  • 99 Megane - fog lights on when braking 7 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I've just been out in my 1999 Megane hatch, and the first time I have used it in the dark for ages. When braking the rear fog light telltail dimly lights up on the dash - indicating the fog lights are "sort of" on. I've asked the missus to press the brakes while I've had a look 'round the back of the car but I can't tell really if they are on or not.
  • 1982 Porsche 928S - no brake lights 28 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Hi all Guess what - my 1982 Porsche 928S has developed an electrical problem (what a suprise!). The brake lights won't come on when the brake pedal is pressed. They have worked perfectly since I bought the car, but they have just packed up (I have got the stop light warning light on the dashboard constantly lit).
  • BMW E39 Brake and side lights issue 20 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I have got the display showing the outline of the car and both light indicators at the rear of the car, which according to the manual means brake lights fault (can also be actual lights as well). When I have checked , I found the brake light bulbs out. So, quick trip down to local shop, then remove rear of clusters to replace the bulbs. Once I had removed both sides, I realised that the 2 bulbs blown where in different positions on each side.
  • xsara 2.0hdi estate brake problems 7 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hi , I have had various problems with my brakes on my front drivers side pads . What it is doing is brakes are binding slightly on this side , so wearing the pads down to metal after 3-4 months , Passenger side all ok no problems . I have replaced the caliper and discs/pads , no fix ,.So booked into garage and had discs replaced again and pads and flexihose on both sides done and system pressure bleed .
  • Brake squeal Clio 1.4 Sport (R-Reg) 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I've recently replaced the pads and discs on a friend's R-plate 1.4 Clio Sport. Previously there was a periodic squeak coming from the brakes and my friend reported juddering through the brake pedal. We suspected a warped disc or something similar, however even with new components the squeak remains (although it is less pronounced and the juddering appears to have been addressed).
  • How much should it cost?... 9 Jun 2006 (Forum)
So, I left it with the garage, they say it will be at least 2 days befor ethey can do the work. I have heard that the two front brake pads will need replacing from from my Haynes manual, as you shouldn't just do the one, otherwise uneven braking. I am pretty sure they will have to replace the brake discs also :P As I did leave it a while.
  • Jaguar MK2 servo 3 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I have recently restored a 1960 MK2 and installed a new remote servo (Lockheed) together with new master cyl, brake lines and hoses and new calipers. The system is filled with Castrol brake fluid (not silicon). The problem I am having is that at the first application of the brakes there seems to be too much servo.
  • Drum Brakes - Ford Ka 5 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Surely the hydraulic cylinder would take up the 'adjustment' on applying the footbrake? The brakes are diagonally connected so surely there was sufficient pressure in the cylinder or the front brake would not have worked correctly? The handbrake I think I can explain. There was such a lot of travel on the handbrake lever attached to the shoe, it was actually hitting the centre of the hub (where the bearings are held.)
  • Laguna accident +Brakes 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The laguna just has some dirty scuff marks on the front bumper (must have been about 10mph speed) so it survived really well. EXCEPT THE BRAKES They didnt feel right while standing on them during accident and now seem distinctly odd to me. I can sit in the car with the engine running, and press the brake pedal hard, and it will slowly sink till the pedal touches the floor.
  • Ford Escort brakes/suspension 14 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Following all the problems I have been having with my polo being set on fire (incidentally, I took it back at the weekend and asked for it to be fixed), I went out and bought a '98 Ford Escort to get me to work and back every day. After a few days, there was a severe vibration on braking and a slight constant vibration through the steering wheel. I had the front discs replaced and this cured the vibration on braking. But the steering wheel still vibrates slightly all the time. I have noticed at low speeds that there is a slight grating noise coming from one of the front wheels as if the brake pads were touching on the discs with every complete revolution of the wheels.
  • Nissan Primera III - Can a wheel bearing only make a noise under braking? 21 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The suspension parts seem fine, and some were replaced with no difference. Other than the caliper, I can't see what could be wrong with the brakes. Can't see it being anything to do with the CV joint, the wheel/tyre (tyre replaced and rotated since) or the steering. It could I guess be that bearing -- but can this manifest itself as an issue only under braking?
  • How to drive an autobox 15 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Tried to email this to HJ direct from his on-line Telegraph column this week, but the system confused my computer. Answering one guy, HJ once again insisted that left-foot braking is best when driving an automatic because, as I understood it, autos cover more ground during an emergency stop situation as the drive is not disconnected instantly and a left foot straight on the brake is faster than moving the right foot from the accelerator to the brake.
  • Nissan Almera - Almera MOT Brake trouble!! 7 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The brake fluid level was on the min level. So I put into the sat nav the nearest petrol station, which was 1.5 miles away. I drove very carefully to the petrol station and bought 1l of brake fluid at £7!!

  • Warranty and Brakes 11 Feb 2024 (Forum)
My car is still under its manufacturer's warranty and I need the brake pads replacing on the front and possibly rear.  I am pretty reluctant to pay inflated dealer prices but have read conflicting statements as to whether using non-OEM pads (for example) would invalidate the manufacturer's warranty.
  • BMW 3 Series - Handbrake light stays on? 16 Feb 2023 (Forum)
My BMW 320d handbrake light stays on even when the handbrake is down. The dashboard says 'braking system drive moderately' with the handbrake sign next to it, the brake pads need doing & it says that on the vehicle status so not sure if the dashboard message has anything to do with that? It did recently have an MOT done with one of the advisories being 'parking brake travel getting high'.

  • Volvo XC90 - Volvo XC90 - faulty brakes 25 May 2019 (Forum)
Rather impressed by The Telegraph for publishing this...hopefully Volvo will not let this happen again https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/katie-investigates/katie-morley-investigates-new-volvo-xc90-faulty-brakes-could/ This is what motoring journalism should be. Not fawning over the latest model and soft-touch plastics, but giving credit where it's due, and outing bad design/build when it's clearly evident.
