  • Volvo S80 Engine cut out problems 14 Feb 2005 (Forum)
This normally happens when I slow down, say coming to a set of traffic lights, or pedestrian crossing or when I hit the brakes suddenly. Sometimes the car behaves normally like there is nothing wrong I could drive it for days without cutting out, but sometimes it cuts out. I have also noticed that sometimes the idling struggles a bit even when the car is not moving.
  • Which old banger? 5 Nov 2004 (Forum)
#1 Vauxhall Cavalier, 1.6, J reg, 144K miles, brown-silver eczema paint, saloon, T&T->April05, exhaust looks OK, some nasty rust on brake pipes where they pass under clips, tyres thin-ish, been standing 2 months, runs OK after a minute or two, slightly crusty around wheel arches, slightly grubby and worn interior. Has been owned by a home mechanic. £300 #2 Fiat Punto 55, 1.0, N reg, 103K miles, maroon sort of colour, 3 door hatch, tax->endJan05, MOT->endAug05, new-ish exhaust and cat, tyres 1/2 worn, no real rust, many small dings as if doors opened into posts, in use daily, leaky sun-roof taped shut, broken bonnet pull (use pliers), leaky "rocker box" gasket with oil plastered over front of engine, slight grating noise when reversing, inside worn but not too grubby. £300.
  • pug306td 96 electrics 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Connected all the electrics back up which was fairly straight forward however when the battery is connected the stop light and brake light come on on the dashboard. Strange without the key even in the car this shouldnt happen, also the immobiliser seems to disarm itselfb (toad) doesnt have the factory immobiliser as originally it was a n/a derv.
  • pug306 slight steering pull 4 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I will re-check tyre-pressure, and If I get the chance will swap nsf and osf wheels, to see how that affects it (just incase one wheel is out of round due to excessive toe in/out wear). By the way, if I brake and let go of the the sterring wheel, it does NOT pull to one side. Any other ideas on possible causes, or things to try?
  • White smoke from M Reg Astra 1.4 2 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Temperature gauge didnt move but we also own a Corsa which can run happily for nearly 30 mins before gauge moves. Popped car in gear to move off drive but as it had been sitting for a while the back brakes had locked. Before going any further we added some of Halfords own brand radweld as we knew there was a very slight leak on the radiator. This is where the problems started. As soon as car was put into gear again the white smoke started to appear at the exhaust much the same as before the gasket was replaced.
  • Ford Fiesta rear shocks 29 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Good evening my learned friends, Whilst doing a brake shoe change on my Mk 4/5 Fiesta (facelifted), i noticed that the o/s rear shock needed replacing due to oil weeping on the side of it. Replacement looks fairly easy, i have a slight problem regarding the set up of the new shocks.
  • Why can\'t I be left to think for myself? 1 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Why can?t I? It seems wherever I have to steer or brake there?s a non-skid road surface to help me. To get me to ?behave? at junctions there are traffic islands, road markings and traffic signals, maybe together tending further towards confusion than helpfulness*.
  • Too polite 29 Dec 2003 (Forum)
In fact, as someone who professionally advises people on motoring matters, you have a duty of care to report them to the DVLC. As for the Corsa with worn out brake pads and the eight year old Merc with a worn out autobox - why is it that so many of your readers think that their cars should last forever without maintenance? Because you are too polite to tell them that they are cheap as well as thick.
  • How unlucky is this? 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Car went in for a service and its first MOT on Friday. Had the cambelt done, two suspension bushes replaced, new pads and steel braided brake hoses. Came to £680 plus the price of the pads and hoses. Money well spent as this car may have to last me a few years yet, although it left the current account looking a bit poorly. Yesterday evening the heating failed whilst driving.... then the temperature gauge started its inexorable climb....
  • What should I do? 22 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I took my gf's car to a local garage to have the brakes looked at Saturday. They told us that both front discs were corroded, warped and "excessively worn" and should be replaced. They wanted £200+VAT for the job. I thought this a little suspect as the discs and pads had been replaced not more than 18 months previous.
  • Lupo 1.4 16V - oil deposits and idle. 19 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Is this usual, or does it indicate a problem? There is a rubber pipe leading from this section of the airbox which I had assumed was the brake servo vacuum, but could it be an oil breather? Anyway...Got the car back from the place that did the clutch, and the idle speed now fluctuates between 800 and 1200 rpm. I\'ve read previous posts here which suggest it might be due to carp building up in a sensor somewhere, but I wondered if it might have been caused by disconnecting the battery when the clutch was changed.
  • Bit of advice required please 21 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Driving down the motorway yesterday minding my own business, noticed a donk in a gte doing the normal boy racer thing, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic etc, passes me but pulls into middle lane. Cautiously I overtake and the donk pulls straight out, I hit the brakes hard and swerve to avoid, luckily there is a big space between lane 3 and the barrier or I would have been a goner. We touched, nice big white paint scratch down my wing, lump out of the passenger door.
  • buying advice - all comments welcome 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
purchase car: mondeo st 24 5dr with 46k miles in metallic black, good body work, apparently good drivetrain, and certainly drives well compared to all the others I’ve tested.... but the problem is that it's a repossessed ford credit car, and as such the service history is slightly patchy - the car is 5 years old, and in the slightly dubious service book only 3 services are detailed. The car has a mot, and has new brakes pads and discs, new mid-section exhaust. There’s no evidence to suggest the car has been neglected, quite the opposite, just it looks like someone forgot take the record book back when they took the car.
  • Advice needed re: Dealer and 02 V40 19 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Advice needed on how to tackle the dealer re: this problem. The Brake Fluid warning light came on last week. Opened up the bonnet and the fluid level was below MAX but above the MIN level. About at the MIN-Clutch level actually (about 1 inch about the MIN mark) anyway.
  • Yaris antiroll bar bushes 20 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I had the car in the National Tyres last weekend as I thought I had a problem which turned out to be just a trapped stone rubbing on the brake disc. However, while inspecting it, the chap noticed that both the bushes were perished and would need replacing fairly soon. I observed this myself and they did indeed look in bad condition, plus as he was just advising, not trying to get the work, I'm more inclined to take his advice.
  • Trip to the skidpan 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
The course covered various techniques, including: - thinking about ?exit routes? (e.g. mounting a clear pavement) rather than just braking; - learning to feel when the back is going to let go; - correcting rear-wheel skids in both FWD and RWD cars; - taking effective lines into and out of corners to minimise chances of skid; - using ABS effectively to steer around an obstacle; - cadence breaking; - steering out of a locked-wheels skid by releasing break pedal.
  • Servicing BMW 318i 30 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I have phoned the BMW dealership which has serviced it during the last 2 years and they very helpfully went through their computer records. Coolant has been changed in the last 12 months, but no mention of brake fluid. Should this be changed as a precaution? 5. Does this engine have a cam chain? 6. Anything else I ought to consider doing? Thanks in anticipation. Pat
  • MX5 Woe ! 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Neither would it fit in the car with the passanger - anyway despite being only a few weeks old it was filthy (brake dust, grime and general cr*p) and certainly would have sullied the lovely interior of her car. Fortunately a knight in shining plastic found her outside his house and let her keep the wheel there (this was at 0100 in the drizzle and dark).
  • Shaking minibus 22 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Whilst traveling back to work today ( the bus was empty at the time apart from me ) the whole bus started shaking from side to side getting progressively worse, i was doing around 40 mph at the time. I braked gently and the shaking eased then stopped so i increased speed back up to 40. It then started again and got so bad i had to slow right down again. It then stopped shaking so i plodded back to work.
