  • Supermarket petrol - any difference? 23 Dec 2005 (Forum)
After reading the papers and seeing interviews on the TV about the fire at the Buncefield fuel depot, it was said that tankers from Tesco, BP and Total were all lined up for filling along side each other to fill up from the same fuel line. This suggests to me that the petrol quality from supermarkets is the same as those from major suppliers, as they seem to get the fuel from exactly the same source. Is the idea of petrol from supermarkets being of a lower quality, really a valid point?
  • supermarket petrol 27 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I remember some time ago reading that it was not a good idea to use supermarket petrol on a regular basis. Since then I've always stuck to Shell or Esso when possible. I was telling a friend this but I couldn't remember the detailed basis for it. Can you remind me? Thanks Richard

  • petrol - a difference? 3 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Just got my Saturday Telegraph here in SW France and I see, once again, HJ is warning against using supermarket petrol. Can I recount my personal experience? Before I moved to France I ran a Honda Legend in the UK and always used Esso or Shell 95 unleaded - convenient and cost no more than at the supermarket.
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 1985 1.6 Supermarket Petrol 26 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Yesterday I drove my wife's Golf (which never had a knock sensor and was designed to run on 91 RON petrol) 10 miles to a supermarket with no problems. As the petrol gauge was on empty I put in 10 pounds of 95 RON petrol. Five minutes later I heard a knocking noise coming from under the bonnet only when the engine was under load.
  • Supermarket petrol, is it rubbish? [Read Only] 3 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I have heard a great many folk who stay far away from supermarket petrol because they believe it is nowhere near as good as Shell or BP, etc. What do you guys think? Would I get better MPG with non-supermarket fuel? I've had my car from new and 99% of the time it gets filled up at Sainsbury's or Morrisons.
  • Seat Leon - Petrol - Branded or Supermarket 16 May 2018 (Forum)
I am expecting to receive a new 1.2 Leon in a few weeks. • Petrol stations with mini supermarkets attached 26 Jan 2017 (Forum)
I am getting irritated by petrol stations with mini supermarkets attached. Customers drive up to a pump-fill up-then go inside to "pay" . But no no--they then do a nice slow basket shop, fill up with a take away coffee then stroll back to their car as if they've go all the time in the world.
