2003 VW polo 1.4 - Rear brake rip-off? 24 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Hi, Just went to the garage and my rear off side brakes were all corroded. They said the wheel wasn't turning properly. I know nothing about cars but it looked pretty rusty. Apparently it needs full new assembly - housing, discs calipers etc. -
Ford Fiesta 1998 - Replacing Brake caliper 15 May 2013 (Forum)
Ford Fiesta has a seized piston so I have brought another second hand hoping to replace the seized one. However I have fallen at the the first hurdle, The purchased brake caliper has come with the flexi brake pipe attached where they have just cut the hose. I am struggling to remove this pipe. The picture should demonstrate my problem http://s23.postimg.org/goutqz82z/IMG_20130513_211545.jpg T he bolt is a 11mm however I have been working at removing it for a while and it has gone some way to being rounded now. -
Ford Ka, 2010 model - brake pad/ disc replacement 2 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Hi All Son's girlfriend needs brakes and pads replacing on a 10 reg Ka, and because she's skint I may volunteer to take it on myself. Could someone please tell me whether Ka brake replacement is any trickier than the relatively simple procedure on the Focus; and if so, why? -

Ive just replaced all the Brake pads on Mini cooper S 2006 model. I had to strip the rear calipers to free the adjuster for the handbrake. ive re filled with fluid and bled the rear brakes but they still feel spongey. -
Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 96 1.6 Car been runnning on low brake fluid 9 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Is this correct and have I done any damage? Can I just top it up with new fluid? This does explain why there is a lot of travel when braking. -
Do cars need rear brakes? 18 Jun 2009 (Forum)
No doubt those with greater knowledge will point out some compelling reasons why they do, but on a motorcycle I never used the back brake at all except when it was very slippy and I used it instead of the front, the same applies when I am riding on a bicycle. Many racers on both powered and unpowered two wheelers are of the same mind, the theory being that the rear brake is pretty useless as when you apply the front the rear wheel goes light, locks easily and contributes nothing to the stopping power. -
Audi 80/90 Mk 1 (1986 - 1991) - brake assembly paste 22 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Does anyone know where I can get the white (lithium based?) grease used to lubricate the caliper slide pins on the brakes? It's the stuff that comes in a small foil sachet with the caliper overhaul kits. Audi are willing to sell me the stuff for £35 VAT for 100gms. I would prefer to pay less. It doesn't seem to be stocked by the local motor factors, and I don't need anymore brake overhaul kits. -
clutch bleeding..before or after brakes 13 Jun 2007 (Forum)
ok i changed a caliper and have now got spongey brakes and a wierd clutch( only bled the one caliper so far) so i know the sequence for doing the 4 wheels bleeding , but when do i do the clutch or doesnt it matter when? it shares the resovuior with the brakes , and has what i believe is called a master cly( bit attached to pedal) and the slave (attached to g/box) , id also like to know what order theyre are bled in ? -
Rear brake pads.Softer Compound? 19 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Hi,this may be a shot in the dark,I own a Rover 96 420 TD,my other form of transport which is used only in the summer is a 1100 Honda Trike. My question is this,I have fitted a thumb rear brake and as a consequence of that the rear brakes aren't as good as they might be,they are NOT servo assisted.I was wondering if I fitted SOFTER pads this would probaly make it better,ie the pads would grip the discs better.Has anyone got any ideas which pads I might go for? -

Xsara HDi Brake problem 14 Jan 2006 (Forum)
HI all . I have a Xsara 2.0Hdi Estate 1999 model. Problem I have with it is Drivers side brakes sticking slightly .Seems that wheel gets alot hotter . I have replaced the caliper and still does the same . The caliper slides ok on slide bars . The wheel rotates by hand , but in comparsion it feels slightly tighter to rotate then the otherside. The car doesnt pull when braking and passes MOT ok. -
Any one seen my brake pad ? 7 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Coming home the other day in our 1983 Range Rover ,i noticed that the brake peddal went down further than normal all of the sudden. I had recently renewed the front brakes so the back was suspect. Bought new pads for the back, changed back left,no problems, still some wear left, got to the right side, wheel off and to my suprise the inner pad was missing!. -
cars with good brakes 5 Nov 2004 (Forum)
With reference to recent Back Room polls on the priorities of BRs when buying a new car, I asked my wife what her priorities were. One of the top things on her list was "good brakes" - which seems pretty reasonable to me. But how does one find out which models have good brakes? We've got NCAP scores to tell us which cars come out best when we can't stop, but I'd rather know which car did best at stopping. -
pug 405 estate brakes 15 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I've got a pug 405 estate j reg. I order to stop the car i have to press the brake pedal right down to the bottom in order to stop the car. I've been informed thats its either the master cylinder or the brake servo. Could anyone give me any ideas in how to determine which of these thing is could be. -
Performance Brakes 23 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Dear all, With the road rallies and track days ahead, I am going to change the brake fluid to DOT 5.1 on the QX. Is there any side effects? Is DOT 5.1 suitable to go on QX's braking system? Also, I am thinking of changing the pads at the front. The pattern pads overheated and there were smoke pouring out of the spokes of the wheel during the last rally. -
Cheap Brake Pads 15 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I noticed the item in today\'s paper \"Warp Factor True\" (406 with warping brake discs). It reminds me of my same experience when my Rover 218 turbo diesel was a company car and the lease company garage kept replacing discs. It finally appeared that the cause was cheap brake pads that caused immense heat build up. -
K11 Micra -- Handbrake warning light 5 Feb 2003 (Forum)
The "handbrake warning" light often comes on in mid journey. [Exclamation mark in a red circle.] Just driving over a pothole can make it come on -- or when I brake at the bottom of a steep hill 1 mile after starting up in the morning. * Seems to be worse on cold mornings -- maybe the sensor behind the handbrake arm? * Brake fluid is Maximum; brakes seem OK. -
New brake pads 15 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Although I drive the car fast, I'm reasonably gentle on my brakes...and I don't do track days or suchlike. -
Brake servo overhaul. 9 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Has anyone tried overhauling a brake servo from the 70/80s? I know for more modern cars you get a new/exchange one but I've come across a site that does kits for servos on modern classics. My Land Rover braking system was updated some years ago with a Series III set-up, including a servo like you might find in the last of the Series IIIs. -
Brake dust 15 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Brakes work perfectly otherwise. If it goes on like this pads will surely wear down very quickly. Driving is mostly stop and start town, thought it might be this but at the weekend did a longish open road run.
