How long could I go before changing the belt - not really stretching things (no pun intended) but as the cost of changing one is going to be over £300 (ouch) and this is about the total I would usually pay for 2 years of maintenance, it seems an excessive cost for a part that would not appear to wear unduly.
Now, if some belts can be lifed at 72,000 miles or more, would I be reasonably safe to go for, say 6 years and 36,000 miles before changing? Car is garaged at night, so no frost damage or excessive condensation to worry about. What is/are the time-related factor(s) to consider?
Any thoughts? Read more

If you are at all unsure, then please leave it to the experts. You will probably need special locking/locating tools; without these the job is very fiddly if not impossible.

My advice? Shop around for quotes.....you might be suprised.

Can anyone give me any advise on the best course of action?
I have a 1.8 Mondeo TD (which I have only had for 3 weeks), and this morning I got in as normal to go to work when the cam belt snapped. I moved a grand total of about 3 inches! A friend of mine had a look with me and rightly diagnosed a snapped cam belt.
Now, I am aware of the perils of snapped cam belts and what can happen to your valves etc, but I am not sure what to do. Should I get the belt replaced and HOPE the valves are OK or would this be a complete waste of time? The friend said that I MAY be lucky as the car was not travelling and there was no clattering noise that he would usually associate with valve damage (the snap of the belt was all I heard).
I am willing to get the belt replaced if there is a reasonable chance that it will be OK but I can't afford to keep throwing money at it if the chances are slim.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Guys, thanks for all your replies and ideas, will try and give some of them a go,

My wife has an Audi S3 which she needs for work every day. On Friday she noticed the indicators were only working intermittently, then latterly not at all. Saturday morning I phone the Audi service department (it's still under warranty), take it in and they announce it needs a new switch which of course isn't in stock. So Tuesday until they get it, Thursday until my wife can get there to get it fitted. You can predict my question is (hopefully not tempting fate)what is the legal position here if an accident occurs as a result of not indicating. I assume it would be my wife's 'fault' in driving without effective indicators, but given it physically couldn't be fixed until Tuesday does Audi have any duty here, even if only down to 'you musn't drive it until repaired' or even (we're talking fairy-tail land) 'you musn't drive it and please use our courtesy car until it's fixed.'

I'd plump for France, about halfway down, far enough south for decent weather but not so far south that the attitude is too laid back, which is fine on holiday but not so great when you need a plumber in a hurry.
If you are retiring you'll be in the pleasant position of being able to enjoy the excellent publically-funded road and rail networks without having to pay for it (except the tolls). Not to mention the excellent health service although you will need some medical insurance.
Also be aware of the implications of french inheritance laws, very different to here, as is the tax system.
It's worth going just for the wonderful food and wine, the french seem to take such things much more seriously than just about anyone else.
Let us know if you take the plunge, and can I come and stay? Everyone else will want to!

Hi all,

How do you deal insurance-wise with people wanting to "test drive" a car you are privately selling?

I would not want someone driving my car without them being comprehensively insured, and putting them on my insurance will cost money, which could be wasted if they're just a tyre-kicker/dreamer.

Any ideas?

just ring your insurance company and get it done over the phone when they turn up for the TD. If they're serious they wont mind paying for it, but knock it off the price if they buy the car.

Police priorities

When ?er in doors discovered that our car was broken into one Sunday on her staff car park she called the Police, who said they would come and take a look.

She then phoned me.

45 mins later, the Police had not arrived {0.7 miles from police station to car park}, so I drove down in the othet car to see.

A street away from my wife?s work, I saw a police car, the PC had got out and was booking a car parked on double yellow lines.

I got to my wife?s work and survey the damage ? in the end cost about £350 to fix.
Anyway ? soon the Police arrive ? the same PC as I had just seen booking the car on the yellow line.

He apologised for taking so long as he ?had been to a break-in?. No doubt from his training, he knew not to say that he had been booking cars on yellow lines

He gave us a crime number and went ? end of investigation - no finger printing ? no hope of a result ? {no CCTV either}

Car parked on yellows ? result for the Police

£350 crime taken place ? not worth any effort.

Saw a superb example of getting their priorities wrong today. I shared Court with a Community Officer who calculated he had spent nearly 6 working days (about 60 hours) bringing a person to book. He had to fight to get the case brought by the CPS. Produce a file the size of a mountain and nag other apathetic other agencies for their help. Oh yes it was a persistant Offender finally getting his come uppance and an Anti-Social Behaviour Order. Interesting this offender had no motoring offences and quite possibly has never touched the wheel of a car. It would have been far easier for this guy to stand at the road side picking off speeding motorists (yes he is trained to do that as well) and tick a few PIs off. The great unreported effort that actually goes on to Policing our communities - mind you it isn't fashionable to actually praise the Police is it !
