Ford Focus - 2000 Ford Focus 1.4 stalls at idle, dial probs 11 Jun 2010 (Forum)
They do eventually rise to the correct place but it's a bit odd that they take so long. The car has recently been serviced with new brakes, spark plugs, oil change, air filter blah blah. I've just had the idle control valve cleaned, a new clutch has been put in (after 150k it needed one!) and the speed sensor has been replaced. -
ford focus 2001 - front coil springs, shock absorbers problems 22 May 2010 (Forum)
she just found out that she needs the front coil springs replaced, a pair of front shock absorbers done, both front brake discs and pads, a tracking check and also a new battery. We were quoted 713.55 by the garage which we cant afford to pay so its stuck there at the moment. I thought id see if i can find a cheaper alternative by buying the parts myself online which came to just over 200 and got a quote from a mobile mechanic to do all the work for around 150. -
Nissan Almera replacement 18 May 2010 (Forum)
Firstly two months after I bought it the gearbox had to be replaced- luckily under warranty- and then last year at service time the brake discs had worn so badly they needed to be replaced at 25,000 miles. Now it seems the air conditioning isn't doing its job properly and I am not going to fork out more money for this. Basically for all it always starts, is fairly comfortable, does over 40 mpg and is good on long journeys, these faults have annoyed me big time- not helped by someone deciding to scratch a smiley face into the bonnet late one night in a car park. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 2.0 Cruise Control Cutting Out 3 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I am not sure about all of the times this happened, but I did notice on several occasions, that it happened after I had either just temporarily adjusted the speed using the "Increase or decrease speed butttons" or had switched it off for a moment, possibly by using the brake, and then switched it back on. Sometimes it happened several times in succession, and other times went many miles without occuring. This did not seem to happen after I returned to the UK, even though I travelled a further 100 miles again using Cruise Control. -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 99 2.0 Hissing noise 9 Dec 2009 (Forum)
When tapping either of the solenoids valves on the bulkhead the noise can also be 'made' to fluctuate. I am guessing these two are linked? This high/low pitched noise can be stopped by pumping the brake pedal to extinguish any remaing vacuum in the system What steps should I do to troubleshoot this problem? I think the problems are/could be 1. EGR diaghram leaking/not sealing when the valve applies vacuum 2. -
Rover 45 (1999 - 2005) - Is this a good offer? 18 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Anyway, any thoughts from the backroom? Basically going to cost me about £500 to change. Current Megane will need major service/brakes all round/suspension bushes soon which I imagine will cost much the same, so unless there is anything (apart from HGF) I should look for on a Rover 45 I can't really see anything against the deal. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 19 1.3 Suspension now knocking at rear and steerin 10 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My dads Fiesta passed its MOT in August and needed some advisories doing these included rear bushes and new front wheel bearings. A couple of months before this he spent a fortune having the rear brake cylinders and shoes replaced as well as new tie rods at the front. We have spent around £400 on these repairs and now its clonking everywhere 1) There is a clock from the front, the lower wishbones were last replaced 15,000 miles ago by us so it may be the bushes on this have worn again. 2) It makes a knock from the rear, I checked all the obvious exhaust, spare wheel etc and its all fine. 3) It makes a clicking noise everytime you do a fairly sharp turn. -
Mitsubishi Colt (2009 - ) - Diesel vs. petrol economy 1 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Typical load would be a 60 mile journey laden with a few hundreds of kilos of veg passing through various villages (plenty of braking to avoid potholes,goats,etc.). Any thoughts on how the petrol 1.5 would compare with the diesel 2.5 on running costs? Both engines I believe are pretty primitive jobs. -
Advice sought over a car purchase 22 Sep 2009 (Forum)
He drove it to a garage on the next day to get it checked over (a independent, not the one he bought it from) and the garage said the brakes and callipers had bound and that the car was in a poor condition (the garage used another phrase for the mechanical state of the car!!) Also the car was not supplied with a new MOT (maybe the dealership was aware of the problems and new that the work was going to cost them more then they were prepared to pay out to get it through) My friend rang the dealership and had a rant and rave about the state of the car ? -
Current rules to pass your test 25 Aug 2009 (Forum)
However as a result of this, and various questions he has, can anyone answer the following: How do you slow down to a junction? In my day we had to go down through the gears, but has it now changed to just using brakes and maybe changing down just before car stops? Is it still totally stationery for a STOP sign, but don't need to stop for Give Way? Is it still a no no to change gear during a manoeuvre like going round a roundabout? -
