  • Slip road halters. 4 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Following a MB down the sliproad, nice and quiet, she got to the point where I thought she would merge and she just hit the brakes, stopped and I ended up overtaking her whilst she sat waiting for non existent traffic to pass. All three showed total lack of understanding of how to join a motorway/dual carriageway. and the second could have resulted in a massive pile up.
  • Daewoo Matiz wet floor update. 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The morning after about 11 am I opened the drivers door..... and guess what......Yes the floor on my side was covered in a puddle of water about an 16th of an inch deep, all over the drivers side floor. The passenger side was totally dry. I cannot see any water droplets coming from behind the brake pedal area at all. Any-way, this morning i phoned a windscreen place, and booked it in with them to see if they can find where the water is coming in. I am that pis..d off with it at the moment, I am even dreaming about it.......
  • Service interval - Ford Mondeo 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
My first thought was May, but then I thought, well the car won't be 2 years old or have done 25,000 miles then, so things might not get done at the service that would get done nearer 2 years/25,000 miles (e.g. change brake fluid). I will ask at the dealers next time I'm passing, but it just came to me and I was just wondering what backroomers' views/thoughts were on this. Would it invalidate the 2nd & 3rd years warranty if I left it till September ?
  • Motorbikes & Headlights 8 Aug 2006 (Forum)
And suddenly 10 feet from my nearside is a motorbike approaching far too rapidly. Fortunately, he had good brakes and I had good acceleration so there was no contact. He did make a series of hand gestures which he was pretty much entitled to make. In my defence, it was a black bike, he was wearing camouflage clothing, travelling well over the 60 speed limit and didn't have any lights on.
  • Tyre repairs 3 May 2006 (Forum)
As I mentioned in the recent 'Slow Driving' thread "Noticed a "pattering" noise while on the A38/M5 on Wednesday, stopped at Cullompton and found a clout nail securely stuck in my rear nearside tyre, no air loss, weighed up the pros and cons of putting the space saver on and being stuck at 50mph with reduced braking etc or carrying on with the nail at 50mph though with normal handling intact. Decided on the latter ......." That tyre was well worn so I had it replaced with a 50% worn tyre that I had in the garage after having two new fronts fitted 6 months ago following damage to one.
  • Main dealer servicing, a ripoff? 15 Mar 2006 (Forum)
According to the glossy leaflet sent to me by Nissan the cost of a major service is £199 including VAT with the MOT thrown in for free. A couple of hours later I get a phone call from Nissan saying the car will need new rear brake pads, new front tyres, and new wiper blades total cost £789. 19. I asked if he was pulling my plonker or was it April the 1st already?. Even without the tyres he said it was going to cost £591. Now I am not daft I expected to pay £100 to £200 on top of the £199 quoted for parts etc.
  • Surprising Focus 4 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Seats are more comfortable in the Renault and the trim quality is also better, including the door panels. Megane's steering is not as sharp but handles about the same and not much in the ride. Brakes much sharper in Megane. Gear change a bit more notchy than Focus. But more than anything that impressed me was how much cars have come on in the last few years. Megane and Focus are just ordinary hatches but compared to the Escort and previous Megane, are light years ahead.
  • Slippery road: Cause, effect, liability? 6 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I was coming up a hill towards a bend, a driver coming the other way lost control on the bend and barrell rolled his car down the hill losing a wheel on the way, the car stopped on it's roof only 50 meters from where I had stopped having braked as I saw the accident happening. The driver was the only person in the car, he got himself out, he had a cut on the back of his head and was shaken though I reckon he came off lightly in the circumstances.
  • Rear Fog Light- On or Off? 3 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Law RVLR regs 25 & 27 211: You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 201) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves. Law RVLR regs 25 & 27 ########################## A colleague complained he was dazzled when following me into work. It was freezing fog conditions and poor visibility IMHO.
