Hi,

I have a 95 Cav 1.8Lsi, 139k, had new disks and pads approx 6 months ago, shortly after fitting I noticed a noise similar to when pads have worn completely and its metal on metal only on the left hand side. The noise does not appear when braking at speed eg slowing on a motorway of speeds 60/70mph or when braking hard eg if someone pulls out on you, it happens when gently braking from 20 to stop. It doesn't happen everytime, but it doesn't appear to be temperature driven. The brakes work fine and I've had the wheel off nothing suspect looking. There appears to be marginally more wear on the insides (engine side) of the discs, this is the same for the other side.

I admit the pads weren't quality items and I'm up for changing them to a decent brand, but any ideas?

It's most likely pad squeal. Whip the pads out again, clean the back of them, clean the piston faces, and all round the caliper (do not breathe the dust in!), particularly where any parts meet. Apply a LIGHT smear of copper based grease or high melting point grease to the BACK of the pads and reassemble. All should be quiet now.

Offset wear is not unusal in modern cars tht use single pistons and sliding calipers. The side with the piston sees more wear than the side without.

Hi;
Have only just found HJ website.
Can any one tell me if their is a diffrence from useing BP petrol or switching to Jet , Are they all the same ? I can take a slight detour on my way back from work and fill up with Shell but this is more expensive. Read more

Usually I stick to Texaco - this is due chiefly to the fact that I pass thru' Corby (Northants) everyday on way to/from work and it's cheaper than the local Supermarket by about 2/3p a litre.

However... (TRishaTR stands back ever-so-carefully bludgeons a hole into a hornets nests)..... on the last two occasions I've filled up with Shell Optimax, and I have to say I've noticed a significant improvement in performance. It's too early to say about MPG - I'd measure this over about 4 tankfuls. Even with the added performance boost I'm not sure it warrants the 3/4p a litre extra.

From what I've read on this forum and fordmondeo.org I've been convinced that the Mondeo TDCi has a "tip in, tip out" bug at 1500-2000 rpm when feathering the throttle.
A new firmware upgrade improved matters but it's still not perfect.

What I would be interested to hear is if this firmware bug affect both versions of the mondeo (115PS and 130PS). Also does it affect the FOCUS 115PS TDCi?

It's looking unlikely that I'm going to go for the focus as the Mondy is only a few notes more but it is still on my list!

Thanks in advance! Read more

This weekend a contributor to the Mondeo enthusiasts Group forum has told us that Delphi,(who make the TDCi injection and management system) have identified excessive back leakage from the injectors as the cause of misfires in the Ford TDCi range. He says that in the last couple of weeks Delphi have produced a test kit to diagnose this fault. Anyone know if this information has filtered down to the Ford dealerships yet?

I am looking to buy an older upmarket car for about £10-£12k. It's a make known for expensive bits and services if things go wrong, but that's a price I'm prepared to pay. I've found a dealer who offers these at two prices, details below. The difference between the two prices is usually £1500 to £2000, whether the price is £6,000 or £26,000.

I'm interested to know what people think of the options. I'm not particularly mechanically minded myself.

"We normally have two prices.
The retail price and the cheap price.
The Retail price: At the retail price we send the car away to a good specialist, ask them to service the car and look for faults that need correcting. We then correct those faults and stand by the car for 3 months or 3,000 miles to make sure nothing was missed in the service. This standing by the car doesn?t just cover things breaking, it covers wear and tear items as well - but no, not petrol! We can put extended warranties on the cars for up to 4 years with the claim limit being the value of the car (not the usual £500 or £1,000).
We use people totally independent to us who themselves have exemplary reputations. We are the only car dealers they have come across who spend the necessary amount on car services and repairs - their words not ours. We give no limits to amounts available for servicing, no instructions to "turn a blind eye," and understand why jobs have to be done and what they cost. Sure if a car is 20 years old we are clearly not going to revert it to "as new" condition but we listen carefully to their recommendations and act on their advice.
The Cheap price: The cheap price is for the car exactly as it stands, no guarantee, no pre-sales service, nothing. You are guaranteed clean title to the car in terms of ownership but that is it. We make no exceptions. If the engine blows up on the way home then we will advise you on the best way to go but not dip into our pocket to effect a repair. Do remember though that you are buying the very same car which we are happy to put in for a service and then stand by.
The third way: There is a third way to buy a car from us. You can pay the cheap price and then get us to service the car on your behalf. You pay for the service at cost to us. From then on you are on your own. The money saved will have to go towards putting anything right that happens within the Three months or 3,000 miles we would have stood by the car at the retail price. To take the risk out for you, should the service bill exceed the difference between the Cheap and Retail prices we will step in, pay the excess and revert the sale to a retail sale. In other words your maximum liability is the retail price.

There is no ulterior motive behind offering cars in this way. Different people want to buy cars in different ways with varying degrees of hand holding, this allows us to cater for everyone. Take the car however you like with as much or as little work done to it for you."

"Since the company has now been identified, a pity really...."

Not really - it's not a "name and shame" situation is it.
It's an interesting site for Porsches, plus they are a good bunch.

I just whiled away a few minutes taking a couple of mock theory tests (as you do).

They seemed really easy, but in each case I only scored 25 out of 35 points, and the minimum pass mark is 30 points.

I agree actually, what I meant to say was that it should be as soon as the other driver pulls ahead, as late as possible without dazzling. Of the two, I chose the wrong one as the best compromise.

Anyway, given that I don't drive any heavy vehicles, it's unlikely that I'd get overtaken in that scenario by someone driving sensibly within the speed limit.

Can anyone recommend a magazine that specialises in Audis that would be available from "your local high street newsagent".

Audi does indeed do its own glossy mag which is a kind of product and lifestyle publication. Think it might be quarterly judging by the number of times it's dropped on my desk, but it isn't available in newsgagents. Dealers probably have copies and I'm sure they'll put you on the subscription list for the price of an A6!

Very well produced and uses writers like Phil Llewellyn, who's always a good read.

Not really for used Audi enthusiasts/DiY spanners though.

Looking at buying a new Santa Fe. Here are some questions:

1. Which one - 2.0TD or 2.4 petrol (given an approx annual mileage of 20,000 incl 10,000 business miles at 40p per mile)

2. What sort of deal should I get as a trade in with a 306 1.4 LX 2000 X, with 52,000 on the clock. I'm looking at a PCP-type deal, or possible a loan with a deferred amount. Any one offer any advice on these deals?

3. Does anyone know of any decent Hyundai dealers somewhere in the North of England?

Any assistance much appreciated.... Read more

If looking at the Santa Fe, have you also considered the Kia Sorrento? That's if you can find one - apparently they sold like hot cakes after launch.

And on the subject of Kias, I hear that they're doing the Shuma 1.6 at £7995 (after £1000 cashback), and the 2 litre Magentis at just£9995, a Mondeo-sized car which virtually every review seems to grudgingly conclude is 'actually quite good'.
What's more, you can get it for £1 deposit.

(No I don't work for Kia!)

Sounds like a gearbox bearing? Oil change won't fix that.
Not being that conversant with Vauxhalls, I'm not the best one to ask on this, it might be something completely different.

Hi all,

The time has come to sort out my ailing 220 Turbo Coupe (1995). Does anyone know of a reputable reconditioned engine company, ideally one who will not only supply but also fit a recond. engine?

Cheers
