  Got major electrical gremlins in the mother-in-laws megane! If only it was the airbag, or brakes. Sorry I digress...... 1- when the brakes are applied the rear indicator light comes on, but only on the left hand side. 2- believe it or not to turn the windscreen wipers on you have to turn the heater on!?!

  hi,i'm a german car mechanic and i am having problems with my passat 1.9 tdi 130 6 spd, i have just replaced my front wheel bearing, now whenever i brake very gently as i come to a stop the abs fires on that wheel.[grinding noise] when you brake hard nothing happens, i've tried changing the abs sensor as i know they dont like to be disturbed but it has made no difference , when you drive normally the car seems fine it doesnt pull or make any weird noises!!!!!!!!!!!!

  Wednesday 9th was a pretty grotty day for driving especially down south what with the rain & spray ,but a lot of drivers who passed me on the M40 s/bound around 7am ish were using fog lights, dazzling me, causing me to take my eyes `off the road` momentarily. This is not safe because if you focus on fog lamps you may not notice brake lights coming on suddenly, although if you`re at the correct braking distance it shouldn`t be a problem , but how many drivers maintain a proper safe distance? i.e a two second gap, i personally like to see plenty of tarmac between me and the vehicle in front but there`s always someone eager to fill the gap oblivious to the fact that my truck takes longer to stop the `his` car!

  I have recently had the front springs replaced after one of them broke. A local garage did the work (big mistake). I started driving the car and noticed that the brakes would feel strange especially when travelling at low speeds. I assumed my brake pads were worn so had them checked. Turns out they are in good order, but informed my ABS may have been affected when springs were changed.

  (I guess I'm avoiding crawling under the car to find out.) Btw, I've mentioned before, that Focii with rear drums seem to have poor brakes, and an equally poor handbrake. Part of the reason that it needs adjusting is that you have to heave on it for it to be effective.

  - After about 20 mins driving a squeal starts on the passenger side wheels - The squeal disappears when steering to the right - The squeal disappears when applying the brakes - The squeal is worst when steering to the left - The squeal is worst when driving at faster speeds - When I stop, the wheels are incredibly hot; I presume due to some friction going on - I have taken the car into a garage where they checked out and cleaned the brake pads and this resulted in no improvement Has anyone experienced similar?

  I've found that once I reach around 30mph I get a rumbling sort of noise, if I dip the clutch the revs drop but the noise stays at road speed, also, it doesn't alter if I lightly apply the brakes or gently weave. I've read that front wheel bearings are often a problem on the E39, but I'd have thought the braking/weaving would have loaded any clearance and made them go a bit louder or quieter, any thoughts?

  But what basic material are they machined from, and how is that made? Is it some sort of fabric like brake linings used to be? Perhaps it won't be a mystery to one or two of you. I am all ears (when not all mouth that is :o}).

  My friends Lanos 1.6 T reg exhibited a loud squealing noise when she drove it, which finally ended with a 'clunk' & then she felt the car lost power & also the ABS light came on. The RAC man said it was a problem with the brakes, so I checked & yes it needed new discs & pads. I did the job, brakes & power fine but the ABS light is still on. I also noticed that the ABS sensors on the hubs looked like they were set right in, so much so that they had worn the sensor teeth on the CV joint.

  Obviously just dropped the kids off, a old toyota people carrier pulls out right in front of me, dangerously in my opinion, and he/she doenst make much of an effort to get up to speed, causing me to brake , . I flashed to indicate my displeasure. Then, they applied the brakes and pointed to the 30 sign! I was astounded that they do something wrong and then make out im speeding. Honestly. They then stopped and let everyone out.

  When they are replaced I expect them to stay corrosion free until they get wet. Staying on the subjet of brakes: Do you change the fluid when it is 2 years old, when the lowering of its boiling point indicated the presence of water, or both? My relpy is: When it boils to soon.

• Megane MOT Woes 5 Jul 2004 (Forum)
  Dropped my megane of for its MOT last monday, running pretty much perfectly apart from slightly spongy feeling brakes. MOT failed because the brake compensator was jammed and emmisions were too rich. To rectify the emissions they replaced the O2 sensor. Since collecting the car I've had to top up the radiator twice in 7 days (never had to do this in 7 years), returned to the garage today to get them to rectify what I felt they must have broke (pipe burst\loose).
