When I recently asked a Toyota salesman if the engine of the new Avensis had a rubber belt driven camshaft, he replied that with the exception of the Yaris diesel, ALL Toyota's now had chain driven camshafts.
Can anyone confirm this please? Read more

Many thanks MB.

Hello, wonder if anybody can help with a problem thats got my garage baffled and me going crazy!

Vehicle:
Vauxhall Monterey 3.2 Petrol Auto Diamond LWB. 1996 (N) 92,000. Converted to LPG. Towbar fitted and certainly used by previous owner

Problem:
Vibration, shudder, thrash, rhythmic knocking or throbbing in transmission on take off and at low speeds.
Appears to come from beneath driver seat/to rear of car but can also be felt slightly in steering.
Worse when moving off slowly and much worse when hot, but no vibration at speed.
Whine from transmission Under Power ONLY, and at all speeds. Disappears on the over-run.
Note: Auto box has been checked electronically, changes correctly, and as smoothly as a 92K example can be expected.

Tests/Action so far:
Auto transmission fluid changed (as far as is possible). Colour was much darker red than the new, but I guess it had never been done. Levels carefully checked. No change.
Propshaft examined by garage (and me). No obvious signs of wear at all. UJ?s and splines greased, again probably for the first time! No change.
Back axle oil drained and refilled. Whine greatly reduced. Vibration remains.
Transfer box drained and refilled. No change..
With auto in Drive, handbrake on and footbrake applied, applying gentle revs does NOT cause any judder.
Any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance,

Any opinions on whether buying a main dealers demonstrater is good sense or not?

you get a nearly new car with a few thousand miles for a good price?

However, you might expect demonstraters to get thrashed as potential buyers try to find the limits of the car etc.

Any recomendations on what to look for? Any preventative measures to try and bring the car back into the norm?

Yes, just ask to see the V5. If the seller has nothing to hide they will gladly show you. If they won't let you see it or make some feeble excuse draw your own conclusions. I don't know whether this still happens, but rental companies were in the habit of registering their cars in the names of directors to make them look private.

I noticed in my owners manual last night that Volvo do a pre-heater for the V70. I can't find any other reference to this.

Can anyone point me at more info?
Does anyone have a Volvo Pre-Heater?
Is it a dealer fit extra?
How much was it?

I assume it to be a Webasto fuel burning unit with the Volvo name on it.

Does anyone know if Volvo come with part of it already installed, so it's only slightly more to add to this to make it a full pre-heater? This is on a 2003 D5 car.

thanks for any help.

Question Sharan brakes
cabsmanuk

My 1998 Sharan has an annoying hissing noise coming from the brake pedal for the last couple of years. It?s present most of the time but not all the time. A slight depression of the pedal stops the hissing. Braking is not affected and the car has just passed it?s MOT. The noise comes from very close to the pedal and is obviously something to do with the servo vacuum. The same thing happened to my last car a Sierra which had the noise for 4 years. Any Ideas? Had exactly the same on an Alhambra a while back.
Eventually found a small hole had worn in the feed pipe to the servo across the top of the engine, close to the bulkhead.
With the bonnet open carefully run your hand along the servo feed pipe to check for escaping air.
Mine flexed slightly when applying the brakes so pushing the pipe against the bulkhead and sealing the hole! This meant that the noise disappeared when applying the brakes.
Hope this helps.

I had 4 new tyres fitted yesterday.

When I drove from the garage, the car veered to the left when braking. As soon as the brake was released, it drove straight again. It?s a bit like losing control on a patch of ice.

The steering wheel doesn?t pull at all.

The car drives straight on a flat road.

I?m going back to the tyre fitter later today, but not being mechanically minded, does anyone have any suggestions so that I don?t get fobbed off?

Cheers

Dave

Ian L, can I ask how you know if the nuts were over tightened?

Question Glow Plugs
Timoshanko

Is there a DIY method to test a diesel engine glow plug for failure I take it they must be removed from the engine block for this

Good advice Dizzy, The some of the plugs have an inherent PTC Resistor ( Positive Temperature Coeffient ) tesistor which due to the metal work heat sink effect remains initially cool compared to the low resistance heater element 1 to 2 ohms. As the PTC resister heats it it rapidly increases in resistance and shuts the glow plug down. And yes to test them in the car apply a test meter and they should be very low resistance 1 to 2 ohms when cold If toy have a high current range on your meter you could power them up one at a time straight from the battery with the meter in circuit at least a 10 amp range. Initially you will see a high current and within 10 seconds you should see this fall off quite rapidly. Regards Peter.

Dipstick

After watching the faintly entertaining Right Car Wrong Car last night, it occurred to me that there may be lots of half programmes lying about on the cutting room floor.

What happens if they set it all up, film the reaction of the punter to the cars, wander off to the dealer, do all the hidden camera negotiations, come to a deal - and the dealer says "forget it, I'm not having that hidden footage broadcast on national tv thank you very much"? For the new cars you could go to another dealer and go through the ridiculous charade again, but not for the secondhand ones.

Any car dealer that appears on the programme will no doubt by innundated with customers trying to get the same deal as the one being filmed for RCWC. Free Advertising are all it would take to get dealers to agree, unless of course they are on some FBI wanted list or being chased by the CSA ;)
