My wife has inherited a 2016 Opel Mokka, owned from new by her mum, top spec & low mileage. the car is in effect 'free' and the cost of shipping it to the UK is approx £800 plus insurance, which luckily we won't be paying for (the family company will).Quote for changing it from km to Miles is about £150, also we won't be paying for this.

We like the car and drive it as 'our' car whenever we visit South Africa.... Read more

1992 vw combi with a 2.6lt Audi petrol engine which I don’t think ever came out in the uk - this part of the world often had the same cars as you have in the uk only with much bigger engines.

No, it didn't. Biggest petrol engine the UK got in a T25 was the 2.1 5 cyl with, if memory serves, 112bhp. The 2.6 available in South Africa has about 150bhp and, apparently, loads of torque. Of course you will be lucky to get more than 18mpg, so swings and roundabouts!. ...

I tried investigating fxes, including here, but took it to an autoelectrician nearby. He fixed in in sorry time and it wasn't too expensive....

As many of you are now aware, we recently received the tragic news of Avant's (David) sudden passing. Out heartfelt condolences go to his family at this devastating and heartbreaking time.

Avant was a long time moderator of the HonestJohn.co.uk Forum and as many of you have commented, a very kind and fair man. He was indeed a real gentleman and someone who gave up his own time to moderate this forum.... Read more

Yes, compressor oil is not changed as above. When an aircon is regassed, they usually use a fully automatic machine. It removes and weighs any gas left in the system, and separates any oil that is held in suspension in the gas. This will be in the order of only a few ml. It pulls a vacuum to remove all the gas, any water present boils off too. It checks the system for leaks by then stopping and checking the vacuum is still maintained after being stood for around 30 minutes or more. It then refills the system using a set weight of new gas. At the same time new oil is added, equal to amount removed plus a bit usually 5-10ml depending on how much gas had been lost.

If the vacuum test fails, it indicates a leak, the machine stops as its illegal to refill a leaking aircon system. One significant advantage with kwikfit type places is if it they don't charge the customer if the machine fails the vacuum test (ask them beforehand to be sure). No idea but doubt a dealer would do that.

Thanks John, sounds a good suggestion. I did point out the 2008 to my wife, because I too thought it might fit the brief.

Apparently, it's the "wrong" shape. I have tried to understand and gain clarification what that actually means, but so far, that is, and appears to be, a final verdict.

I know a Renegade is a faux Jeep, and I'm well aware of its shortcomings, but it has created a veritable tsunami of enthusiasm and desire from the distaff side.

I appear to be caught between the proverbial rock and hard place.

About the only chink of available light, would be in persuading her to wait until after lockdown so that proper investigations could be entered into. However, as things stand, I fear that would only lead to a postponement of the inevitable.

Am I the only broken man here?

Before discussing the car connection, I'd like you to consider the situation in Swiss luxury watch market. Mechanical watches like Rolex, Omega etc. were coveted items for decades and people paid top money for them.

However, once quartz became mainstream, it was hard to justify buying a luxury watch for time keeping. A £10 Casio quartz watch is as accurate as a £10,000 quartz. So watches were no longer sought after for time keeping but as a show off or collectors' items. The introduction of smart watches have further accelerated the downfall of luxury watch market.

digital.hbs.edu/platform-digit/submission/the-swis...t***ches/

Apple sold more watches than entire Swiss watch industry.

What will happen with the cars? For some car is a utility for others it is a show off. Manufacturers who have developed years of expertise on engine and transmission those are suddenly not that much valuable. Granted some manufacturing principles can be transferred to EV but you don't need engine or gearbox in EVs. Is there anything to differentiate other than "range" in EVs? Now just like smartphones, battery capacity will increase over time anyway. So any EV if you buy today, next year you will get more for your money.

So what will be differentiating factors in EVs? Other threads mentioned that JLR, Aston Martin are suffering.

I think it is lot harder to differentiate in EV compared to ICEs. In EV, consumer perception is Tesla is the best.

Nokia was king of dumb phones but it died in smartphone era.
Kodak died in digital camera era.

How many car companies will disappear in EV era?... Read more

I've posted in the Motoring forum that both forum member ORB and myself were on the cusp of being set up as moderators primarily (but not exclusively) to help out with spam. We only had an email from Avant on Monday evening to confirm a few things before he contacted the IT team to get us set up.

Both ORB and myself have both emailed the editor to confirm we are both still very happy to proceed should that be what the site owners want, if only on a temporary basis until matters are stabilised following the tragic death of Avant....
