• Modern cars - Phantom braking 10 Sep 2025 (Forum)
  I've read a couple of reports of sudden unexpected braking resulting in rear end shunts in cars equipped with this, er, 'safety' feature and wondered if this is becoming widespread?  I haven't seen it mentioned here, but I guess most posters, like me, only have four or low five figure 'investments' in our wasting assets which thankfully lack this frightening (in)capability.

  Hi My car is making a God awful noise when braking. It sounds like a barrel being dragged along under the car and its really loud. It also sounds like a monster belching (only way to describe it).  Apart from that it runs fine.  Thank you, any advice is appreciated.

  My car manual says "only use dot3 brake fluid and dexron 3 power steering fluid".Just checked the prices at the toyota dealership and they are too expensive;halfords don't seem to have any off these.Does anyone know where i can get these for cheap or any alternatives.

  Had the check brake pad warning message come up on dash today. and am wondering how easy a job is it to replace the front and rear pads? Also the drivers side middle cv gaiter needs replacing. and was wondering whether the shaft is held in by a circlip or spring clip??.
• Vauxhall Astra - Brake lights 13 Mar 2011 (Forum)
  This is a note to all drivers of 10 reg Astras.  I have been behind a few at lights and junctions and have noticed the brake lights flickering.  It only seems to be 10 reg models. I assume its a faulty switch, so just to let anyone who drives one to check your lights as they will be under warranty and most drivers would never otherwise notice.

  Hi i am looking for some help after a near miss (slammed on the anchors!) my brake lights are on constant. Have tried to remove the switch that is situated above the pedal and lights go out. Then when plugged back in they are on again.   Any ideas? If the switch whats it called and how much and easy is it to fit?

  I have a problem with heavy vibration under braking. I have fitted new discs& pads,new wheel bearings & caliper guide pins. The vibration is more pronounced at low speed,when there is strong movement on the steering wheel. Could I be requring a new caliper?

  Does anyone know why my Focus judders through the steering wheel when brakes are applied? The front discs and pads are only nine months old and there are absolutely no signs of juddering during normal driving Any help would be welcomed Thanks

  At 3 years old with 15 thousand miles on the clock I would expect this car to pass the first MOT without major failure. My car failed due to badly corroded rear brake discs. This car had been serviced each year by the supplying dealership and is kept in a heated garage. Could it be the discs are not fit for purpose.

  Simple question - how easy is it to fit brake pads and discs to my car? My Toyota dealership garage has quoted £316. Thinking of doing it myself - how much can I expect to pay to buy them and is it relatively easy to do? Thanks

  I get endless warnings of low brake fluid when the reservoir is brim full. one suspects a faulty fluid level sensor (?). Would it be safe to put a short across the pins of the unplugged sensor plug to give some respite from the false warnings ?

  I went with a farmer friend of mine to have 4 BF Goodrich tyres fitted to his Landrover Defender. I noticed that the rear offside brake pad had no lining at all, was scoring the disc and was seized up. This Landrover passed it's MOT only 3 weeks ago. How can this happen?

  Does anyone know what the size of the brake disks on the front of a Renault Modus are? Ours is a 1.5DCi model if that makes a difference. I know they are vented. Are they the same size as any other Renault models (i.e. Clio, Megane etc)?
• Replacing Ford Fiesta MK3 drum brakes 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
  I recently tried to check on a squeeking sound coming from the rear brake of my MK3 1.1 petrol Fiesta. I tried dismantling the rear drum but can't see how. It was easy enough on my past cars but this seems to be difficult. The Haynes manual says that the four bolts connecting the whole assy must be removed.

  Suffering from un even wear on my missus 1.8 ls One set of pads is almost half again worn as the other side , plus it has started to make a grinding noise under heavy braking, Is this a sign of another defective caliper? The car does high miles i.e 120 mile daily although is lighlty loaded with only one passenger! Regards Rob

  I have a 99 T Laguna 1.6... .I have noticed lately that when I brake hard such as coming down from 60mph to stop for a roundabout, the steering wheel judders ever so slightly. I used to have a Cavalier and as far as i can remember i didnt do this.. is this normal or is it a sign that somthing major is going to happen to the breaks. if you break lightly it\'s ok.

  I have a 1992 rover 416, I noticed recently when braking my hazard indicator lights on dashboard would glow smetimes. Now what happens is that when indicating and applying brakes the indictors speed up, but work normally again when I release brake. It also happens when I put car in reverse.

  Hi all Driving home this evening when a message flashed on the centre consol saying 'Braking System Faulty'.  The ABS light along with a 'STOP' light came on on the dash,  Brakes working perfectly, nothing has been done to them recently.  Shortly after another message appeared saying 'power steering faulty' but I still had power steering.

  I then went onto a b road and tried braking from high speed again and it feels the same. Almost like the wind is pushing against one side of the car and its making me countersteer against it. It only does this when braking hard at high speed (60mph+) the abs is working properly as I did an emergency stop the other day and I heard the pump activate and no skidding.
