  • Cars still being flogged to death, no saving then? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Haven`t seen much change around the City ring roads in driving habits. Cars surging past on full turbo boost, then braking heavily at the next roundabout. Made me wonder, where`s the evidence of concern for saving money? Everyone was really flooring it on the ring road this AM. (As always) You could almost hear the pedals being thwacked to the floor as they surged alongside turbo`s hissing, braking, surging and then dropping back at times due to lack of anticipation.
  • Slow moving ambulance(s) may be on call 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The driving was brilliant, moving over in plenty of time to allow others onto the road at junction without him braking, he was careful not to impede anyone in the outside lane. What shocked us was the way some other drivers behaved - yes, the mercedes driver who undertook and then braked suddenly in front of him was the one I particularly would like to meet - and the motorcyclist who cut across him at traffic lights.
  • Nice man Neil at Halfords 8 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Yesterday I went to Halfords at Edge Lane in Liverpool as one of my lights was out. I asked for a brake light as when I put the brake pedal down one of the back lights did not come on. I asked what they would charge to fit it and he said £2.99. I was going to take him up on this as seemed easier but he told my boyfriend that it was pretty easy and all he had to do was pull the fitting out and out the bulb in.
  • No brake lights - what would you do? 9 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Driving home yesterday evening with my son in the front seat and almost drove into the back of an elderly and very shabby Mk1 Range Rover. I realised reasonably quickly that the RR had no brake lights. I managed to pull to the side of him at a junction and wound the window down to tell him. He couldn't wind his window down (obviously u/s as it was his drivers side window he was trying to drop) and so opened the door, which reveal a lot of rust.
  • Almera N16(2004) Handbrake Warning Light 6 Apr 2006 (Forum)
As per the subject, really. My 18mth old Almera's suddenly started to flash the brake fluid / handbrake on light when I'm going around corners. Doesn't seem to matter whether it's left or right turns. I've checked the brake fluid level - there's plenty in there (the car was serviced no more than 2mths ago so I would hope that there would be), so I've discounted low fluid levels.
  • VAG brake disks/pads 4 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Just thought I'd share this with other owners of cars built on that platform which might have common brake components. As an aside, I'm starting to wonder if this may explain the gradual reduction in fuel economy in recent months - took a 50-mile A&B-road trip yesterday which the OBC measured at 51 mpg, as opposed to 45 mpg for the same trip the previous week.
  • EBD - will different tyre sizes confuse 22 Oct 2005 (Forum)
For a while now, roughly co-inciding with the use of increased rolling radius tyres on the rear, the braking has felt strange. It feels as if the servo isn't always working and the ABS is trying to kick back quite often, even when braking gently. The servo has been checked out ok, as well as the non-return vacuum valve.
  • Noisy 306 18 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The brakes now occasionally make a "mooing noise" at low speeds (curiously, again while steering). It's more noise than you'd expect from just brake dust. Any help would be very much appreciated, as its driving me mad!
  • Road safety advert inaccuracies 23 Sep 2003 (Forum)
If that is how the majority of accidents occur, the ad should have been explaining that for cars without ABS keeping the brake pedal floored whilst skidding is NOT the most efficient way of stopping!
  • Seatbelts remain top safety enhancement 5 Apr 2003 (Forum)
In that era, a person’s chances of dying in an automobile accident were four times higher than they are today. Since that time, the industry has outfitted vehicles with dual braking systems (1968); disc brakes (1960s); antilock brakes (1980s); radial-ply tires (1970s); shatter-proof safety glass (1968); collapsible steering wheels (1960s); lap-and-shoulder seat belts (1969); less-intrusive metal (1966); and airbag systems (1970s/1980s).
  • Rear Foglight Use and Abuse 19 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I've always tended to be pretty sparing in my use of these lights - they're often pretty dazzling when the fog's not too thick, and can make it hard to pick out brake lights ahead (particularly when only one's working!). Also, when driving in busy 'convoy' traffic, the sudden uncovering of a fog lamp a few cars ahead can be mistaken for brake lights, and I've often seen 'concertina' braking occur for this reason.
  • Proposed F1 changes. 1 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Its the changes to the cars technology which would improve the closeness of the racing. Having controlled brakes/electronics/tyres e.t.c. Removing auto gearboxes/traction control would mean more driver input. One important area to address is the difficulty of overtaking.Ridiculous short braking areas combined with aerodynamic disturbance when following a car closely means overtaking is rare.
  • New car Rights 16 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I even had to wait 4 months for a new servo and master cylinder to be fitted (Which they diagnosed as faulty to fix the squealing brakes, I am an ex-brakes designer ... go figure .. it didn't work) I am now at the end of my tether, I really liked the car, but now I dont want it anymore, I think I have been patint enough. I am trying to get my money back ...
  • Dandy Trailer Tent - Curses 26 Jul 2023 (Forum)
Local mobile repair guy reckons I'll be alright on three studs for a few hundred miles if I don't brake much.  Other option is to buy and fit two new braked indispension unts in the morning.  Nothing to stop me destroying those bolts too, though...
  • Ford Fusion - Rear wheel bearing replacement 28 Aug 2021 (Forum)
2003 model, no ABS, drum brake. Optimistically (encouraged by Haynes manual) making some progress (got the brake drum off and the circlip out) but now a bit stuck (like the old bearing). Does any one have a favourite trick which does not need specialist equipment for getting the old bearing out?

  • Peugeot 107 2005-2014 - Switching off ABS in snow 14 Feb 2018 (Forum)
Mine has winter tyres but compared to a similar class of car that I used in snow a few years ago I don't like its braking.  This is due to ABS, which prevents me locking up the wheels and letting the tyres collect snow to brake it - when that technique is appropriate.  Is it possible to switch it off?  If it is possible, I have in mind a simple switch/relay setup that will automatically switch ABS back on next time the car is started.

  • BMW X1 - Unfair MoT Failure? 1 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Even the test centre said the car was still safe. So it seems to me that the car has failed unfairly because BMW fit unnecessary brake parts that can just drop off at random, and if it does, it really doesn't matter. Was the test centre right to fail the car on this fault?
  • 1986 Daihatsu Skywing - "Missing" rear brake nipple? 12 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I only seem to have a bleed nipple on the RHS rear wheel. I'm assuming this is unusual, but I havn't bled many cars (and those a long time ago) so...
