I drive a V reg 306 1.8XS with 56K on the clock. Ever since I've had the car (18 months), there's been a couple of annoying problems:

1. There is a squeak from the front wheels (imagine a rusty bike wheel). It initially started as an intermittent problem, only when steering to the left. It generally occurs at speeds above 30mph. Now it happens pretty much all the time, but from both wheels, whilst driving in a straight line. It's more pronounced when steering though. The handling of the car is a little skittish at times and the steering doesn't feel as smooth as it should (this is the second 306 i've had). Could it be a sticking caliper? Or the bearings, ball joints or cv joint?

2. The brakes have always been noisy (more squeaking!). I've had all 4 pads & discs changed, so I assumed that this would cure the problem. Unfortunatley it hasn't and it appears to be a little worse than it was! The brakes now occasionally make a "mooing noise" at low speeds (curiously, again while steering). It's more noise than you'd expect from just brake dust.

Any help would be very much appreciated, as its driving me mad! Also if anyone could recommend a good mechanic in the Cambridge area, I'd be most grateful!

Thanks in advance

Stephen

When you changed the pads, were the anti-squeal pads in place?

The wheel sound seems like play in bearings.

I don't recall if you have to remove the 306 hubs to change the disks or not. If not then agree sounds like the brake noise caused by no/wrongly fitted anti rattle springs. (did that myself on a BMW 320i: brakes rattled at low speeds. refitted them properly and fine)

Whomever did the work seems incompetent (if you .. sorry)..I'd get them fixed asap.. safety and possible tyre wear...

It was on this occasion an independent mechanic (allegedly pug specialist!) that did the brakes for me. I couldn't say if the anti rattle springs were fitted or not. Is there an easy way for me to check?

hi, sounds like wheel bearings to me, had a friend with a 206 gti in the same shoes(pardon the pun!) his pug dealer refused to admit bearing problems(wycliff in lutterworth, you know who you are) but independant garage made prob go away by replacing all four wheel bearings. if there is any play at all in the bearing the brakes will bind. the "mooing" is bearing noise. hope this helps..

I'll take it along to an independent and see if this solves the puzzle! Thanks All for your help, i'll let you know what happens.

Right, somewhat later than i thought, i've taken the car along to an independant and explained the situation and also put forward your suggestions. He had a good look and found nothing wrong with the bearings and the anti squeal pads appear to be in place. He came to the conclusion that a lot of dirt had built up in the calipers and they hadn't been cleaned/stripped when the pads & discs were changed. He's gonna do that for me and see how it goes!

Any other possibilities?

Cheers