  • Tales of motoring stupidity 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
If she had just kept going as normal on her journey she would have been clear of the stopped cars before the police car had needed to pass, not holding the rozzers up at all. But her brain seemed to engage "nnnggghhhh" mode and she just stomped on the brake and sat there. It was only when the drivers who had pulled over previously realised what she was doing and pulled up onto the pavement that the cops could get past. As soon as the police were out of the way she just carried on her merry way blissfully unaware of her own stupidity.
  • Renault madness 10 Jan 2006 (Forum)
We bought a Renault Grand Scenic (7 seater) Last year...Nice looking car, great features, okay to drive. I was only concerned about two things. 1. It has an automatic parking brake. (A kind of fly-by-wire device)... French....Bound to go wrong. It did. Not only is is a complete pain to use when trying to park on a hill...It also broke. No handbrake...Whole new computer control etc.
  • irresponsible OLD drivers! 30 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Traffic now too heavy for anything more than 65mph and Porker still weaving all over the show, finding gaps where there are none and causing other cars to swerve or brake sharply. Eventually, SWMBO rang the police who said they would monitor and at the next service station a cop car was waiting at the slip road with lights on. He pulls out and gently follows porker for several miles during which time we all overtake yellow car, whose average speed is serverly reduced.
  • Volvo 850 t5 ABS pump leaking 4 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Finding a part has been particularly difficult, as I believe the unit I require was only on the '94 year cars. If it were my car, I would be inclined to try to sell it as it is. The leak is only minor (if a brake fluid leak ever can be). This brings me to ask what would be the best means of disposal. If I were to take it to a car auction, would I have to declare the fault, or would it simply go in the sale as sold as seen?
  • Chavs!!!! Why Bovva!! 30 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Bearing in mind we were only doing about 25mph he still managed to cut from lane 3 to lane 2 so close that I could not see his rear screen, this caused me to hit the brakes HARD, and I was sure I must have hit him, after a blast on the extremley loud set of air horns ;o) I had they got all upset and the passanger decided he was going to call me every four letter name he could think of (I counted 3 before he had to start looping them, lack of intelligence!!!)

We went up to Gaydon for Range Rovers 35th anniversary and we had a ride in this car around Land Rovers test track ,it was interesting, its got this G force do da that means it can go around sharp corners at 100mph plus and that is what we did, with 130mph on the straight. When he did an emergency stop to show off its brakes my step father blacked out !!. Glen
  • Are vehicles more reliable? 8 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Today, nearly 40 percent of the value in an average vehicle is tied up in its software and electrical systems. A single car may have as many as 70 different processors, controlling everything from anti-lock brakes and automatic transmissions to cruise control and fuel injection. Failures to those embedded systems account for a third of all warranty claims. Controlling the costs of warranties has big benefits.
  • Unmarked Police Car - possibly? 11 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Maroon Vectra drives down on ramp, undertakes 1st car in lane 2 at a differential of 20-30mph then swings out behind me as he is unable to undertake the 2nd car in lane 2 due to the car in lane 1. He is now closer than 10m behind me at 85mph. I have a choice : pull into lane 2 and brake hard to avoid the next car which is now < 50m away, carry on at 85mph with car tailgating me or add speed to pull in front of the next car in lane 2 at a safe distance. I choose the latter option and am annoyed to see the Vectra match my speed 90,95,100 without dropping back at all and I go to pull in.
  • Mitsubishi Galant - suspension noises 3 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hi there I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant V6-24 Auto. I recently had new brake disks and pads on all wheels (don't know if this is related or not) but since then it seems to have developed a sort-of clonk or rattle when going over small bumps at lowish speeds. The problem seems to occur on tiny bumps (like running over a catseye or a small rut or pothole) when doing urban speeds - 30mph or thereabouts.
  • Wife a victim of road rage 15 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Next thing, the idiot accelerates past, swings wildly in front of her and in doing so claps on his brakes forcing her to do a full blown emergency stop. She had the presence of mind to pull out and drive on immediately before Chav/Mrs Chav had a chance to come back to the car. She readily admits she made a mistake, but there is no excuse for this yobbish behaviour!

t think that it would have been necessary if he had been travelling at a normal speed for the situation. Are ABS brakes fitted to tradesmen?s vans ?