Worst bike ever...unless you know better! 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The rider was having to having to anticipate when the gaps would appear, open the throttle in advance, and then balance the whole lot on the brakes when it all started to go pear shaped. Chatting to the rider at the lights he was praying that the service would ditch the Nortons before they ran out of riders... I'd be interested to hear other people's nominations. f2 -
People pulling out and making you slow down 16 Jun 2009 (Forum)
What I will moan about is the 3 different occasions where I was driving along the single carriageway at 60mph with no one behind me, and people decided to enter the road from a side junction in front of me, causing me to have to step on the brakes and slow down to 35mph. These people all then slowly accelerated up to around 50-55mph and started cruising at that speed. Why do they think it's ok to pull out and cause someone to have to almost halve their speed? -
Blue flashing lights 29 May 2009 (Forum)
It was impossible for the Police car to pass me due to the oncoming traffic. At the time, my speed was 30 mph (it is a built-up restricted zone). Had I braked, even slightly, a collision would have been inevitable. There was no pavement on the side of the road leading to Dooley Lane, so nowhere for me to pull in out of the way. Eventually, at the Dooley Lane traffic lights, I managed to pull to the nearside (my journey required me to turn right at this point, but that would have been dangerous with the Police car where it was). -
Rover - P6 3500 / 3500S 7 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I knew someone who worked for British Aerospace who cut a hole in the boot of his then covered it with a panel fixed down with fasteners only found elsewhere in the Harrier - this made working on the brakes much easier, but I never got round to doing the same to mine. What is parts availability like nowadays? And have members of this forum got any concerns about the unconventional suspension? Also, to improve or not? -
Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 00 2.0i stalls at junctions and when changing gear 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Nest day its stalling again, especially in first 5 miles. Problem is of course stalled motor = no power steering or brake assist, scary when just coming to a junction/island etc. Various US web sites suggest cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve out, or using higher octane fuel, putting in injector cleaning stuff in the petrol (STP) etc etc Has any one solved this problem before or any bright ideas please, as I am fed up of spending cash at dealers who cant identify the problem or fix it for me Thanks DavidB -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.9 TDI 115 making strange noises 1 Mar 2009 (Forum)
t find anything wrong so we drove a short distance and when I changed into 3rd gear @ 20mph, the noise returned. He subsequently checked the front brake discs, jacked up the front, started the engine and engaged gear. The noise returned (just like a belt fouling on a pulley) but neither of us was able to establish its source. We agreed that it didn? -
Crash & cash it scam 13 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Suddenly the car behind you does a TWO car overtake. It pulls in front of the vehicle ahead of you and for no 'apparent' reason brakes hard and causing the car in front of you to an almost stop. Their combined intentions are to make you rear end the vehicle in front of you and have probably just succeeded in doing so? ?if you failed to keep your distance. -
Ford Puma (1997 - 2001) - 2000 1.7 - Loss of Power 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
While driving, there seems to be a loss of power, it actually feels like someone is applying the brakes. It only lasts for a few seconds and then the car appears to surge forward. I have tried looking at the rev counter when it does it and revs does not seem to drop. The problem is totally arbitrary ie it can happen when the engine is cold or hot, in low gear or in high gear and in different weather conditions. -
Grease and Rust Report-for `old waxers`-like-GB 6 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Sump like new underneath. re-applied a slather of HMP grease and rubbed in.. (Is there any better feeling in DIY than slapping a handful of grease on?) Brake pipes, Wiped off bentone based Castrol CL waterproof grease. Pipes like new. Re-applied. Both of the above not needing doing again really, but re-done just because I was under there. Observed, Subframes and under-body seams. -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 2003 330Ci - BMW Diagnostic Kits for Laptop 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
As far as I can understand the Carsoft kit is specific for BMW cars and the ELM327 kit is more generic to most cars (Ford/Vauxhaul/Japanese) Can any one tell me, Which one is best to buy that will check all or majority of the functionality on my car like, engine,ABS,Air Bag, brakes, electrics etc etc and also be able to reset all the fault codes/lights? Also will any of these kits be compatible with my laptop running on Windows Vista? Thanking you all in advance for replies :-)
