Does anyone know of a device which could be fitted to my car (1996 Volvo 440) which would prevent me exceeding the speed limit. Ideally I would like something which could be changed to suit the various limits, not just activated for 30mph zones. I understand that some devices which are being sold require the vehicle to have a pulse speed wire and my car doesn't have one.
Any ideas?

I've a noise coming from my j reg.BMW. It sounds like a sowing machine or a lollipop stick clicking against bicycle spokes!! It happens when i press the accelerator pedal when driving along but if i feather back the pedal and catch the revs as they fall back the noise stops, only to start up again when i press the pedal down further and so on.Any thoughts on what it could be before i take it to a garage to be checked out?

notlob,
Despite the good description you gave, it's very difficult to *visualise* the noise without actually hearing it.
As I'm sure you know, your M40 engine has a timing belt, not a chain, and I wonder if the noise you can hear is the belt slapping under certain speed/load conditions. Perhaps the belt tensioning isn't correct or it needs changing?
I seem to recall that the US Fuzz have an electronic gadget that can disable engine management systems from a distance. These are used to stop errant vehicles without running them off the road.
Anybody know any more?
Please can I have one.
Would it be legal to use on the baseball capped b*****ds who persist in passing my home at 70+ (yes it is a 30 Limit)

mutterer,
I don't know if it would work in your road - but in the 70s we had something that could kill (mainly the male population) without damage to cars or property.
It was called a 13% mortgage rate...

Hi, I have a renault clio 1.4rt 1994 model & when it is running as the revs get to around 2000rpm the engine seems to die. But if the accelerator is pressed the engine responds. The only things I think the problem could be is either the throttle stepper motor or the throttle position sensor. Any input would be appreciated. Read more
It is happening at around 2000 Rpm in any gear but it is always at very light pedal pressure. Often at speeds under or around 2000 rpm the engine seems to waver.
Thanks for your input on this problem
I recall a while back a thread about people reporting other drivers who did something stupid or dangerous. Does anyone think it worth reporting the idiot who tried to overtake me on the outside of a roundabout as he wanted the same exit as me and promptly lost control, only avoiding a collision as I realised what he was doing and slammed the anchors on before his back end slid in to me?
If so, any suggestions how I go about it? I'm getting sick of people taking the mick at this particular roundabout, but this one was so monumentally stupid that he deserves a slap about the wrists. (Or head - take your pick) Read more

Remember the clock is ticking from the moment the incident occurred for the offence of dangerous/careless driving which does not involve an accident is one which will require the service of Notice of Intended Prosecution on the offending Driver or Registered keeper in how many days?
Yes 14.
I would recommend a personal visit to Plodshop so that a face to face discussion take place and statement recorded with all the relevant points.

I have 1990 205 XE It is not starting the engine is not turning over and its not the battery because its new. It may be the starter motor as I can't hear it clicking Its maybe the connection ot the start motor has come away because I could not find the connection but I did not have much time to look for it. Has any body got an Idea what the other problems it may be or has had similar experiance??? Read more
On click, or repeated clicking?
One click means the solenoid is engaging, but the motor is getting no power - could be brushes or dodgy contact in the solenoid.
Repeated clicking means that it's getting power, and trying to turn, but as it does so it pulls so much power there's a voltage drop which causes the solenoid to drop out again, whereupon the power recovers, and the solenoid engages again, ad inifitium. Cause of this is usually bad battery or poor connections.
In either case, clean / remake the battery connections, the starter connections, and the engine earth strap. Then give the starter motor a couple of thwacks with a block of wood. If still no go, then you'll have to get the starter out and take it to an autoelectrician.

sorry to start another thread up, just i think my other one had lost interest.
i'm after users views the the new laguna. now according to HJ the recalls in car by car breakdown cover the main problems with the laguna....the electrics of course!
is this the matter closed, or are owners still having serious problems and reliability issues?
i have an idea because on my way to work this morning i saw a car broken down where i've never seen one before........guess what, it was a brand new laguna! Read more
Had a 1.9 diesel on extended test drive over a weekend about a year ago. Not much to like or dislike. Not particularly comfortable and fit and finish very iffy.

I drove 300 miles to Essex yesterday in remarkably light traffic for the festive holiday (left home at 07.30 and arrived 13.15 after a couple of comfort stops)
ACC on at all times and really did come into its own when an eejit swerved from lane 1 to2 forcing an HGV to take evasive action - the ACC reacted much quicker - probably 0.1 seconds or so - than my move to the left hand pedal (autobox). Could have been a no-show for Christmas!! Certainly ensured the second comfort stop!...
I am considering purchasing a used Audi A6 with the 1.8T engine, probably a 99/00 model V/W reg. What sort of things should I look out for and how much should I look to pay for the car privately. Also what are the servicing costs like for the model.
I may consider buying at auction if there are significant savings to be made. Is there a website where I can get the actual prices realised at auction for these cars or does anyone know what sort of prices have been fetched recently.
Thanks

I carry a fire extinguisher and first aid kit in the car. Never used them, but be prepared.
And when I had an accident I was rear ended, which prevented the back being opened, preventing access to first aid kit and fire extinguisher. Can\'t think of a way around that.
I also carry
a warning triangle
space blanket
torch
life hammer (seat belt cutter, window breaker)
coat, hat, gloves (both the warm sort and the disposable sort)

Mark, If by personal, you mean my reference to....... "sincerely hope that you're not the only bystander standing over me (or one of your relatives) if my/their life's ebbing away"....... then, yes it's personal and if that's improper then I accept that and if you wish to snip it I'll know why.
If being "over the top" means I'm sorry/sad/annoyed to read Phil's initial comments and respond with an element of feeling then so be it and I'll 'stop' as requested and this will be my final note on the subject.
Phil has replied to my comments and I readily acknowledge the points he makes..........I'm pleased you did the course, Phil, and if you had mentioned this in your first post and had expanded as you did in your reply, then my response would have been very different.
My words "It's so easy" refer to the simplicity of rendering the basics i.e. the stemming of serious blood loss, the cooling of burns, the avoidance of further injury by getting someone to stop traffic coming round a bend and ploughing in to the casualty and even the application of CPR - after having done a course. The more advanced treatment is indeed specialist and not easy and I'm not suggesting otherwise. I'm just saying 'Basic' and that can be so effective and yet many die due to the lack of it.
If I've offended you, then I apologise, particularly in view of the additional info you give in your reply which enables me (and others) to see things differently from the initial reading of your first post.

Im sure there must be rare occasions where speed limiters are just dangerous. Besides, what happens to driver concentration anyway? My main fear would be people driving at the speed limit regardless. Often its not safe to drive at the speed limit and sometimes the limit is inappropiate.
